Classification of summarized videos using hidden markov models on compressed chromaticity signatures
Activity-driven content adaptation for effective video summarisation
In this paper, we present a novel method for content adaptation and video summarization fully implemented in compressed-domain. Firstly, summarization of generic videos is modeled as the process of extracted human objects under various activities/events. Accordingly, frames are classified into five categories via fuzzy decision including shot changes (cut and gradual transitions), motion activities (camera motion and object motion) and others by using two inter-frame measurements. Secondly, human objects are detected using Haar-like features. With the detected human objects and attained frame categories, activity levels for each frame are determined to adapt with video contents. Continuous frames belonging to same category are grouped to form one activity entry as content of interest (COI) which will convert the original video into a series of activities. An overall adjustable quota is used to control the size of generated summarization for efficient streaming purpose. Upon this quota, the frames selected for summarization are determined by evenly sampling the accumulated activity levels for content adaptation. Quantitative evaluations have proved the effectiveness and efficiency of our proposed approach, which provides a more flexible and general solution for this topic as domain-specific tasks such as accurate recognition of objects can be avoided
Hierarchical modelling and adaptive clustering for real-time summarization of rush videos
In this paper, we provide detailed descriptions of a proposed new algorithm for video summarization, which are also included in our submission to TRECVID'08 on BBC rush summarization. Firstly, rush videos are hierarchically modeled using the formal language technique. Secondly, shot detections are applied to introduce a new concept of V-unit for structuring videos in line with the hierarchical model, and thus junk frames within the model are effectively removed. Thirdly, adaptive clustering is employed to group shots into clusters to determine retakes for redundancy removal. Finally, each most representative shot selected from every cluster is ranked according to its length and sum of activity level for summarization. Competitive results have been achieved to prove the effectiveness and efficiency of our techniques, which are fully implemented in the compressed domain. Our work does not require high-level semantics such as object detection and speech/audio analysis which provides a more flexible and general solution for this topic
Identification, indexing, and retrieval of cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) video scenes of simulated medical crisis.
Medical simulations, where uncommon clinical situations can be replicated, have proved to provide a more comprehensive training. Simulations involve the use of patient simulators, which are lifelike mannequins. After each session, the physician must manually review and annotate the recordings and then debrief the trainees. This process can be tedious and retrieval of specific video segments should be automated. In this dissertation, we propose a machine learning based approach to detect and classify scenes that involve rhythmic activities such as Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) from training video sessions simulating medical crises. This applications requires different preprocessing techniques from other video applications. In particular, most processing steps require the integration of multiple features such as motion, color and spatial and temporal constrains. The first step of our approach consists of segmenting the video into shots. This is achieved by extracting color and motion information from each frame and identifying locations where consecutive frames have different features. We propose two different methods to identify shot boundaries. The first one is based on simple thresholding while the second one uses unsupervised learning techniques. The second step of our approach consists of selecting one key frame from each shot and segmenting it into homogeneous regions. Then few regions of interest are identified for further processing. These regions are selected based on the type of motion of their pixels and their likelihood to be skin-like regions. The regions of interest are tracked and a sequence of observations that encode their motion throughout the shot is extracted. The next step of our approach uses an HMM classiffier to discriminate between regions that involve CPR actions and other regions. We experiment with both continuous and discrete HMM. Finally, to improve the accuracy of our system, we also detect faces in each key frame, track them throughout the shot, and fuse their HMM confidence with the region\u27s confidence. To allow the user to view and analyze the video training session much more efficiently, we have also developed a graphical user interface (GUI) for CPR video scene retrieval and analysis with several desirable features. To validate our proposed approach to detect CPR scenes, we use one video simulation session recorded by the SPARC group to train the HMM classifiers and learn the system\u27s parameters. Then, we analyze the proposed system on other video recordings. We show that our approach can identify most CPR scenes with few false alarms

User-centred video abstraction
