How to Choose the Relevant MAC Protocol for Wireless Smart Parking Urban Networks?
Parking sensor network is rapidly deploying around the world and is regarded
as one of the first implemented urban services in smart cities. To provide the
best network performance, the MAC protocol shall be adaptive enough in order to
satisfy the traffic intensity and variation of parking sensors. In this paper,
we study the heavy-tailed parking and vacant time models from SmartSantander,
and then we apply the traffic model in the simulation with four different kinds
of MAC protocols, that is, contention-based, schedule-based and two hybrid
versions of them. The result shows that the packet interarrival time is no
longer heavy-tailed while collecting a group of parking sensors, and then
choosing an appropriate MAC protocol highly depends on the network
configuration. Also, the information delay is bounded by traffic and MAC

Performance enhancement of large scale networks with heterogeneous traffic.
Finally, these findings are applied towards improving the performance of the Differentiated Services architecture by developing a new Refined Assured Forwarding framework where heterogeneous traffic flows share the same aggregate class. The new framework requires minimal modification to the existing Diffserv routers. The efficiency of the new architecture in enhancing the performance of Diffserv is demonstrated by simulation results under different traffic scenarios.This dissertation builds on the notion that segregating traffic with disparate characteristics into separate channels generally results in a better performance. Through a quantitative analysis, it precisely defines the number of classes and the allocation of traffic into these classes that will lead to optimal performance from a latency standpoint. Additionally, it weakens the most generally used assumption of exponential or geometric distribution of traffic service time in the integration versus segregation studies to date by including self-similarity in network traffic.The dissertation also develops a pricing model based on resource usage in a system with segregated channels. Based on analytical results, this dissertation proposes a scheme whereby a service provider can develop compensatory and fair prices for customers with varying QoS requirements under a wide variety of ambient traffic scenarios.This dissertation provides novel techniques for improving the Quality of Service by enhancing the performance of queue management in large scale packet switched networks with a high volume of traffic. Networks combine traffic from multiple sources which have disparate characteristics. Multiplexing such heterogeneous traffic usually results in adverse effects on the overall performance of the network
Datacenter Traffic Control: Understanding Techniques and Trade-offs
Datacenters provide cost-effective and flexible access to scalable compute
and storage resources necessary for today's cloud computing needs. A typical
datacenter is made up of thousands of servers connected with a large network
and usually managed by one operator. To provide quality access to the variety
of applications and services hosted on datacenters and maximize performance, it
deems necessary to use datacenter networks effectively and efficiently.
Datacenter traffic is often a mix of several classes with different priorities
and requirements. This includes user-generated interactive traffic, traffic
with deadlines, and long-running traffic. To this end, custom transport
protocols and traffic management techniques have been developed to improve
datacenter network performance.
In this tutorial paper, we review the general architecture of datacenter
networks, various topologies proposed for them, their traffic properties,
general traffic control challenges in datacenters and general traffic control
objectives. The purpose of this paper is to bring out the important
characteristics of traffic control in datacenters and not to survey all
existing solutions (as it is virtually impossible due to massive body of
existing research). We hope to provide readers with a wide range of options and
factors while considering a variety of traffic control mechanisms. We discuss
various characteristics of datacenter traffic control including management
schemes, transmission control, traffic shaping, prioritization, load balancing,
multipathing, and traffic scheduling. Next, we point to several open challenges
as well as new and interesting networking paradigms. At the end of this paper,
we briefly review inter-datacenter networks that connect geographically
dispersed datacenters which have been receiving increasing attention recently

When Channel Bonding is Beneficial for Opportunistic Spectrum Access Networks
Transmission over multiple frequency bands combined into one logical channel
speeds up data transfer for wireless networks. On the other hand, the
allocation of multiple channels to a single user decreases the probability of
finding a free logical channel for new connections, which may result in a
network-wide throughput loss. While this relationship has been studied
experimentally, especially in the WLAN configuration, little is known on how to
analytically model such phenomena. With the advent of Opportunistic Spectrum
Access (OSA) networks, it is even more important to understand the
circumstances in which it is beneficial to bond channels occupied by primary
users with dynamic duty cycle patterns. In this paper we propose an analytical
framework which allows the investigation of the average channel throughput at
the medium access control layer for OSA networks with channel bonding enabled.
We show that channel bonding is generally beneficial, though the extent of the
benefits depend on the features of the OSA network, including OSA network size
and the total number of channels available for bonding. In addition, we show
that performance benefits can be realized by adaptively changing the number of
bonded channels depending on network conditions. Finally, we evaluate channel
bonding considering physical layer constraints, i.e. throughput reduction
compared to the theoretical throughput of a single virtual channel due to a

