    A Remote Capacity Utilization Estimator for WLANs

    In WLANs, the capacity of a node is not fixed and can vary dramatically due to the shared nature of the medium under the IEEE 802.11 MAC mechanism. There are two main methods of capacity estimation in WLANs: Active methods based upon probing packets that consume the bandwidth of the channel and do not scale well. Passive methods based upon analyzing the transmitted packets that avoid the overhead of transmitting probe packets and perform with greater accuracy. Furthermore, passive methods can be implemented locally or remotely. Local passive methods require an additional dissemination mechanism in order to communicate the capacity information to other network nodes which adds complexity and can be unreliable under adverse network conditions. On the other hand, remote passive methods do not require a dissemination mechanism and so can be simpler to implement and also do not suffer from communication reliability issues. Many applications (e.g. ANDSF etc) can benefit from utilizing this capacity information. Therefore, in this thesis we propose a new remote passive Capacity Utilization estimator performed by neighbour nodes. However, there will be an error associated with the measurements owing to the differences in the wireless medium as observed by the different nodes’ location. The main undertaking of this thesis is to address this issue. An error model is developed to analyse the main sources of error and to determine their impact on the accuracy of the estimator. Arising from this model, a number of modifications are implemented to improve the accuracy of the estimator. The network simulator ns2 is used to investigate the performance of the estimator and the results from a range of different test scenarios indicate its feasibility and accuracy as a passive remote method. Finally, the estimator is deployed in a node saturation detection scheme where it is shown to outperform two other similar schemes based upon queue observation and probing with ping packets

    Fault Diagnosis Algorithms for Wireless Sensor Networks

    The sensor nodes in wireless sensor networks (WSNs) are deployed in unattended and hostile environments. The ill-disposed environment affects the monitoring infrastructure that includes the sensor nodes and the links. In addition, node failures and environmental hazards cause frequent topology change, communication failure, and network partition. This in turn adds a new dimension to the fragility of the WSN topology. Such perturbations are far more common in WSNs than those found in conventional wireless networks. These perturbations demand efficient techniques for discovering disruptive behavior in WSNs. Traditional fault diagnosis techniques devised for wired interconnected networks, and conventional wireless networks are not directly applicable to WSNs due to its specific requirements and limitations. System-level diagnosis is a technique to identify faults in distributed networks such as multiprocessor systems, wired interconnected networks, and conventional wireless networks. Recently, this has been applied on ad hoc networks and WSNs. This is performed by deduction, based on information in the form of results of tests applied to the sensor nodes. Neighbor coordination-based system-level diagnosis is a variation of this method, which exploits the spatio-temporal correlation between sensor measurements. In this thesis, we present a new approach to diagnose faulty sensor nodes in a WSN, which works in conjunction with the underlying clustering protocol and exploits spatio-temporal correlation between sensor measurements. An advantage of this method is that the diagnostic operation constitutes real work performed by the system, rather than a specialized diagnostic task. In this way, the normal operation of the network can be used for the diagnosis and resulting less time and message overhead. In this thesis, we have devised and evaluated fault diagnosis algorithms for WSNs considering persistence of the faults (transient, intermittent, and permanent), faults in communication channels and in one of the approaches, we attempt to solve the issue of node mobility in diagnosis. A cluster based distributed fault diagnosis (CDFD) algorithm is proposed where the diagnostic local view is obtained by exploiting the spatially correlated sensor measurements. We derived an optimal threshold for effective fault diagnosis in sparse networks. The message complexity of CDFD is O(n) and the number of bits exchanged to diagnose the network are O(n log2 n). The intermittent fault diagnosis is formulated as a multiobjective optimization problem based on the inter-test interval and number of test repetitions required to diagnose the intermittent faults. The two objectives such as detection latency and energy overhead are taken into consideration with a constraint of detection errors. A high level (> 95%) of detection accuracy is achieved while keeping the false alarm rate low (< 1%) for sparse networks. The proposed cluster based distributed intermittent fault diagnosis (CDIFD) algorithm is energy efficient because in CDIFD, diagnostic messages are sent as the output of the routine tasks of the WSNs. A count and threshold-based mechanism is used to discriminate the persistence of faults. The main characteristics of these faults are the amounts of time the fault disappears. We adopt this state-holding time to discriminate transient from intermittent or permanent faults. The proposed cluster based distributed fault diagnosis and discrimination (CDFDD) algorithm is energy efficient due to the improved network lifetime which is greater than 1150 data-gathering rounds with transient fault rates as high as 20%. A mobility aware hierarchal architecture is proposed which is to detect hard and soft faults in dynamic WSN topology assuming random movements of nodes in the WSN. A test pattern that ensures error checking of each functional block of a sensor node is employed to diagnose the network. The proposed mobility aware cluster based distributed fault diagnosis (MCDFD) algorithm assures a better packet delivery ratio (> 80%) in highly dynamic networks with a fault rate as high as 30%. The network lifetime is more than 900 data-gathering rounds in a highly dynamic network with a fault rate as high as 20%

