A range of activities from shared collections, OAI, digitisation and information arbitrage are considered. To paraphrase Ranganathan the development of electronic media and new forms of co-operation amongst libraries creates an environment where a role offers itself in the provision of the right information in the right format at the right price for the right user at the right time

Librarianship Cooperation in the Field of Rare and Ancient Book, New Opportunities for the Padua University Libraries System

Cooperation has a long tradition in the working attitude of librarians. During the past 100 years words as collaboration, co-operation, resource- sharing have crossed and influenced all the main activities in the libraries. One of the oldest traditions in library cooperation has been the sharing of bibliographic information. Technology became the dominant factor in the design of cooperative systems for the acquisition, control and mobility of materials (OCLC, RLG). In the last years the main incentives to cooperate seem to be the rising material costs, and the proliferation of materials to purchase. A recent re-organization of the Padua University Libraries System (PULS) in 11 “Poli” offered the opportunity to establish an “Ancient and Special Collection Polo” with a coordinator (the researcher) and a small team of librarians managing the ancient and rare collections scattered in 50 libraries. Furthemore during the last 10 years formal relationships have been established with all others libraries of the city, almost all very rich in rare and ancient books. Nowadays they all share the same OPAC and some facilities in the ILL domain. In this context and in field of rare books and special collections, next step will be a mid-term planning of new activities, where cooperation should be one of the cornerstone. The rationale for selecting this particular problem is the researcher’s main working activity as coordinator of the Ancient and special Collection Polo in Padua University Libraries System and her commitment in planning future activities and the development of this particular Polo. To this end the project will provide information to allow the top management to develop a strategical, specific mid-term plan in the general context of the PULS

C'est dans ce contexte que s'inscrit ce volume, avec l'ambition de fournir à tous les professionnels des bibliothèques des clés de compréhension de ces nouveaux enjeux ainsi que des exemples concrets d'actions de coopération soutenus par des apports méthodologiques. Foreign interventions and domestic initiatives in the development of education for librarianship and information management, with Iraq as a case study.

This study aimed to identify the influences on the development and sustainability of education for librarianship and information management. It analysed the factors that contribute to the development of education for librarianship and information management, drawing on theories of change management and the transfer of innovation, and the contextual factors suggested by theories of comparative librarianship. The investigation of these factors focused on a case study of developments in Iraq up to 2003. It examined education for librarianship and information management against the background of the creation of the countrys library and information services, and the broader context of its national, economic, and social development. It also considered trends in international perspectives on library development, and the advice and assistance offered to Iraq. To provide a benchmark for developments in Iraq, it contrasted developments there with brief summaries of parallel developments in other Arab countries and in the cognate field of education for archives and records management in Iraq. It drew evidence from the published literature, previously unexplored archival material, and discussions with some of the participants. From an evaluation of the evidence, the study developed models of the value chain in developing education in the field, illustrating the complex interactions that need to be considered. These represent the generic factors that appear critical to the sustainable development of education for librarianship and information management not only in developing countries but also in countries that are seeking to strengthen the foundations of education in this field. The conclusions also pointed to a number of specific issues that fostered or hindered development in Iraq, including trends in international assistance. The study calls for further work including investigating the impact of traditional and cultural attitudes on the development of education in the field, and understanding of how future generations of LIS professionals in Iraq could develop as change agents
