    Representation and application of spline-based finite elements

    Isogeometric analysis, as a generalization of the finite element method, employs spline methods to achieve the same representation for both geometric modeling and analysis purpose. Being one of possible tool in application to the isogeometric analysis, blending techniques provide strict locality and smoothness between elements. Motivated by these features, this thesis is devoted to the design and implementation of this alternative type of finite elements. This thesis combines topics in geometry, computer science and engineering. The research is mainly focused on the algorithmic aspects of the usage of the spline-based finite elements in the context of developing generalized methods for solving different model problems. The ability for conversion between different representations is significant for the modeling purpose. Methods for conversion between local and global representations are presented

    Animation in relational information visualization

    In order to be able to navigate in the world without memorizing each detail, the human brain builds a mental map of its environment. The mental map is a distorted and abstracted representation of the real environment. Unimportant areas tend to be collapsed to a single entity while important landmarks are overemphasized. When working with visualizations of data we build a mental map of the data which is closely linked to the particular visualization. If the visualization changes significantly due to changes in the data or the way it is presented we loose the mental map and have to rebuild it from scratch. The purpose of the research underlying this thesis was to investigate and devise methods to create smooth transformations between visualizations of relational data which help users in maintaining or quickly updating their mental map

    Designing aesthetically pleasing freeform surfaces in a computer environment

D.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Architecture, February 2001.Includes bibliographical references (p. 151-160).Statement: If computational tools are to be employed in the aesthetic design of freeform surfaces, these tools must better reflect the ways in which creative designers conceive of and develop such shapes. In this thesis, I studied the design of aesthetically constrained freeform surfaces in architecture and industrial design, formulated a requirements list for a computational system that would aid in the creative design of such surfaces, and implemented a subset of the tools that would comprise such a system. This work documents the clay modeling process at BMW AG., Munich. The study of that process has led to a list of tools that would make freeform surface modeling possible in a computer environment. And finally, three tools from this system specification have been developed into a proof-of-concept system. Two of these tools are sweep modification tools and the third allows a user to modify a surface by sketching a shading pattern desired for the surface. The proof-of-concept tools were necessary in order to test the validity of the tools being presented and they have been used to create a number of example objects. The underlying surface representation is a variational expression which is minimized using the finite element method over an irregular triangulated mesh.by Evan P. Smyth.Ph.D
