    The portable sensor network: Conceptualization and development of a modular, upgradable, and reusable sensor system for the provision of offensive and defensive surveillance

    In the 21st century, law-enforcement, military, border patrol, and private companies all use a wide variety of surveillance equipment that is tailored to their specific needs. This equipment is expensive, typically requires an enormous capital investment, and often fails to live up to expectations; there must be a better way. The primary objective of this thesis is to conceptualize a new and more capable surveillance system, dubbed the Portable Sensor Network (PSN), which can either augment or entirely replace existing systems. The core concept of the PSN demands that it must affordable, portable, modular, and based on existing, commercially available technology. To achieve this goal a four step methodology has been developed: analysis of customer’s needs, analysis of the capabilities and features of existing systems, development of the PSN based on that analyses, and finally, analysis of the fully developed PSN’s effectiveness via analytical methods borrowed from the field of intelligence analysis. By the end of this thesis, it should be clear to the reader which surveillance system(s) are most effective in a given scenario and how the PSN can augment or replace that system(s)

    Energy Efficient Approach for Surveillance Applications Based on Self Organized Wireless Sensor Networks

    AbstractSurveillance applications based on Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) are energy consumption sensitive. Such applications require low energy consumption in order to extend network lifetime. In this paper, we are interested in event detection around strategic sites (e.g., oil or military sites). We propose energy efficient approach which consists of identifying and using network boundary nodes as sentries, i.e., they are always in active mode and are responsible of detecting events, sending and relaying alert messages to the sink. Remaining nodes are used as relay nodes only. They alternate between active and sleep modes in order to reduce energy consumption. Simulation results show that our approach increases significantly network lifetime and provides an acceptable percentage of alerts delivered to the sink

    MOSAIC vision and scenarios for mobile collaborative work related to health and wellbeing

    The main objective of the MOSAIC project is to accelerate innovation in Mobile Worker Support Environments by shaping future research and innovation activities in Europe. The modus operandi of MOSAIC is to develop visions and illustrative scenarios for future collaborative workspaces involving mobile and location-aware working. Analysis of the scenarios is input to the process of road mapping with the purpose of developing strategies for R&D leading to deployment of innovative mobile work technologies and applications across different domains. This paper relates to one specific domain, that of Health and Wellbeing. The focus is therefore is on mobile working environments which enable mobile collaborative working related to the domain of healthcare and wellbeing services for citizens. This paper reports the work of MOSAIC T2.2 on the vision and scenarios for mobile collaborative work related to this domain. This work was also an input to the activity of developing the MOSAIC roadmap for future research and development targeted at realization of the future Health and Wellbeing vision. The MOSAIC validation process for the Health and Wellbeing scenarios is described and one scenario – the Major Incident Scenario - is presented in detail

    Assistive trajectories for human-in-the-loop mobile robotic platforms

    Autonomous and semi-autonomous smoothly interruptible trajectories are developed which are highly suitable for application in tele-operated mobile robots, operator on-board military mobile ground platforms, and other mobility assistance platforms. These trajectories will allow a navigational system to provide assistance to the operator in the loop, for purpose built robots or remotely operated platforms. This will allow the platform to function well beyond the line-of-sight of the operator, enabling remote operation inside a building, surveillance, or advanced observations whilst keeping the operator in a safe location. In addition, on-board operators can be assisted to navigate without collision when distracted, or under-fire, or when physically disabled by injury

    Utilization Of A Large-Scale Wireless Sensor Network For Intrusion Detection And Border Surveillance

    To control the border more effectively, countries may deploy a detection system that enables real-time surveillance of border integrity. Events such as border crossings need to be monitored in real time so that any border entries can be noted by border security forces and destinations marked for apprehension. Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) are promising for border security surveillance because they enable enforcement teams to monitor events in the physical environment. In this work, probabilistic models have been presented to investigate senor development schemes while considering the environmental factors that affect the sensor performance. Simulation studies have been carried out using the OPNET to verify the theoretical analysis and to find an optimal node deployment scheme that is robust and efficient by incorporating geographical coordination in the design. Measures such as adding camera and range-extended antenna to each node have been investigated to improve the system performance. A prototype WSN based surveillance system has been developed to verify the proposed approach

