Domestic dog ownership in Iran is a risk factor for human infection with Leishmania infantum.

One explanation proposed for the widespread failure to control zoonotic visceral leishmaniasis by culling infected domestic dogs is that wild canids or humans play significant roles in transmission. The aim of this study was to determine the importance of domestic dogs as the reservoir hosts of visceral leishmaniasis in northwest Iran. A random sample of 3,872 children and 199 dogs in 38 villages was surveyed by the direct agglutination test. Dog ownership details among these households were collected by questionnaire. Parasites isolated from 16 patients and 12 dogs were characterized as Leishmania infantum MON-1. Average seroprevalence in dogs (21.6%) was much higher than in children (7%). Child seropositivity increased significantly with village dog density in absolute terms (P < 0.001) and in relation to dog/human ratios (P = 0.028). Dog ownership within villages also was a significant risk factor for child seropositivity (P = 0.003)

Dance with me! : child-robot interaction in the wild

This paper presents the results of a singular experiment that has been conducted in a kindergarten in Japan. Four groups of ten children aged 3- to 5-year old interacted freely with the robot Pepper for about 20 min. In the first part of the experiment, the robot introduced itself to the children explaining a few basics. The children were then invited to touch the robot, to dance with it and finally to play with it freely while it was idle. Our experiment shows that regardless of the children’s age, they engage easily with the robot while it was talking and moving, however children of different ages have a different perception of the robot when it is idle. Younger children consider it more as a toy while older children are more likely to attribute a meaning to its idleness

The Wild Child: Children are Freaks in Antebellum Novels

This dissertation investigates the spectacle of antebellum freak shows and focuses on how Phineas Taylor Barnum\u27s influence permeates five antebellum novels. The study concerns itself with wild children staged as freaks in Margaret by Sylvester Judd, City Crimes by George Thompson, The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne, Uncle Tom\u27s Cabin by Harriet Beecher Stowe and Our Nig by Harriet Wilson. Barnum\u27s influence was pervasive. The novels I investigate span a period of fourteen years before the Civil War, and offer a view of the kid show presented by the freaks in each text. Touching into spectacle, authors construct narratives and stage freaks in order to solidify boundaries that define insiders and outsiders. These works offer entertaining and didactic freaks to be gawked at and probed. As is usual with freak shows, the viewers/readers provide as much information about society and spectatorship in nineteenth century America, as do the freaks themselves

Picking Battles, Finding Joy: Creating Community in the Uncontrolled Classroom

Every educator has a handful of students who perpetually push his or her buttons. The challenge of creating a strong, nurturing classroom community is especially difficult if you are an urban school teacher. Not because children in an urban area are inherently more wild or difficult to teach. Rather, there is a mythology about how to best control urban children that infects many city schools. This article discusses ways to control classrooms in urban schools and contains the following sections: (1) The Carrot and the Stick--Behaviorism in the Urban Classroom; (2) The Uncontrolled Urban Class; (3) Classroom Mantras; (4) I Will Treat My Students the Way I Would Want My Own Child Treated; (5) Be Critical of What You Are Teaching/ Kick the Curriculum Up a Notch; (6) Pick Your Battles; (7) Create Another Identity for the Child; (8) Assumptions about Race; (9) Finding Joy at School; (10) Every Day Is Another Chance; (11) Don\u27t Ask Kids To Do What We Don\u27t Ask Adults To Do; and (12) Something Bigger

In vitro comparison of four treatments which discourage infestation by head lice

Products which discourage the transmission of head lice are appealing; however, few studies have tested this concept. This study aims to test the efficacy of four commercial products which claim to discourage infestation by head lice; MOOV Head Lice Defence Spray (MOOV), Wild Child Quit Nits Head Lice Defence Spray (Wild Child), 100% Natural Head Lice Beater (Lice Beater) or Lysout Natural Anti-Lice Spray (Lysout). An in vitro challenge test was used. Briefly, one half of a filter paper lining the base of a petri dish was treated with the test product. Lice were then introduced to the centre of the dish, which was covered and placed in the dark at 20°C for 30 min. The number of lice on the treated and untreated sides of the filter paper was then counted after 2, 4 and 8 h post-application. MOOV was significantly more effective at discouraging the transmission of lice than the water control (p < 0.01), while Wild Child and Lysout were not at all time points. Lice Beater was significantly worse than the water control after 2 h (p < 0.01), while there was no difference after 4 and 8 h. MOOV was found to perform significantly better than Wild Child (p < 0.05) and Lice Beater (p < 0.05) at all time points. It also performed significantly better than Lysout at 2 (p < 0.05) and 8 h (p < 0.05), but not 4 h. MOOV offers the best efficacy and consistency of performance of the four products tested to discourage the transmission of head lice

KinshipGAN: Synthesizing of Kinship Faces From Family Photos by Regularizing a Deep Face Network

In this paper, we propose a kinship generator network that can synthesize a possible child face by analyzing his/her parent's photo. For this purpose, we focus on to handle the scarcity of kinship datasets throughout the paper by proposing novel solutions in particular. To extract robust features, we integrate a pre-trained face model to the kinship face generator. Moreover, the generator network is regularized with an additional face dataset and adversarial loss to decrease the overfitting of the limited samples. Lastly, we adapt cycle-domain transformation to attain a more stable results. Experiments are conducted on Families in the Wild (FIW) dataset. The experimental results show that the contributions presented in the paper provide important performance improvements compared to the baseline architecture and our proposed method yields promising perceptual results.Comment: Accepted to IEEE ICIP 201

Some Wild Plant and Animal Life That Has Been Presented in Thirty First Grade Readers During the Last Fifteen Years

    Get PDF
Since the interests of children often center around wild plants and animals, the writer has attempted to picture the needs for realistic and scientific material for first grade children. The use of the child\u27s interests and needs as guides for teacher\u27s planning necessitates a comprehensive knowledge of available material, that is why the study of wild plant and animal life that has been presented in thirty first grade readers is of great importance. Even in the first grade the child\u27s desire to find out should be encouraged in his reading rather than his dependence upon being told. What materials on wild plant and animal life can a teacher expect to have? Because wild plant and animal life is living, and because it is in some form, within the living experience of practically every child (two vital characteristics of material for children) this study has been made in an attempt to answer the preceding question. The purpose of this study is twofold. First, it is to determine the wild plant and animal life material found in thirty first grade readers, and a comparison of this material with wild plant and animal life existing in Texas. Although the wild life of Texas has been used as a basis of comparison in this phase of the study it may be applied generally to the Southwest. Because of the range in geographical and climatic conditions in Texas we find here many birds, other animals, flowers, and trees of neighboring states. For example: the Arizona State Bird is a native of Texas; the Oklahoma State Flower is wild in Texas; the Louisiana Pines grow in abundance in East Texas. Second, this study is to determine the trends in the use of information on wild plant and animal life in thirty first grade readers from 1922 to 1937. This phase of study should be of considerable value to first grade teachers of the nation. It portrays the amount and type of material existing about certain animals and plants in groups of five year periods. Are your readers among those books in which most space was given to fantastic, realistic, or scientific discussions? Does this study emphasize for you the need of a certain type of reading material? What should be done about it? If the thirty different readers in this unusually well equipped first grade room lack the needed material for these children, could it be expected that first grade children in an average school room situation are getting what they need
