Characterizing the Influence of Motion Parameters on Performance when Acquiring Moving Targets
International audienceCurrent pointing techniques provide no adequate way to select very small objects whose movements are fast and unpredictable, and theoretical tools –such as Fitts' law– do not model unpredictable motion. To inform the design of appropriate selection techniques, we studied how users performed when selecting moving objects in a 2D environment. We propose to characterize selection performance as a function of the predictability of the moving targets, based on three parameters: the speed (S) of the target, the frequency (F) at which the target changes direction, and the amplitude (A) of those direction changes. Our results show that for a given speed, selection is relatively easy when A and F are both low or high, and difficult otherwise

Real-time spatial modeling to detect and track resources on construction sites
For more than 10 years the U.S. construction industry has experienced over 1,000
fatalities annually. Many fatalities may have been prevented had the individuals and
equipment involved been more aware of and alert to the physical state of the environment
around them. Awareness may be improved by automatic 3D (three-dimensional) sensing
and modeling of the job site environment in real-time. Existing 3D modeling approaches
based on range scanning techniques are capable of modeling static objects only, and thus
cannot model in real-time dynamic objects in an environment comprised of moving
humans, equipment, and materials. Emerging prototype 3D video range cameras offer
another alternative by facilitating affordable, wide field of view, automated static and
dynamic object detection and tracking at frame rates better than 1Hz (real-time).
This dissertation presents an imperical work and methodology to rapidly create a
spatial model of construction sites and in particular to detect, model, and track the position, dimension, direction, and velocity of static and moving project resources in real-time, based on range data obtained from a three-dimensional video range camera in a
static or moving position. Existing construction site 3D modeling approaches based on
optical range sensing technologies (laser scanners, rangefinders, etc.) and 3D modeling
approaches (dense, sparse, etc.) that offered potential solutions for this research are
reviewed. The choice of an emerging sensing tool and preliminary experiments with this
prototype sensing technology are discussed. These findings led to the development of a
range data processing algorithm based on three-dimensional occupancy grids which is
demonstrated in detail. Testing and validation of the proposed algorithms have been
conducted to quantify the performance of sensor and algorithm through extensive
experimentation involving static and moving objects. Experiments in indoor laboratory
and outdoor construction environments have been conducted with construction resources
such as humans, equipment, materials, or structures to verify the accuracy of the
occupancy grid modeling approach. Results show that modeling objects and measuring
their position, dimension, direction, and speed had an accuracy level compatible to the
requirements of active safety features for construction. Results demonstrate that video
rate 3D data acquisition and analysis of construction environments can support effective
detection, tracking, and convex hull modeling of objects. Exploiting rapidly generated
three-dimensional models for improved visualization, communications, and process
control has inherent value, broad application, and potential impact, e.g. as-built vs. as-planned comparison, condition assessment, maintenance, operations, and construction
activities control. In combination with effective management practices, this sensing
approach has the potential to assist equipment operators to avoid incidents that result in
reduce human injury, death, or collateral damage on construction sites.Civil, Architectural, and Environmental Engineerin
Flight of the dragonflies and damselflies
This work is a synthesis of our current understanding of the mechanics, aerodynamics and visually mediated control of dragonfly and damselfly flight, with the addition of new experimental and computational data in several key areas. These are: the diversity of dragonfly wing morphologies, the aerodynamics of gliding flight, force generation in flapping flight, aerodynamic efficiency, comparative flight performance and pursuit strategies during predatory and territorial flights. New data are set in context by brief reviews covering anatomy at several scales, insect aerodynamics, neuromechanics and behaviour. We achieve a new perspective by means of a diverse range of techniques, including laser-line mapping of wing topographies, computational fluid dynamics simulations of finely detailed wing geometries, quantitative imaging using particle image velocimetry of on-wing and wake flow patterns, classical aerodynamic theory, photography in the field, infrared motion capture and multi-camera optical tracking of free flight trajectories in laboratory environments. Our comprehensive approach enables a novel synthesis of datasets and subfields that integrates many aspects of flight from the neurobiology of the compound eye, through the aeromechanical interface with the surrounding fluid, to flight performance under cruising and higher-energy behavioural modes
Electromagnetic Tracking for Medical Imaging
This thesis explores the novel use of a wireless electromagnetic: EM) tracking device in a Computed Tomography: CT) environment. The sources of electromagnetic interference inside a Philips Brilliant Big Bore CT scanner are analyzed. A research version of the Calypso wireless tracking system was set up inside the CT suite, and a set of three Beacon transponders was bonded to a plastic fixture. The tracking system was tested under different working parameters including orientation of tracking beacons, the gain level of the frontend amplifier, the distance between the transponders and the sensor array, the rotation speed of the CT gantry, and the presence/absence of the CT X-ray source. The performance of the tracking system reveals two obvious factors which bring in electromagnetic interference: 1) metal like effect brought in by carbon fiber patient couch and 2) electromagnetic disturbance due to spinning metal inside the CT gantry. The accuracy requirements for electromagnetic tracking in the CT environment are a Root Mean Square: RMS) error of \u3c2 mm in stationary position tracking. Within a working volume of 120×120×120 mm3 centered 200 mm below the sensor array, the tracking system achieves the desired clinical goal
Harnessing Spatial Intensity Fluctuations for Optical Imaging and Sensing