    Resource-efficient strategies for mobile ad-hoc networking

    The ubiquity and widespread availability of wireless mobile devices with ever increasing inter-connectivity (e. g. by means of Bluetooth, WiFi or UWB) have led to new and emerging next generation mobile communication paradigms, such as the Mobile Ad-hoc NETworks (MANETs). MANETs are differentiated from traditional mobile systems by their unique properties, e. g. unpredictable nodal location, unstable topology and multi-hop packet relay. The success of on-going research in communications involving MANETs has encouraged their applications in areas with stringent performance requirements such as the e-healthcare, e. g. to connect them with existing systems to deliver e-healthcare services anytime anywhere. However, given that the capacity of mobile devices is restricted by their resource constraints (e. g. computing power, energy supply and bandwidth), a fundamental challenge in MANETs is how to realize the crucial performance/Quality of Service (QoS) expectations of communications in a network of high dynamism without overusing the limited resources. A variety of networking technologies (e. g. routing, mobility estimation and connectivity prediction) have been developed to overcome the topological instability and unpredictability and to enable communications in MANETs with satisfactory performance or QoS. However, these technologies often feature a high consumption of power and/or bandwidth, which makes them unsuitable for resource constrained handheld or embedded mobile devices. In particular, existing strategies of routing and mobility characterization are shown to achieve fairly good performance but at the expense of excessive traffic overhead or energy consumption. For instance, existing hybrid routing protocols in dense MANETs are based in two-dimensional organizations that produce heavy proactive traffic. In sparse MANETs, existing packet delivery strategy often replicates too many copies of a packet for a QoS target. In addition, existing tools for measuring nodal mobility are based on either the GPS or GPS-free positioning systems, which incur intensive communications/computations that are costly for battery-powered terminals. There is a need to develop economical networking strategies (in terms of resource utilization) in delivering the desired performance/soft QoS targets. The main goal of this project is to develop new networking strategies (in particular, for routing and mobility characterization) that are efficient in terms of resource consumptions while being effective in realizing performance expectations for communication services (e. g. in the scenario of e-healthcare emergency) with critical QoS requirements in resource-constrained MANETs. The main contributions of the thesis are threefold: (1) In order to tackle the inefficient bandwidth utilization of hybrid service/routing discovery in dense MANETs, a novel "track-based" scheme is developed. The scheme deploys a one-dimensional track-like structure for hybrid routing and service discovery. In comparison with existing hybrid routing/service discovery protocols that are based on two-dimensional structures, the track-based scheme is more efficient in terms of traffic overhead (e. g. about 60% less in low mobility scenarios as shown in Fig. 3.4). Due to the way "provocative tracks" are established, the scheme has also the capability to adapt to the network traffic and mobility for a better performance. (2) To minimize the resource utilization of packet delivery in sparse MANETs where wireless links are intermittently connected, a store-and-forward based scheme, "adaptive multicopy routing", was developed for packet delivery in sparse mobile ad-hoc networks. Instead of relying on the source to control the delivery overhead as in the conventional multi-copy protocols, the scheme allows each intermediate node to independently decide whether to forward a packet according to the soft QoS target and local network conditions. Therefore, the scheme can adapt to varying networking situations that cannot be anticipated in conventional source-defined strategies and deliver packets for a specific QoS targets using minimum traffic overhead. ii (3) The important issue of mobility measurement that imposes heavy communication/computation burdens on a mobile is addressed with a set of resource-efficient "GPS-free" soluti ons, which provide mobility characterization with minimal resource utilization for ranging and signalling by making use of the information of the time-varying ranges between neighbouring mobile nodes (or groups of mobile nodes). The range-based solutions for mobility characterization consist of a new mobility metric for network-wide performance measurement, two velocity estimators for approximating the inter-node relative speeds, and a new scheme for characterizing the nodal mobility. The new metric and its variants are capable of capturing the mobility of a network as well as predicting the performance. The velocity estimators are used to measure the speed and orientation of a mobile relative to its neighbours, given the presence of a departing node.     Enhanced reliable and energy efficient pressure based data forwarding schemes for underwater wireless sensor networks

