Supporting students with learning disabilities to explore linear relationships using online learning objects
The study of linear relationships is foundational for mathematics teaching and learning. However, studentsā abilities connect different representations of linear relationships have proven to be challenging. In response, a computer-based instructional sequence was designed to support studentsā understanding of the connections among representations. In this paper we report on the affordances of this dynamic mode of representation specifically for students with learning disabilities. We outline four results identified by teachers as they implemented the online lessons

Jim Kaput lived a full life in mathematics education and we have many reasons to be grateful to him, not only for his vision of the use of technology in mathematics, but also for his fundamental humanity. This paper considers the origins of his ābig ideasā as he lived through the most amazing innovations in technology that have changed our lives more in a generation than in many centuries before. His vision continues as is exemplified by the collected papers in this tribute to his life and work
Perceptions on proof and the teaching of proof: A comparison across preservice secondary teachers in Australia, USA and Korea
Despite the recognised importance of mathematical proof in secondary education, there is a limited but growing body of literature indicating how preservice secondary mathematics teachers (PSMTs) view proof and the teaching of proof. The purpose of this survey research was to investigate how PSMTs in Australia, the USA and Korea perceive of proof in the context of secondary mathematics teaching and learning. PSMTs were able to outline various mathematical and pedagogical aspects of proof, including purposes, characteristics, reasons for teaching and imposed constraints. In addition, PSMTs attended to differing, though overlapping, features of proof when asked to determine the extent to which proposed arguments constituted proofs or to decide which arguments they might present to students
Curriculum Guidelines for Undergraduate Programs in Data Science
The Park City Math Institute (PCMI) 2016 Summer Undergraduate Faculty Program
met for the purpose of composing guidelines for undergraduate programs in Data
Science. The group consisted of 25 undergraduate faculty from a variety of
institutions in the U.S., primarily from the disciplines of mathematics,
statistics and computer science. These guidelines are meant to provide some
structure for institutions planning for or revising a major in Data Science
Mathematics in Hands-On Science for Liberal Arts Students
We describe a number of experiments from the courses called, General Science 9, part of the science program for elementary education majors at Brooklyn College. These courses provide hands-on learning experiences for students who are insecure and weak in science and mathematics. Quantitative thinking is a central element in most of the studentsā work. Mathematics is taught in a concrete and intuitive way, as a direct outgrowth of their needs; first, in analysis of data, and second, in discovering underlying theory. The science program has been developed through cooperation among faculty from the School of Education and the science departments
