Knowledge is a human resource which has the ability to consolidate the valuable results of human thinking and civilization through different times. It is the totality of understanding of nature and its features for improved quality of life of human society. Because of this, knowledge has been increasing in volume, dimension and directions. The term ‘information’ and 'knowledge' are often used as if they are interchangeable. Information is ‘potential knowledge‘ which is converted into knowledge by the integration of memory of human beings. In modern times there is a confusion on knowledge usage. Therefore an understanding of the concept ‘knowledge’ is needed for formulation of strategies in information science

Advanced Process Monitoring for Industry 4.0

    Get PDF
This book reports recent advances on Process Monitoring (PM) to cope with the many challenges raised by the new production systems, sensors and “extreme data” conditions that emerged with Industry 4.0. Concepts such as digital-twins and deep learning are brought to the PM arena, pushing forward the capabilities of existing methodologies to handle more complex scenarios. The evolution of classical paradigms such as Latent Variable modeling, Six Sigma and FMEA are also covered. Applications span a wide range of domains such as microelectronics, semiconductors, chemicals, materials, agriculture, as well as the monitoring of rotating equipment, combustion systems and membrane separation processes

    PhD students´day FMST 2023

The authors gave oral presentations of their work online as part of a Doctoral Students’ Day held on 15 June 2023, and they reflect the challenging work done by the students and their supervisors in the fields of metallurgy, materials engineering and management. There are 82 contributions in total, covering a range of areas – metallurgical technology, thermal engineering and fuels in industry, chemical metallurgy, nanotechnology, materials science and engineering, and industrial systems management. This represents a cross-section of the diverse topics investigated by doctoral students at the faculty, and it will provide a guide for Master’s graduates in these or similar disciplines who are interested in pursuing their scientific careers further, whether they are from the faculty here in Ostrava or engineering faculties elsewhere in the Czech Republic. The quality of the contributions varies: some are of average quality, but many reach a standard comparable with research articles published in established journals focusing on disciplines of materials technology. The diversity of topics, and in some cases the excellence of the contributions, with logical structure and clearly formulated conclusions, reflect the high standard of the doctoral programme at the faculty.Ostrav

Synthesis of nanocomposites of difference architectures and applications based on copper, nickel and alumina

Considering that nanostructural materials are expected to have special physical and mechanical properties, in the recent years the examinations of synthesis and characterization of the nanocomposite system attracts even greater scientific interest. This paper presents production of sintered contacts materials produced from nanocomposite powders obtained by combination of thermochemical synthesis of Cu-Al2O3 powder and mechanical alloying of atomized copper powder with previously sinthetized Cu-Al2O3 powder. Produced powders were characterized by X-ray diffraction and Analytical Electron Microscopy. Characterization of sintered samples included Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Energy Dispersive Spectrometry (EDS), measurement of hardness and specific electrical conductivity. By thermochemical method of Cu-Al2O3 nanocomposite synthesis, i.e. deposition from aqueous solutions, in combination with mechanical alloying, significant effects of reinforcement were achieved as a result of homogenous distribution of alumina in the nanocomposite system. In combination with conventional methods, thermochemical process of nanocomposite powders synthesis could be successfully applied for synthesis of new nanocomposite catalysts, which are characterized by a high degree of dispersion of the catalytically active component, respectively the catalyst with high activity and selectivity. The high degree of dispersion is the result of uniform distribution of the catalytically active component into alumina suspension, realized during the thermochemical treatment in the synthesis of nanocomposite catalysts. In accordance with this, the paper shows the synthesis of Ni/Al2O3 and Ni-Pd/Al2O3 nanocomposite catalysts with homogeneously dispersed Ni particles, as catalytically active component, and Pd, as activity modifier, supported on ceramic Al2O3 based foam. Namely, the previous synthesized monolith was soaked in a mixed alumina suspension with NiCl2, PdCl2 and appropriate organic additives in order to obtain a nanocomposite catalysts with homogeneous distribution of catalytically active components. Characterization of obtained Al2O3 foam, as the active catalytic components primary carrier, and synthesized nanocomposite catalysts included SEM, EDS, gas permeability and mechanical properties. Synthesis of nanocomposite materials with homogeneous distribution of particles on the nanometer level may lead to formation of new materials with improved or even unexpected properties

These proceedings contain research papers that were accepted for presentation at the 14th International Conference Inter-Eng 2020 ,Interdisciplinarity in Engineering, which was held on 8–9 October 2020, in Târgu Mureș, Romania. It is a leading international professional and scientific forum for engineers and scientists to present research works, contributions, and recent developments, as well as current practices in engineering, which is falling into a tradition of important scientific events occurring at Faculty of Engineering and Information Technology in the George Emil Palade University of Medicine, Pharmacy Science, and Technology of Târgu Mures, Romania. The Inter-Eng conference started from the observation that in the 21st century, the era of high technology, without new approaches in research, we cannot speak of a harmonious society. The theme of the conference, proposing a new approach related to Industry 4.0, was the development of a new generation of smart factories based on the manufacturing and assembly process digitalization, related to advanced manufacturing technology, lean manufacturing, sustainable manufacturing, additive manufacturing, and manufacturing tools and equipment. The conference slogan was “Europe’s future is digital: a broad vision of the Industry 4.0 concept beyond direct manufacturing in the company”

Increasing Sustainability in Buildings Through Energy-Efficient Concrete

    Get PDF
The energy performance of buildings is influenced by a wide range of climatic and design-related variables, including but not limited to ambient temperature, heating and cooling systems, and thermal properties of building elements. This thesis explored the magnitude of the impact of the thermal properties of concrete compared to other influential factors and assessed their critical role in the energy performance of buildings. To this end, several approaches have been employed to improve the thermal performance of concrete, such as partial to full replacement of cement and natural aggregates with supplementary cementitious materials and recycled concrete aggregates, respectively, resulting in the production of lightweight concrete. However, incorporating recycled contents into concrete mixes beyond certain percentages can negatively impact the mechanical performance of concrete, which poses a challenge for engineers and designers balancing thermal, environmental, and mechanical performances. With the goal of spanning the mentioned requirements, this thesis proposed an AI-assisted framework integrating data-driven modelling techniques and multi-objective optimisation algorithms to optimise recycled aggregate concrete mixes targeting energy performance-related and economic objectives without compromising their mechanical strength. In this sense, incorporating recycled contents and air bubbles into concrete mixes was found to be an effective approach to address some hurdles associated with concrete 3D printing, which is a promising technique for large-scale construction projects due to its speed and cost-efficiency. The results showed that increasing air voids allowed for replacing recycled content beyond commonly used percentages, resulting in lightweight and ultra-lightweight 3D printable cementitious composites with significant thermal conductivity improvements