    Data collection in Underwater Wireless Sensor Networks (UWSN) requires highly optimized communication approach in order to achieve efficient data packet delivery. This approach consists of different communication layers of which routing protocol is an important consideration. Several issues including packet entrapment due to void region, selection of forwarding node with insufficient link quality and packet collision in congested forwarding area have emanated. Therefore, three different research problems were formulated to address the issue of reliability and energy efficiency in data forwarding in UWSN. First, void handling for packet entrapment in the void region, which generate delays and communication overhead. Second, non-optimal node selection that causes forwarding delays and non-reliable packet delivery. Third, collision due to congestion, which leads to packet drop and unreliable packet delivery. Thus, enhanced reliable and energy-efficient pressure-based data forwarding schemes for UWSN were developed, which are the Communication Void Avoidance (CVA) to estimate neighbour nodes availability outside a void region in order to avoid voids and reduce delay; a Multi-metric Evaluation mechanism for next forwarder Node Selection (MENS) for optimal packet delivery; and a Congestion Avoidance and MITigation (CAMIT) in data forwarding for congestion and collision reduction in order to achieve reliable data forwarding. Several experiments were performed through simulations to access the performance of the proposed mechanisms and the results of each scheme were compared with related previously published protocols. The obtained results depict that the proposed schemes outperformed the existing schemes and significantly improved overall performance. CVA improved Packet Delivery Ratio by 12.8% to 18.7% and reduced End-to-end delay by 7.3% to 12.5% on average. MENS improved communication Data Rate by 13.2% to 15.1% and Energy Consumption improved by 10.6% to 15.3% on average. Lastly, CAMIT reduced Packet Drop ratio by 10.2% to 13% on average. The findings demonstrate the improved efficiency has been achieved by the CVA, MENS and CAMIT in terms of optimal node selection and reliability in packet forwarding in UWSN

    Data analytics for stochastic control and prognostics in cyber-physical systems

    In this dissertation, several novel cyber fault diagnosis and prognosis and defense methodologies for cyber-physical systems have been proposed. First, a novel routing scheme for wireless mesh network is proposed. An effective capacity estimation for P2P and E2E path is designed to guarantee the vital transmission safety. This scheme can ensure a high quality of service (QoS) under imperfect network condition, even cyber attacks. Then, the imperfection, uncertainties, and dynamics in the cyberspace are considered both in system model and controller design. A PDF identifier is proposed to capture the time-varying delays and its distribution. With the modification of traditional stochastic optimal control using PDF of delays, the assumption of full knowledge of network imperfection in priori is relaxed. This proposed controller is considered a novel resilience control strategy for cyber fault diagnosis and prognosis. After that, we turn to the development of a general framework for cyber fault diagnosis and prognosis schemes for CPSs wherein the cyberspace performance affect the physical system and vice versa. A novel cyber fault diagnosis scheme is proposed. It is capable of detecting cyber fault by monitoring the probability of delays. Also, the isolation of cyber and physical system fault is achieved with cooperating with the traditional observer based physical system fault detection. Next, a novel cyber fault prognosis scheme, which can detect and estimate cyber fault and its negative effects on system performance ahead of time, is proposed. Moreover, soft and hard cyber faults are isolated depending on whether potential threats on system stability is predicted. Finally, one-class SVM is employed to classify healthy and erroneous delays.