    Ship Detection and Segmentation using Image Correlation

    There have been intensive research interests in ship detection and segmentation due to high demands on a wide range of civil applications in the last two decades. However, existing approaches, which are mainly based on statistical properties of images, fail to detect smaller ships and boats. Specifically, known techniques are not robust enough in view of inevitable small geometric and photometric changes in images consisting of ships. In this paper a novel approach for ship detection is proposed based on correlation of maritime images. The idea comes from the observation that a fine pattern of the sea surface changes considerably from time to time whereas the ship appearance basically keeps unchanged. We want to examine whether the images have a common unaltered part, a ship in this case. To this end, we developed a method - Focused Correlation (FC) to achieve robustness to geometric distortions of the image content.     Joint Routing and STDMA-based Scheduling to Minimize Delays in Grid Wireless Sensor Networks

    In this report, we study the issue of delay optimization and energy efficiency in grid wireless sensor networks (WSNs). We focus on STDMA (Spatial Reuse TDMA)) scheduling, where a predefined cycle is repeated, and where each node has fixed transmission opportunities during specific slots (defined by colors). We assume a STDMA algorithm that takes advantage of the regularity of grid topology to also provide a spatially periodic coloring ("tiling" of the same color pattern). In this setting, the key challenges are: 1) minimizing the average routing delay by ordering the slots in the cycle 2) being energy efficient. Our work follows two directions: first, the baseline performance is evaluated when nothing specific is done and the colors are randomly ordered in the STDMA cycle. Then, we propose a solution, ORCHID that deliberately constructs an efficient STDMA schedule. It proceeds in two steps. In the first step, ORCHID starts form a colored grid and builds a hierarchical routing based on these colors. In the second step, ORCHID builds a color ordering, by considering jointly both routing and scheduling so as to ensure that any node will reach a sink in a single STDMA cycle. We study the performance of these solutions by means of simulations and modeling. Results show the excellent performance of ORCHID in terms of delays and energy compared to a shortest path routing that uses the delay as a heuristic. We also present the adaptation of ORCHID to general networks under the SINR interference model

    A wireless sensor network system for border security and crossing detection

    The protection of long stretches of countries’ borders has posed a number of challenges. Effective and continuous monitoring of a border requires the implementation of multi-surveillance technologies, such as Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN), that work as an integrated unit to meet the desired goals. The research presented in this thesis investigates the application of topologically Linear WSN (LWSNs) to international border monitoring and surveillance. The main research questions studied here are: What is the best form of node deployment and hierarchy? What is the minimum number of sensor nodes to achieve k− barrier coverage in a given belt region? iven an appropriate network density, how do we determine if a region is indeed k−barrier covered? What are the factors that affect barrier coverage? How to organise nodes into logical segments to perform in-network processing of data? How to transfer information from the networks to the end users while maintaining critical QoS measures such as timeliness and accuracy. To address these questions, we propose an architecture that specifies a mechanism to assign nodes to various network levels depending on their location. These levels are used by a cross-layer communication protocol to achieve data delivery at the lowest possible cost and minimal delivery delay. Building on this levelled architecture, we study the formation of weak and strong barriers and how they determine border crossing detection probability. We propose new method to calculate the required node density to provide higher intruder detection rate. Then, we study the effect of people movement models on the border crossing detection probability. At the data link layer, new energy balancing along with shifted MAC protocol are introduced to further increase the network lifetime and delivery speed. In addition, at network layer, a routing protocol called Level Division raph (LD ) is developed. LD utilises a complex link cost measurement to insure best QoS data delivery to the sink node at the lowest possible cost. The proposed system has the ability to work independently or cooperatively with other monitoring technologies, such as drowns and mobile monitoring stations. The performance of the proposed work is extensively evaluated analytically and in simulation using real-life conditions and parameters. The simulation results show significant performance gains when comparing LD to its best rivals in the literature Dynamic Source Routing. Compared to DSR, LD achieves higher performance in terms of average end-to-end delays by up to 95%, packet delivery ratio by up to 20%, and throughput by up to 60%, while maintaining similar performance in terms of normalised routing load and energy consumption