Properties of light such as amplitude and phase, temporal and spatial coherence, polarization, etc. are abundantly used for sensing and imaging. Regardless of the passive or active nature of the sensing method, optical intensity fluctuations are always present! While these fluctuations are usually regarded as noise, there are situations where one can harness the intensity fluctuations to enhance certain attributes of the sensing procedure. In this thesis, we developed different sensing methodologies that use statistical properties of optical fluctuations for gauging specific information. We examine this concept in the context of three different aspects of computational optical imaging and sensing. First, we study imposing specific statistical properties to the probing field to image or characterize certain properties of an object through a statistical analysis of the spatially integrated scattered intensity. This offers unique capabilities for imaging and sensing techniques operating in highly perturbed environments and low-light conditions. Next, we examine optical sensing in the presence of strong perturbations that preclude any controllable field modification. We demonstrate that inherent properties of diffused coherent fields and fluctuations of integrated intensity can be used to track objects hidden behind obscurants. Finally, we address situations where, due to coherent noise, image accuracy is severely degraded by intensity fluctuations. By taking advantage of the spatial coherence properties of optical fields, we show that this limitation can be effectively mitigated and that a significant improvement in the signal-to-noise ratio can be achieved even in one single-shot measurement. The findings included in this dissertation illustrate different circumstances where optical fluctuations can affect the efficacy of computational optical imaging and sensing. A broad range of applications, including biomedical imaging and remote sensing, could benefit from the new approaches to suppress, enhance, and exploit optical fluctuations, which are described in this dissertation
Influence of Sensorimotor Noise on the Planning and Control of Reaching in 3-Dimensional Space
abstract: The ability to plan, execute, and control goal oriented reaching and grasping movements is among the most essential functions of the brain. Yet, these movements are inherently variable; a result of the noise pervading the neural signals underlying sensorimotor processing. The specific influences and interactions of these noise processes remain unclear. Thus several studies have been performed to elucidate the role and influence of sensorimotor noise on movement variability. The first study focuses on sensory integration and movement planning across the reaching workspace. An experiment was designed to examine the relative contributions of vision and proprioception to movement planning by measuring the rotation of the initial movement direction induced by a perturbation of the visual feedback prior to movement onset. The results suggest that contribution of vision was relatively consistent across the evaluated workspace depths; however, the influence of vision differed between the vertical and later axes indicate that additional factors beyond vision and proprioception influence movement planning of 3-dimensional movements. If the first study investigated the role of noise in sensorimotor integration, the second and third studies investigate relative influence of sensorimotor noise on reaching performance. Specifically, they evaluate how the characteristics of neural processing that underlie movement planning and execution manifest in movement variability during natural reaching. Subjects performed reaching movements with and without visual feedback throughout the movement and the patterns of endpoint variability were compared across movement directions. The results of these studies suggest a primary role of visual feedback noise in shaping patterns of variability and in determining the relative influence of planning and execution related noise sources. The final work considers a computational approach to characterizing how sensorimotor processes interact to shape movement variability. A model of multi-modal feedback control was developed to simulate the interaction of planning and execution noise on reaching variability. The model predictions suggest that anisotropic properties of feedback noise significantly affect the relative influence of planning and execution noise on patterns of reaching variability.Dissertation/ThesisPh.D. Bioengineering 201
Analyzing high resolution topography for advancing the understanding of mass and energy transfer through landscapes: A review
International audienceThe study of mass and energy transfer across landscapes has recently evolved to comprehensive considerations acknowledging the role of biota and humans as geomorphic agents, as well as the importance of small-scale landscape features. A contributing and supporting factor to this evolution is the emergence over the last two decades of technologies able to acquire high resolution topography (HRT) (meter and sub-meter resolution) data. Landscape features can now be captured at an appropriately fine spatial resolution at which surface processes operate; this has revolutionized the way we study Earth-surface processes. The wealth of information contained in HRT also presents considerable challenges. For example, selection of the most appropriate type of HRT data for a given application is not trivial. No definitive approach exists for identifying and filtering erroneous or unwanted data, yet inappropriate filtering can create artifacts or eliminate/distort critical features. Estimates of errors and uncertainty are often poorly defined and typically fail to represent the spatial heterogeneity of the dataset, which may introduce bias or error for many analyses. For ease of use, gridded products are typically preferred rather than the more information-rich point cloud representations. Thus many users take advantage of only a fraction of the available data, which has furthermore been subjected to a series of operations often not known or investigated by the user. Lastly, standard HRT analysis work-flows are yet to be established for many popular HRT operations, which has contributed to the limited use of point cloud data.In this review, we identify key research questions relevant to the Earth-surface processes community within the theme of mass and energy transfer across landscapes and offer guidance on how to identify the most appropriate topographic data type for the analysis of interest. We describe the operations commonly performed from raw data to raster products and we identify key considerations and suggest appropriate work-flows for each, pointing to useful resources and available tools. Future research directions should stimulate further development of tools that take advantage of the wealth of information contained in the HRT data and address the present and upcoming research needs such as the ability to filter out unwanted data, compute spatially variable estimates of uncertainty and perform multi-scale analyses. While we focus primarily on HRT applications for mass and energy transfer, we envision this review to be relevant beyond the Earth-surface processes community for a much broader range of applications involving the analysis of HRT
