    Cramer-Rao Bounds for Joint RSS/DoA-Based Primary-User Localization in Cognitive Radio Networks

    Knowledge about the location of licensed primary-users (PU) could enable several key features in cognitive radio (CR) networks including improved spatio-temporal sensing, intelligent location-aware routing, as well as aiding spectrum policy enforcement. In this paper we consider the achievable accuracy of PU localization algorithms that jointly utilize received-signal-strength (RSS) and direction-of-arrival (DoA) measurements by evaluating the Cramer-Rao Bound (CRB). Previous works evaluate the CRB for RSS-only and DoA-only localization algorithms separately and assume DoA estimation error variance is a fixed constant or rather independent of RSS. We derive the CRB for joint RSS/DoA-based PU localization algorithms based on the mathematical model of DoA estimation error variance as a function of RSS, for a given CR placement. The bound is compared with practical localization algorithms and the impact of several key parameters, such as number of nodes, number of antennas and samples, channel shadowing variance and correlation distance, on the achievable accuracy are thoroughly analyzed and discussed. We also derive the closed-form asymptotic CRB for uniform random CR placement, and perform theoretical and numerical studies on the required number of CRs such that the asymptotic CRB tightly approximates the numerical integration of the CRB for a given placement.Comment: 20 pages, 11 figures, 1 table, submitted to IEEE Transactions on Wireless Communication

    Directional Antenna System-Based DoA/RSS Estimation, Localization and Tracking in Future Wireless Networks: Algorithms and Performance Analysis

    Location information plays an important role in many emerging technologies such as robotics, autonomous vehicles, and augmented reality. Already now the majority of smartphone owners use their devices' localization capabilities for a broad range of location-based services. Currently, location information in smartphones is mostly obtained in a device-centric approach, where the device to be localized, here referred to as the target node (TN), estimates its own location using, for example, the global positioning system (GPS). However, TNs with wireless communication capabilities can be localized based on their transmitted signals by a third party. In particular, localization can be implemented as a functionality of a wireless network. Depending on the application area and implementation, this network-centric approach has several advantages compared to device-centric localization, such as reducing the energy consumption within the TNs, enabling localization of non-cooperative TNs, and making location information available in the network itself. Current generation wireless networks are already capable of coarse localization. However, these existing localization capabilities do not suffice for the challenging demands of future applications. The majority of approaches moreover does not exploit the fact that an increasing number of base stations (BSs) and user devices are equipped with directional antennas. However, directional antennas enable direction of arrival (DoA) estimation that can, in turn, serve as the basis for advanced localization and location tracking. In this thesis, we thus study the application of directional antennas for localization and location tracking in future generation wireless networks. The contributions of this thesis can be grouped into two topics.First, this thesis provides a detailed study of DoA/received signal strength (RSS) estimation and localization with a group of directional antennas herein denoted as sectorized antennas. This group of antennas is of particular interest as it encompasses a broad range of directional antennas that can be implemented with a single RF front-end. Thus, the hardware complexity of sectorized antennas is low in comparison to the conventionally used antenna arrays that require multiple transceiver branches. However, at the same time this means that DoA estimation with sectorized antennas has to be implemented in a fundamentally different way. In order to address these differences, the study of sectorized antennas in this thesis includes the derivation of Cramer-Rao bounds (CRBs) for DoA/RSS estimation and localization, the proposal of three different DoA/RSS estimators, as well as numerical and analytical performance evaluations of DoA/RSS estimation and localization using sectorized antennas.Second, this thesis deals with localization based on the fusion of DoA and RSS estimates as well as DoA and time of arrival (ToA) estimates. It is shown that the combination of these estimates can result in a much increased localization performance compared to a localization based on one of these estimates alone. For the localization based on DoA/RSS estimates, a mechanism explaining this improvement is revealed by means of a CRB analysis. Thereafter, DoA/RSS-based fusion is further studied using an extended Kalman filter (EKF) as an example location tracking algorithm. Finally, an EKF is proposed that tracks the location of a TN by fusing DoA and ToA estimates. Apart from a significantly improved tracking performance, this joint DoA/ToA-EKF moreover provides estimates for the TN device clock offset and is able to localize the TN in situations where a classical DoA-only EKF fails to provide a location estimate altogether.Overall, this thesis thus provides insights into benefits of localization and location tracking using directional antennas, accompanied by specific DoA/RSS estimation, localization and location tracking solutions, as well as design guidelines for implementing localization systems in future generation wireless networks