This thesis was submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy and awarded by Brunel University LondonThe rapid growth of digital video content in recent years has imposed the need for the development of technologies with the capability to produce condensed but semantically rich versions of the input video stream in an effective manner. Consequently, the topic of Video Summarisation is becoming increasingly popular in multimedia community and numerous video abstraction approaches have been proposed accordingly. These recommended techniques can be divided into two major categories of automatic and semi-automatic in accordance with the required level of human intervention in summarisation process. The fully-automated methods mainly adopt the low-level visual, aural and textual features alongside the mathematical and statistical algorithms in furtherance to extract the most significant segments of original video. However, the effectiveness of this type of techniques is restricted by a number of factors such as domain-dependency, computational expenses and the inability to understand the semantics of videos from low-level features. The second category of techniques however, attempts to alleviate the quality of summaries by involving humans in the abstraction process to bridge the semantic gap. Nonetheless, a single userâs subjectivity and other external contributing factors such as distraction will potentially deteriorate the performance of this group of approaches. Accordingly, in this thesis we have focused on the development of three user-centred effective video summarisation techniques that could be applied to different video categories and generate satisfactory results. According to our first proposed approach, a novel mechanism for a user-centred video summarisation has been presented for the scenarios in which multiple actors are employed in the video summarisation process in order to minimise the negative effects of sole user adoption. Based on our recommended algorithm, the video frames were initially scored by a group of video annotators âon the flyâ. This was followed by averaging these assigned scores in order to generate a singular saliency score for each video frame and, finally, the highest scored video frames alongside the corresponding audio and textual contents were extracted to be included into the final summary. The effectiveness of our approach has been assessed by comparing the video summaries generated based on our approach against the results obtained from three existing automatic summarisation tools that adopt different modalities for abstraction purposes. The experimental results indicated that our proposed method is capable of delivering remarkable outcomes in terms of Overall Satisfaction and Precision with an acceptable Recall rate, indicating the usefulness of involving user input in the video summarisation process. In an attempt to provide a better user experience, we have proposed our personalised video summarisation method with an ability to customise the generated summaries in accordance with the viewersâ preferences. Accordingly, the end-userâs priority levels towards different video scenes were captured and utilised for updating the average scores previously assigned by the video annotators. Finally, our earlier proposed summarisation method was adopted to extract the most significant audio-visual content of the video. Experimental results indicated the capability of this approach to deliver superior outcomes compared with our previously proposed method and the three other automatic summarisation tools. Finally, we have attempted to reduce the required level of audience involvement for personalisation purposes by proposing a new method for producing personalised video summaries. Accordingly, SIFT visual features were adopted to identify the video scenesâ semantic categories. Fusing this retrieved data with pre-built usersâ profiles, personalised video abstracts can be created. Experimental results showed the effectiveness of this method in delivering superior outcomes comparing to our previously recommended algorithm and the three other automatic summarisation techniques
AUTOMATED FEATURE EXTRACTION AND CONTENT-BASED RETRIEVAL OFPATHOLOGY MICROSCOPIC IMAGES USING K-MEANS CLUSTERING AND CODE RUN-LENGTH PROBABILITY DISTRIBUTION
The dissertation starts with an extensive literature survey on the current issues in content-based image retrieval (CBIR) research, the state-of-the-art theories, methodologies, and implementations, covering topics such as general information retrieval theories, imaging, image feature identification and extraction, feature indexing and multimedia database search, user-system interaction, relevance feedback, and performance evaluation. A general CBIR framework has been proposed with three layers: image document space, feature space, and concept space. The framework emphasizes that while the projection from the image document space to the feature space is algorithmic and unrestricted, the connection between the feature space and the concept space is based on statistics instead of semantics. The scheme favors image features that do not rely on excessive assumptions about image contentAs an attempt to design a new CBIR methodology following the above framework, k-means clustering color quantization is applied to pathology microscopic images, followed by code run-length probability distribution feature extraction. Kulback-Liebler divergence is used as distance measure for feature comparison. For content-based retrieval, the distance between two images is defined as a function of all individual features. The process is highly automated and the system is capable of working effectively across different tissues without human interference. Possible improvements and future directions have been discussed
Video Categorization Using Semantics and Semiotics
There is a great need to automatically segment, categorize, and annotate video data, and to develop efficient tools for browsing and searching. We believe that the categorization of videos can be achieved by exploring the concepts and meanings of the videos. This task requires bridging the gap between low-level content and high-level concepts (or semantics). Once a relationship is established between the low-level computable features of the video and its semantics, the user would be able to navigate through videos through the use of concepts and ideas (for example, a user could extract only those scenes in an action film that actually contain fights) rat her than sequentially browsing the whole video. However, this relationship must follow the norms of human perception and abide by the rules that are most often followed by the creators (directors) of these videos. These rules are called film grammar in video production literature. Like any natural language, this grammar has several dialects, but it has been acknowledged to be universal. Therefore, the knowledge of film grammar can be exploited effectively for the understanding of films. To interpret an idea using the grammar, we need to first understand the symbols, as in natural languages, and second, understand the rules of combination of these symbols to represent concepts. In order to develop algorithms that exploit this film grammar, it is necessary to relate the symbols of the grammar to computable video features.
