    Semantic web technologies for video surveillance metadata

    Video surveillance systems are growing in size and complexity. Such systems typically consist of integrated modules of different vendors to cope with the increasing demands on network and storage capacity, intelligent video analytics, picture quality, and enhanced visual interfaces. Within a surveillance system, relevant information (like technical details on the video sequences, or analysis results of the monitored environment) is described using metadata standards. However, different modules typically use different standards, resulting in metadata interoperability problems. In this paper, we introduce the application of Semantic Web Technologies to overcome such problems. We present a semantic, layered metadata model and integrate it within a video surveillance system. Besides dealing with the metadata interoperability problem, the advantages of using Semantic Web Technologies and the inherent rule support are shown. A practical use case scenario is presented to illustrate the benefits of our novel approach

    Video spatio-temporal filtering based on cameras and target objects trajectories - Videosurveillance forensic framework

    International audienceThis paper presents our work about assisting video-surveillance agents in the search for particular video scenes of interest in transit network. This work has been developed based on requirements defined within different projects with the French National Police in a forensic goal. The video-surveillance agent inputs a query in the form of a hybrid trajectory (date, time, locations expressed with regards to different reference systems) and potentially some visual descriptions of the scene. The query processing starts with the interpretation of the hybrid trajectory and continues with a selection of a set of cameras likely to have filmed the spatial trajectory. The main contributions of this paper are: (1) a definition of the hybrid trajectory query concept, trajectory that is constituted of geometrical and symbolic segments represented with regards to different reference systems (e.g., Geodesic system, road network), (2) a spatio-temporal filtering framework based on a spatio-temporal modeling of the transit network and associated cameras

    International audienceThis paper presents an ongoing work that aims at assisting videoprotection agents in the search for particular video scenes of interest in transit network. The video-protection agent inputs a query in the form of date, time, location and a visual description of the scene. The query processing starts by selecting a set of cameras likely to have filmed the scene followed by an analysis of the video content obtained from these cameras. The main contribution of this paper is the innovative framework that is composed of: (1) a spatiotemporal filtering method based on a spatio-temporal modeling of the transit network and associated cameras, and (2)a content-based retrieval based method on visual features. The presented filtering framework is to be tested on real data acquired within a French National project in partnership with the French Interior Ministry and the French National Police. The project aims at setting up public demonstrators that will be used by researchers and commercials from the video-protection community

    NASA SBIR abstracts of 1991 phase 1 projects

    The objectives of 301 projects placed under contract by the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) program of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) are described. These projects were selected competitively from among proposals submitted to NASA in response to the 1991 SBIR Program Solicitation. The basic document consists of edited, non-proprietary abstracts of the winning proposals submitted by small businesses. The abstracts are presented under the 15 technical topics within which Phase 1 proposals were solicited. Each project was assigned a sequential identifying number from 001 to 301, in order of its appearance in the body of the report. Appendixes to provide additional information about the SBIR program and permit cross-reference of the 1991 Phase 1 projects by company name, location by state, principal investigator, NASA Field Center responsible for management of each project, and NASA contract number are included

    DelosDLMS: From the DELOS vision to the implementation of a future digital library management system

    DelosDLMS is a novel digital library management system (DLMS) that has been developed as an integration effort within the DELOS Network of Excellence, a European Commission initiative funded under its fifth and sixth framework programs. In this paper, we describe DelosDLMS that takes into account the recommendations of several activities that were initiated by DELOS including the DELOS vision for digital libraries (DLs). A key aspect of DelosDLMS is its novel generic infrastructure that allows the generation of digital library systems out of a set of basic system services and DL services in a modular and extensible way. DL services like feature extraction, visualization, intelligent browsing, media-type-specific indexing, support for multilinguality, relevance feedback and many others can easily be incorporated or replaced. A further key aspect of DelosDLMS is its robustness against failures and its scalability for large collections and many parallel user requests. We discuss the current status of an effort to build DelosDLMS, a Digital Library Management System that integrates in various ways several components developed by DELOS members and showcases a great variety of functionality that is outlined as part of the DELOS visio

    Data Curation, Fisheries, and Ecosystem-based Management: the Case Study of the Pecheker Database

    The scientific monitoring of the Southern Ocean French fishing industry is based on the use the Pecheker database. Pecheker is dedicated to the digital curation of the data collected on field by scientific observers and which analysis allows the scientists of the Muséum national d’Histoire naturelle institution to provide guidelines and advice for the regulation of the fishing activity, the protection of the fish stocks and the protection of the marine ecosystems. The template of Pecheker has been developed to make the database adapted to the ecosystem-based management concept. Considering the global context of biodiversity erosion, this modern approach of management aims to take account of the environmental background of the fisheries to ensure their sustainable development. Completeness and high quality of the raw data is a key element for an ecosystem-based management database such as Pecheker. Here, we present the development of this database as a case study of fisheries data curation to be shared with the readers. Full code to deploy a database based on the Pecheker template is provided in supplementary materials. Considering the success factors we could identify, we propose a discussion about how the community could build a global fisheries information system based on a network of small databases including interoperability standards