    Integrated Sensing and Communications: Towards Dual-functional Wireless Networks for 6G and Beyond

    As the standardization of 5G solidifies, researchers are speculating what 6G will be. The integration of sensing functionality is emerging as a key feature of the 6G Radio Access Network (RAN), allowing for the exploitation of dense cell infrastructures to construct a perceptive network. In this IEEE Journal on Selected Areas in Commmunications (JSAC) Special Issue overview, we provide a comprehensive review on the background, range of key applications and state-of-the-art approaches of Integrated Sensing and Communications (ISAC). We commence by discussing the interplay between sensing and communications (S&C) from a historical point of view, and then consider the multiple facets of ISAC and the resulting performance gains. By introducing both ongoing and potential use cases, we shed light on the industrial progress and standardization activities related to ISAC. We analyze a number of performance tradeoffs between S&C, spanning from information theoretical limits to physical layer performance tradeoffs, and the cross-layer design tradeoffs. Next, we discuss the signal processing aspects of ISAC, namely ISAC waveform design and receive signal processing. As a step further, we provide our vision on the deeper integration between S&C within the framework of perceptive networks, where the two functionalities are expected to mutually assist each other, i.e., via communication-assisted sensing and sensing-assisted communications. Finally, we identify the potential integration of ISAC with other emerging communication technologies, and their positive impacts on the future of wireless networks

    Envirosuite: An Environmentally-Immersive Programming Framework for Wireless Sensor Networks

    Networked, embedded sensors allow for an instrumentation of the physical world at unprecedented granularities and from unimagined perspectives. The advent of a ubiquitous sensing era is evident. Yet, sensor network techniques are still far from entering mainstream adoption due to multiple unresolved research challenges, especially due to the high development cost of sensor network applications. Therefore, in this dissertation, we propose to design, implement, and evaluate an environmentally-immersive programming framework, called EnviroSuite, to reduce sensor network software development cost. The goal of our research is to create reusable sensor network development support for the community and reduce the adoption barriers for a broader category of users, ultimately leading to a transition of sensor networks from a research concept to a general-purpose technology available for use for a wide variety of research, government, industry, and everyday purposes. Current sensor network programming practice remains very cumbersome and inefficient for several reasons. First, most existing programming abstractions for sensor networks are either too low-level (thus too tedious and error-prone) or too high-level (unable to support the diversity of sensor network applications). Second, there is no clear separation between application-level programming and system-level programming. A significant concern is the lack of a general middleware library to isolate application developers from low-level details. Finally, testing sensor network systems is particularly challenging. Sensor systems interact heavily with a (non-repeatable) physical environment, making lab experiments not representative and on-site experiments very costly. This dissertation is targeted for a comprehensive solution that addresses all the above-mentioned problems. The EnviroSuite framework consists of (i) a new programming paradigm that exports environment-based abstractions, (ii) critical middleware services that support the abstractions and separate application programmers from tedious, low-level details, and (iii) testing tools geared for in-situ experimenting, debugging, and troubleshooting. First, we introduce a new programming paradigm, called environmentally-immersive programming (EIP), to capture the common characteristics of sensor network applications, the rich, distributed interactions with the physical environment. EIP refers to an object-based programming model in which individual objects represent physical elements in the external environment. It allows the programmer to think directly in terms of physical objects or events of interest. We provide language primitives for programmers to easily implement their environmental tracking and monitoring applications in EIP. A preprocessor translates such EIP code transparently into a library of support middleware services, central to which are object management algorithms, responsible for maintaining a unique mapping between physical and logical objects. The major outcome of sensor networks is observations of the instrumented environment, in other words, sensory data. Implementing an application mainly involves encoding how to generate, store, and collect such data. EIP object abstractions provide simple means for programmers to define how observations of the environment should be made via distributed coordination among multiple nodes, thus simplifying data generation. Yet, the next steps, namely, data storage and collection, remain complicated and fastidious. To isolate programmers from such concerns, we also include in the support library a set of data management services, comprising both network protocols and storage systems to allow data to be collected either in real-time or in a delay-tolerant manner. The final phase in sensor network software development life-cycle is testing, typically performed in-field, where the effects of environmental realities can be studied. However, physical events from the dynamic environment are normally asynchronous and non-repeatable. This lack of repeatability makes the last phase particularly difficult and costly. Hence, it is essential to have the capability to capture and replay sensing events, providing a basis not only for software testing, but also for realistic protocol comparison and parameter tuning. To achieve that, EnviroSuite also provides testing and debugging facilities that enable controllable and repeatable in-field experiments. Finally, to demonstrate the benefits of our framework, we build multiple representative applications upon EnviroSuite, drawn from both tracking systems such as military surveillance, and monitoring systems such as environmental acoustic monitoring. We install these applications into off-the-shelf hardware platforms and physically deploy the hardware into realistic environments. Empirical results collected from such deployments demonstrate the efficacy of EnviroSuite