In this dissertation, we have identified a set of computable features of videos and have developed methods to estimate them. A computable feature of audio-visual data is defined as any statistic of available data that can be automatically extracted using image/signal processing and computer vision techniques. These features are global in nature and are extracted using whole images, therefore, they do not require any object detection, tracking and classification. These features include video shots, shot length, shot motion content, color distribution, key-lighting, and audio energy. We use these features and exploit the knowledge of ubiquitous film grammar to solve three related problems: segmentation and categorization of talk and game shows; classification of movie genres based on the previews; and segmentation and representation of full-length Hollywood movies and sitcoms.
We have developed a method for organizing videos of talk and game shows by automatically separating the program segments from the commercials and then classifying each shot as the host\u27s or guest\u27s shot. In our approach, we rely primarily on information contained in shot transitions and utilize the inherent difference in the scene structure (grammar) of commercials and talk shows. A data structure called a shot connectivity graph is constructed, which links shots over time using temporal proximity and color similarity constraints. Analysis of the shot connectivity graph helps us to separate commercials from program segments. This is done by first detecting stories, and then assigning a weight to each story based on its likelihood of being a commercial or a program segment. We further analyze stories to distinguish shots of the hosts from those of the guests. We have performed extensive experiments on eight full-length talk shows (e.g. Larry King Live, Meet the Press, News Night) and game shows (Who Wants To Be A Millionaire), and have obtained excellent classification with 96% recall and 99% precision. http://www.cs.ucf.edu/~vision/projects/LarryKing/LarryKing.html
Secondly, we have developed a novel method for genre classification of films using film previews. In our approach, we classify previews into four broad categories: comedies, action, dramas or horror films. Computable video features are combined in a framework with cinematic principles to provide a mapping to these four high-level semantic classes. We have developed two methods for genre classification; (a) a hierarchical method and (b) an unsupervised classification met hod. In the hierarchical method, we first classify movies into action and non-action categories based on the average shot length and motion content in the previews. Next, non-action movies are sub-classified into comedy, horror or drama categories by examining their lighting key. Finally, action movies are ranked on the basis of number of explosions/gunfire events. In the unsupervised method for classifying movies, a mean shift classifier is used to discover the structure of the mapping between the computable features and each film genre. We have conducted extensive experiments on over a hundred film previews and demonstrated that low-level features can be efficiently utilized for movie classification. Finally, we have addressed the problem of detecting scene boundaries in full-length feature movies. We have developed two novel approaches to automatically find scenes in the videos. Our first approach is a two-pass algorithm. In the first pass, shots are clustered by computing backward shot coherence; a shot color similarity measure that detects potential scene boundaries (PSBs) in the videos. In the second pass we compute scene dynamics for each scene as a function of shot length and the motion content in the