    The paper presents a project management competencies model, using an ontological approach. The ontology, named PMCatalog, was developed in the framework of the project CONTO, financed by Romanian through the grant 91-037/2007. PMCatalog is consistent with the competence definition and PM competence elements included in the International Competence Baseline, the competency standard of the International Project Management Association. The main PMCatalog’s use cases for commercial activities in sustainable development projects are described.     Improving social capital: a social network monitoring system

    To increase communication and collaboration opportunities, members of a community must be aware of the social networks that exist within that community. This paper describes a social network monitoring system that enables users to register their interactions and visualize their social networks. The system was implemented in two distributed learning communities and the results have shown that this system facilitates collecting information about social interactions. Furthermore, the visualization of the social networks, given as feedback, appeared to have a positive impact on users, augmenting their social network awareness.Postprint (published version

    Exploiting the user interaction context for automatic task detection

    Detecting the task a user is performing on her computer desktop is important for providing her with contextualized and personalized support. Some recent approaches propose to perform automatic user task detection by means of classifiers using captured user context data. In this paper we improve on that by using an ontology-based user interaction context model that can be automatically populated by (i) capturing simple user interaction events on the computer desktop and (ii) applying rule-based and information extraction mechanisms. We present evaluation results from a large user study we have carried out in a knowledge-intensive business environment, showing that our ontology-based approach provides new contextual features yielding good task detection performance. We also argue that good results can be achieved by training task classifiers `online' on user context data gathered in laboratory settings. Finally, we isolate a combination of contextual features that present a significantly better discriminative power than classical ones

    Resources and users in the tagging process: approaches and case studies

    In this contribution we propose a comparison between two distinct approaches to the annotation of digital resources. The former, top-down, is rooted in the cathedral model and is based on an authoritative, centralized definition of the adopted mark-up language; the latter, bottom-up, refers to the bazaar model and is based on the contributions of a community of users. These two approaches are analyzed taking into account both their descriptive potential and the constraints they impose on the reasoning process of recommender systems, with special reference to user profiling. Three case studies are described, with reference to research projects that apply these approaches in the contexts of e-learning and knowledge management

    A web-based learning system for software test professionals

    Fierce competition, globalization, and technology innovation have forced software companies to search for new ways to improve competitive advantage. Web-based learning is increasingly being used by software companies as an emergent approach for enhancing the skills of knowledge workers. However, the current practice of Web-based learning is perceived as being less goal-effective due to a lack of alignment of learning with work performance. To solve this problem, a performance-oriented approach is presented in this study. Using this approach, a Web-based learning system has been developed for software testing professionals. An empirical study was conducted by inviting employees working in the software testing sector to use and evaluate the system.     The enhancement of collaborative learning through integrated knowledge management systems: E-learning model

    There are still a few educational platforms that apply a Knowledge Management System (KMS) concept in conducting its operational work. In addition, several obstacles associated with e-learning implementation trigger the in-effectiveness of collaborative learning. However, the concept of Knowledge Management (KM) from a Sharia perspective has significant implications for education systems. This research, therefore, explored the relevance of the Learning Management System (LMS), KM theory, and Sharia education perspective on the development of the Integrated Knowledge Management System (IKMS) Framework. The IKMS components and structures are literature reviewed and then qualitatively justified through the focus group discussion which involved some students, lectures, and experts from two Sharia-based Universities in Indonesia. To verify and test the framework, an IKMS-Edu system was developed by focusing on the adoption of a controlling agent system in the online discussion. Herein, filtering and summarization technology was embedded into IKMS-Edu towards a smart controlling agent. This agent adopted the operational work of IKMS-Edu framework leveraging in four constructs activities viz., knowledge creation and knowledge acquisition (construct 1), knowledge organization and knowledge storage (construct 2), knowledge dissemination and knowledge retrieval (construct 3), and knowledge evaluation and feedback (construct 4). To date, the statistical evaluation of the IKMS-Edu system’s acceptance is conducted by disseminating the questionnaires. The mean scores revealed 40.45% of the respondents strongly agreed, and 42.18% agreed on the proposed framework and prototype system thus the framework aided in performing the IKMS during the collaborative learning activities. As such, this evidence provides the strong support that IKMS-Edu significantly enhanced the effectiveness of collaborative learning by considering the Sharia values of trust, knowledge, virtue, psychosocial, and civilization development into knowledge management activities