    Super-resolved localisation in multipath environments

    In the last few decades, the localisation problems have been studied extensively. There are still some open issues that remain unresolved. One of the key issues is the efficiency and preciseness of the localisation in presence of non-line-of-sight (NLoS) path. Nevertheless, the NLoS path has a high occurrence in multipath environments, but NLoS bias is viewed as a main factor to severely degrade the localisation performance. The NLoS bias would often result in extra propagation delay and angular bias. Numerous localisation methods have been proposed to deal with NLoS bias in various propagation environments, but they are tailored to some specif ic scenarios due to different prior knowledge requirements, accuracies, computational complexities, and assumptions. To super-resolve the location of mobile device (MD) without prior knowledge, we address the localisation problem by super-resolution technique due to its favourable features, such as working on continuous parameter space, reducing computational cost and good extensibility. Besides the NLoS bias, we consider an extra array directional error which implies the deviation in the orientation of the array placement. The proposed method is able to estimate the locations of MDs and self-calibrate the array directional errors simultaneously. To achieve joint localisation, we directly map MD locations and array directional error to received signals. Then the group sparsity based optimisation is proposed to exploit the geometric consistency that received paths are originating from common MDs. Note that the super-resolution framework cannot be directly applied to our localisation problems. Because the proposed objective function cannot be efficiently solved by semi-definite programming. Typical strategies focus on reducing adverse effect due to the NLoS bias by separating line-of-sight (LoS)/NLoS path or mitigating NLoS effect. The LoS path is well studied for localisation and multiple methods have been proposed in the literature. However, the number of LoS paths are typically limited and the effect of NLoS bias may not always be reduced completely. As a long-standing issue, the suitable solution of using NLoS path is still an open topic for research. Instead of dealing with NLoS bias, we present a novel localisation method that exploits both LoS and NLoS paths in the same manner. The unique feature is avoiding hard decisions on separating LoS and NLoS paths and hence relevant possible error. A grid-free sparse inverse problem is formulated for localisation which avoids error propagation between multiple stages, handles multipath in a unified way, and guarantees a global convergence. Extensive localisation experiments on different propagation environments and localisation systems are presented to illustrate the high performance of the proposed algorithm compared with theoretical analysis. In one of the case studies, single antenna access points (APs) can locate a single antenna MD even when all paths between them are NLoS, which according to the authors’ knowledge is the first time in the literature.Open Acces