potential scenes. In this pass, a scene-merging criterion is used to remove weak PSBs in order to reduce over-segmentation. In our second approach, we cluster shots into scenes by transforming this task into a graph-partitioning problem. This is achieved by constructing a weighted undirected graph called a shot similarity graph (SSG), where each node represents a shot and the edges between the shots are weighted by their similarities (color and motion). The SSG is then split into sub-graphs by applying the normalized cut technique for graph partitioning. The partitions obtained represent individual scenes in the video. We further extend the framework to automatically detect the best representative key frames of identified scenes. With this approach, we are able to obtain a compact representation of huge videos in a small number of key frames. We have performed experiments on five Hollywood films (Terminator II, Top Gun, Gone In 60 Seconds, Golden Eye, and A Beautiful Mind) and one TV sitcom (Seinfeld) that demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach. Der Ăbergang von analogen zu digitalen Videos hat in den letzten Jahren zu groĂen VerĂ€nderungen innerhalb der Filmarchive gefĂŒhrt. Insbesondere durch die Digitalisierung der Filme ergeben sich neue Möglichkeiten fĂŒr die Archive. Eine Abnutzung oder Alterung der Filmrollen ist ausgeschlossen, so dass die QualitĂ€t unverĂ€ndert erhalten bleibt. Zudem wird ein netzbasierter und somit deutlich einfacherer Zugriff auf die Videos in den Archiven möglich. ZusĂ€tzliche Dienste stehen den Archivaren und Anwendern zur VerfĂŒgung, die erweiterte Suchmöglichkeiten bereitstellen und die Navigation bei der Wiedergabe erleichtern. Die Suche innerhalb der Videoarchive erfolgt mit Hilfe von Metadaten, die weitere Informationen ĂŒber die Videos zur VerfĂŒgung stellen. Ein groĂer Teil der Metadaten wird manuell von Archivaren eingegeben, was mit einem groĂen Zeitaufwand und hohen Kosten verbunden ist. Durch die computergestĂŒtzte Analyse eines digitalen Videos ist es möglich, den Aufwand bei der Erzeugung von Metadaten fĂŒr Videoarchive zu reduzieren. Im ersten Teil dieser Dissertation werden neue Verfahren vorgestellt, um wichtige semantische Inhalte der Videos zu erkennen. Insbesondere werden neu entwickelte Algorithmen zur Erkennung von Schnitten, der Analyse der Kamerabewegung, der Segmentierung und Klassifikation von Objekten, der Texterkennung und der Gesichtserkennung vorgestellt. Die automatisch ermittelten semantischen Informationen sind sehr wertvoll, da sie die Arbeit mit digitalen Videoarchiven erleichtern. Die Informationen unterstĂŒtzen nicht nur die Suche in den Archiven, sondern fĂŒhren auch zur Entwicklung neuer Anwendungen, die im zweiten Teil der Dissertation vorgestellt werden. Beispielsweise können computergenerierte Zusammenfassungen von Videos erzeugt oder Videos automatisch an die Eigenschaften eines AbspielgerĂ€tes angepasst werden. Ein weiterer Schwerpunkt dieser Dissertation liegt in der Analyse historischer Filme. Vier europĂ€ische Filmarchive haben eine groĂe Anzahl historischer Videodokumentationen zur VerfĂŒgung gestellt, welche Anfang bis Mitte des letzten Jahrhunderts gedreht und in den letzten Jahren digitalisiert wurden. Durch die Lagerung und Abnutzung der Filmrollen ĂŒber mehrere Jahrzehnte sind viele Videos stark verrauscht und enthalten deutlich sichtbare Bildfehler. Die BildqualitĂ€t der historischen Schwarz-WeiĂ-Filme unterscheidet sich signifikant von der QualitĂ€t aktueller Videos, so dass eine verlĂ€ssliche Analyse mit bestehenden Verfahren hĂ€ufig nicht möglich ist. Im Rahmen dieser Dissertation werden neue Algorithmen vorgestellt, um eine zuverlĂ€ssige Erkennung von semantischen Inhalten auch in historischen Videos zu ermöglichen
