The reality of information systems research
The examination of a practical issue with a web site has led, in this paper, directly to the consideration of the need for, and an assessment of the impact of, an approach based on fundamental theories of ‘what is’, to examine what information systems research is and the relations of its component areas of endeavour. The paper presents an examination of the use of the philosophical field of ontologies, and specifically the use of the ontological approaches upon which to base categories of information systems research activities. This theoretical analysis is intended to be used as the basis from which to develop a methodology to undertake the development of the categorial scheme for the web site that initiated the research.<br /

The subject matter of the article is information and communication networks of critical infrastructure systems. The goal of the work is to create an approach for strategic managing the security of critical infrastructure systems taking into account the risks of the information and communication network. The article deals with the following tasks: determining the procedure of strategic managing the security of critical infrastructure systems, identifying the risks of the information and communication network, assessing the importance and probability of partial network risks. The following methods are used: a systematic approach, cause-and-effect analysis, statistical methods. The following results are obtained: the diagram of multi-level risk management of critical infrastructure systems is developed; the diagram of the step-by-step method of information risks management is developed for increasing the safety of the system; the complex index is suggested for determining the category of information system security; probable variants of the full-factor environment of a set of values of the complex index elements and the corresponding categories of information systems security are analyzed; the process of adaptation of the system as an integral part of the selection and specification of measures for the risk reduction of the information and communication network is determined; the example of the risk assessment of the information and communication network for a software and hardware complex in the automated control system of technological processes is considered. Taking into account the categories of factors, a list of probable risks of the information and communication network and factors that cause them is given; the cause-and-effect diagram of "cause-risk-effect" interaction is created; the total effect of each factor on the final vertices of the diagram, that is possible effects, is calculated; the factors were grouped as the most important, quite important, of mean importance, and inconsiderable ones.ΠΡΠ΅Π΄ΠΌΠ΅ΡΠΎΠΌ Π΄ΠΎΡΠ»ΡΠ΄ΠΆΠ΅Π½Π½Ρ Π² ΡΡΠ°ΡΡΡ Ρ ΡΠ½ΡΠΎΠΊΠΎΠΌΡΠ½ΡΠΊΠ°ΡΡΠΉΠ½Ρ ΠΌΠ΅ΡΠ΅ΠΆΡ ΡΠΈΡΡΠ΅ΠΌ ΠΊΡΠΈΡΠΈΡΠ½ΠΎΡ ΡΠ½ΡΡΠ°ΡΡΡΡΠΊΡΡΡΠΈ. How do High Energy Physics scholars search their information?
Grey literature has always been the main conduit of scholarly communication for High-Energy Physics (HEP)researchers. An efficient way of searching and accessing this information is a central part of their research workflow. In 2007, a survey was conducted to understand which information resources HEP scholars use to find the information they need. The results of this survey are presented. Over 2000 answers, representing about one-tenth of the active HEP community, were collected and show that community-driven resources largely dominate the landscape, with commercial services serving only a small proportion of the users. In addition, HEP scholars appear to use different tools for different information needs, which are clearly prioritized. Finally, the results of the survey shed light on the future information needs of HEP scientists over the next five years
Focus Issue on Legacy Information Systems and Business Process Change: Introduction
This editorial is an introduction to a focus issue on legacy information systems research that has been conducted under the aegis of the UK Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) research programme into systems engineering and business process change. An overview of the legacy information systems problem is presented in terms of its scale, definition, and relevance to practicing managers and academics. It is shown that legacy systems represent a critical area of study in both software engineering and strategic information systems. The legacy system issues include the software methods and costs of maintaining and evolving existing systems, the technical problems of migrating complex legacy systems to new technology, and the difficulties of designing and implementing novel business processes in the context of existing structures, strategies and systems. In addition to the problems associated with legacy systems, the strategic opportunities of exploiting legacy systems are also outlined. Six related papers, which together cover the identification of the problem, planning and modelling of change, and the implementation of new systems and business processes, are described

The implementation of an open-source ERP online solution to support laboratory classes and students assessment in higher education during Covid-19 lockdown
Trabalho apresentado em 15th anual International Conference of Education, Research and
Innovation (ICERI2022), 7-9 novembro 2022, Sevilha, EspanhaThis article describes the implementation of an online Open-Source Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) software solution to support the laboratory component of the theoretical/laboratory classes of the curricular unit βInformation and Communication Technologies in Distribution and Logistics Managementβ of the degree in βDistribution and Logistics Managementβ and its contribution to the student assessment process, during the Covid-19 lockdown and resulting restrictions imposed to the normal functioning of presential classroom lessons in the period 2020-2022.
The curricular unit's program foresees the use of demonstrative and experimental methods to illustrate the role of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) support to the fundamental area of the study cycle. An ERP software solution and a database from a simulation company are normally used in classroom-based classes to carry out laboratory exercises, where it is intended to highlight the role of ICT as a facilitator of supply chain processes and logistical activities.
The objective of implementing this online solution was to continue to ensure the teaching of the laboratory component, which was initially limited to use in the classroom. It was thus possible to continue helping students to develop their knowledge and practical technical experience in accordance with the curricular unit Μs program. The technological implementation of the solution and the training of the teachers involved had to be carried out in a very short period.
From a methodological point of view, an approach based on experiential learning was used and the ePortfolio, as instrument to assess the practical knowledge acquired. Demonstrations of the system with resolution of synchronous online laboratory exercises, online debate and clarification sessions, recordings with resolution of laboratory exercises for asynchronous viewing and the proposal of exercises to be integrated in the ePortfolio were used.
This article details the laboratory structure that was developed, taught, and evaluated to the students of the 2nd year of the degree course, at the School of Business Administration of the Polytechnic Institute of SetΓΊbal, in Portugal.
The results of the students assessment in the laboratory component were positive, and the proposed solution contributed to the conclusion of the curricular unit. The ERP OPEN-Source solution was also evaluated by the students through a survey, and the results revealed a positive impact of the approach in the acquisition of knowledge and practical technical experience.N/
