    Cooperative Caching for Multimedia Streaming in Overlay Networks

    Traditional data caching, such as web caching, only focuses on how to boost the hit rate of requested objects in caches, and therefore, how to reduce the initial delay for object retrieval. However, for multimedia objects, not only reducing the delay of object retrieval, but also provisioning reasonably stable network bandwidth to clients, while the fetching of the cached objects goes on, is important as well. In this paper, we propose our cooperative caching scheme for a multimedia delivery scenario, supporting a large number of peers over peer-to-peer overlay networks. In order to facilitate multimedia streaming and downloading service from servers, our caching scheme (1) determines the appropriate availability of cached stream segments in a cache community, (2) determines the appropriate peer for cache replacement, and (3) performs bandwidth-aware and availability-aware cache replacement. By doing so, it achieves (1) small delay of stream retrieval, (2) stable bandwidth provisioning during retrieval session, and (3) load balancing of clients' requests among peers

    Random Linear Network Coding for 5G Mobile Video Delivery

    An exponential increase in mobile video delivery will continue with the demand for higher resolution, multi-view and large-scale multicast video services. Novel fifth generation (5G) 3GPP New Radio (NR) standard will bring a number of new opportunities for optimizing video delivery across both 5G core and radio access networks. One of the promising approaches for video quality adaptation, throughput enhancement and erasure protection is the use of packet-level random linear network coding (RLNC). In this review paper, we discuss the integration of RLNC into the 5G NR standard, building upon the ideas and opportunities identified in 4G LTE.     Traditionele Internetgebaseerde diensten voor het verspreiden van bestanden, zoals Web browsen en het versturen van e-mails, worden aangeboden via één centrale server. Meer recente netwerkdiensten zoals interactieve digitale televisie of video-op-aanvraag vereisen echter hoge kwaliteitsgaranties (QoS), zoals een lage en constante netwerkvertraging, en verbruiken een aanzienlijke hoeveelheid bandbreedte op het netwerk. Architecturen met één centrale server kunnen deze garanties moeilijk bieden en voldoen daarom niet meer aan de hoge eisen van de volgende generatie multimediatoepassingen. In dit onderzoek worden daarom nieuwe netwerkarchitecturen bestudeerd, die een dergelijke dienstkwaliteit kunnen ondersteunen. Zowel peer-to-peer mechanismes, zoals bij het uitwisselen van muziekbestanden tussen eindgebruikers, als servergebaseerde oplossingen, zoals gedistribueerde caches en content distributie netwerken (CDN's), komen aan bod. Afhankelijk van de bestudeerde dienst en de gebruikte netwerktechnologieën en -architectuur, worden gecentraliseerde algoritmen voor netwerkontwerp voorgesteld. Deze algoritmen optimaliseren de plaatsing van de servers of netwerkcaches en bepalen de nodige capaciteit van de servers en netwerklinks. De dynamische plaatsing van de aangeboden bestanden in de verschillende netwerkelementen wordt aangepast aan de heersende staat van het netwerk en aan de variërende aanvraagpatronen van de eindgebruikers.     Strategies of collaboration in multi-channel P2P VoD streaming

    As compared to live peer-to-peer (P2P) streaming, modern P2P video-on-demand (VoD) systems have brought much larger volumes of videos and more interactive controls to the Internet users. Nevertheless, the larger number of available videos and the flexibility of allowing users to jump back and forth in a video, have led to much fewer numbers of concurrent peers watching at a similar pace, that reduces the chance for collaborative chunk supply among peers and thus significantly increases the server bandwidth cost [1]. Towards the ultimate goal of maximizing peer resource utilization, in this paper, we design effective strategies for both cross-channel and intra-channel collaborations in multi-channel P2P VoD systems, such that individual peer's resources, including download/upload bandwidths and the cache capacity, are effectively utilized to maximize the streaming qualities in all the channels. In particular, each peer actively and strategically determines the supply-and-demand imbalance in different channels, as well as that among different chunks within each video, makes use of its surplus download capacity to fetch chunks with the most need, and then serves those chunks using its idle upload bandwidth, all without impairing its own streaming quality.     Efficient Traffic Management Algorithms for the Core Network using Device-to-Device Communication and Edge Caching

    Exponentially growing number of communicating devices and the need for faster, more reliable and secure communication are becoming major challenges for current mobile communication architecture. More number of connected devices means more bandwidth and a need for higher Quality of Service (QoS) requirements, which bring new challenges in terms of resource and traffic management. Traffic offload to the edge has been introduced to tackle this demand-explosion that let the core network offload some of the contents to the edge to reduce the traffic congestion. Device-to-Device (D2D) communication and edge caching, has been proposed as promising solutions for offloading data. D2D communication refers to the communication infrastructure where the users in proximity communicate with each other directly. D2D communication improves overall spectral efficiency, however, it introduces additional interference in the system. To enable D2D communication, efficient resource allocation must be introduced in order to minimize the interference in the system and this benefits the system in terms of bandwidth efficiency. In the first part of this thesis, low complexity resource allocation algorithm using stable matching is proposed to optimally assign appropriate uplink resources to the devices in order to minimize interference among D2D and cellular users. Edge caching has recently been introduced as a modification of the caching scheme in the core network, which enables a cellular Base Station (BS) to keep copies of the contents in order to better serve users and enhance Quality of Experience (QoE). However, enabling BSs to cache data on the edge of the network brings new challenges especially on deciding on which and how the contents should be cached. Since users in the same cell may share similar content-needs, we can exploit this temporal-spatial correlation in the favor of caching system which is referred to local content popularity. Content popularity is the most important factor in the caching scheme which helps the BSs to cache appropriate data in order to serve the users more efficiently. In the edge caching scheme, the BS does not know the users request-pattern in advance. To overcome this bottleneck, a content popularity prediction using Markov Decision Process (MDP) is proposed in the second part of this thesis to let the BS know which data should be cached in each time-slot. By using the proposed scheme, core network access request can be significantly reduced and it works better than caching based on historical data in both stable and unstable content popularity