Differentiated Predictive Fair Service for TCP Flows
The majority of the traffic (bytes) flowing over the Internet today have been attributed to the Transmission Control Protocol (TCP). This strong presence of TCP has recently spurred further investigations into its congestion avoidance mechanism and its effect on the performance of short and long data transfers. At the same time, the rising interest in enhancing Internet services while keeping the implementation cost low has led to several service-differentiation proposals. In such service-differentiation architectures, much of the complexity is placed only in access routers, which classify and mark packets from different flows. Core routers can then allocate enough resources to each class of packets so as to satisfy delivery requirements, such as predictable (consistent) and fair service.
In this paper, we investigate the interaction among short and long TCP flows, and how TCP service can be improved by employing a low-cost service-differentiation scheme. Through control-theoretic arguments and extensive simulations, we show the utility of isolating TCP flows into two classes based on their lifetime/size, namely one class of short flows and another of long flows. With such class-based isolation, short and long TCP flows have separate service queues at routers. This protects each class of flows from the other as they possess different characteristics, such as burstiness of arrivals/departures and congestion/sending window dynamics. We show the benefits of isolation, in terms of better predictability and fairness, over traditional shared queueing systems with both tail-drop and Random-Early-Drop (RED) packet dropping policies. The proposed class-based isolation of TCP flows has several advantages: (1) the implementation cost is low since it only requires core routers to maintain per-class (rather than per-flow) state; (2) it promises to be an effective traffic engineering tool for improved predictability and fairness for both short and long TCP flows; and (3) stringent delay requirements of short interactive transfers can be met by increasing the amount of resources allocated to the class of short flows.National Science Foundation (CAREER ANI-0096045, MRI EIA-9871022
The origin of bursts and heavy tails in human dynamics
The dynamics of many social, technological and economic phenomena are driven
by individual human actions, turning the quantitative understanding of human
behavior into a central question of modern science. Current models of human
dynamics, used from risk assessment to communications, assume that human
actions are randomly distributed in time and thus well approximated by Poisson
processes. In contrast, there is increasing evidence that the timing of many
human activities, ranging from communication to entertainment and work
patterns, follow non-Poisson statistics, characterized by bursts of rapidly
occurring events separated by long periods of inactivity. Here we show that the
bursty nature of human behavior is a consequence of a decision based queuing
process: when individuals execute tasks based on some perceived priority, the
timing of the tasks will be heavy tailed, most tasks being rapidly executed,
while a few experience very long waiting times. In contrast, priority blind
execution is well approximated by uniform interevent statistics. These findings
have important implications from resource management to service allocation in

QuickCast: Fast and Efficient Inter-Datacenter Transfers using Forwarding Tree Cohorts
Large inter-datacenter transfers are crucial for cloud service efficiency and
are increasingly used by organizations that have dedicated wide area networks
between datacenters. A recent work uses multicast forwarding trees to reduce
the bandwidth needs and improve completion times of point-to-multipoint
transfers. Using a single forwarding tree per transfer, however, leads to poor
performance because the slowest receiver dictates the completion time for all
receivers. Using multiple forwarding trees per transfer alleviates this
concern--the average receiver could finish early; however, if done naively,
bandwidth usage would also increase and it is apriori unclear how best to
partition receivers, how to construct the multiple trees and how to determine
the rate and schedule of flows on these trees. This paper presents QuickCast, a
first solution to these problems. Using simulations on real-world network
topologies, we see that QuickCast can speed up the average receiver's
completion time by as much as while only using more
bandwidth; further, the completion time for all receivers also improves by as
