    Behavior Trees for UAV Mission Management

    Behavior trees are a recent development in artificial intelligence for computer games. Their application has been proposed to increase modularity of an unmanned aerial vehicle's control system. This paper first describes advantages of behavior trees for use in mission management. The paper then points out research towards their deployment. Finally, newly developed transient tasks are introduced to behavior trees. These allow for finite-state-machine-like initialization and interruption of tasks. The use of the system is demonstrated with an unmanned aircraft mission simulation

    Onboard Mission- and Contingency Management based on Behavior Trees for Unmanned Aerial Vehicles

    Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) have gained significant attention for their potential in various sectors, including surveillance, logistics, and disaster management. This thesis focuses on developing a novel onboard mission and contingency management system based on Behavior Trees for UAVs. The study aims to assert if behavior trees can be effectively applied to this domain and how they perform with respect to other modelling architectures. Furthermore, this document explores which tree structures are more efficient, good-design practices and behavior tree limitations. Overall, this thesis addresses the challenge of autonomous onboard decision-making of UAVs in complex and dynamic environments, particularly in the context of delivery missions in off-shore wind farms. The developed architecture is tested in a simulated environment. The research integrates a Skill Manager, a Mission Planner, and a Mission and Contingency Manager. The architecture leverages Behavior Trees to facilitate both mission execution and contingency management. The thesis also presents a quantitative analysis of key performance indicators, providing a comparative evaluation against traditional architectures like Finite State Machines. The results indicate that the proposed system is efficient in mission execution and effective in handling contingencies. This study offers a comprehensive structure targeting onboard planning, contingency management and concurrent actions execution. It also presents a quantitative analysis of Behavior Trees' performance in UAV mission execution and reactivity to contingent situations. It contributes to the ongoing discourse on UAV autonomy, offering insights beneficial for the broader deployment of UAVs in various industrial applications

    Using a Multiobjective Approach to Balance Mission and Network Goals within a Delay Tolerant Network Topology

    This thesis investigates how to incorporate aspects of an Air Tasking Order (ATO), a Communications Tasking Order (CTO), and a Network Tasking Order (NTO) within a cognitive network framework. This was done in an effort to aid the commander and or network operator by providing automation for battlespace management to improve response time and potential inconsistent problem resolution. In particular, autonomous weapon systems such as unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) were the focus of this research This work implemented a simple cognitive process by incorporating aspects of behavior based robotic control principles to solve the multi-objective optimization problem of balancing both network and mission goals. The cognitive process consisted of both a multi-move look ahead component, in which the future outcomes of decisions were estimated, and a subsumption decision making architecture in which these decision-outcome pairs were selected so they co-optimized the dual goals. This was tested within a novel Air force mission scenario consisting of a UAV surveillance mission within a delay tolerant network (DTN) topology. This scenario used a team of small scale UAVs (operating as a team but each running the cognitive process independently) to balance the mission goal of maintaining maximum overall UAV time-on-target and the network goal of minimizing the packet end-to-end delays experienced within the DTN. The testing was accomplished within a MATLAB discrete event simulation. The results indicated that this proposed approach could successfully simultaneously improve both goals as the network goal improved 52% and the mission goal improved by approximately 6%

    Model based safety analysis for an Unmanned Aerial System

    This paper aims at describing safety architectures of autonomous systems by using Event-B formal method. The autonomous systems combine various activities which can be organised in layers. The Event-B formalism well supports the rigorous design of this kind of systems. Its refinement mechanism allows a progressive modelling by checking the correctness and the relevance of the models by discharging proof obligations. The application of the Event-B method within the framework of layered architecture specification enables the emergence of desired global properties with relation to layer interactions. The safety objectives are derived in each layer and they involve static and dynamic properties such as an independence property, a redundant property or a sequential property. The originality of our approach is to consider a refinement process between two layers in which the abstract model is the model of the lower layer. In our modelling, we distinguish nominal behaviour and abnormal behaviour in order to well establish failure propagation in our architecture

    Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) in environmental biology: A Review

    Acquiring information about the environment is a key step during each study in the field of environmental biology at different levels, from an individual species to community and biome. However, obtaining information about the environment is frequently difficult because of, for example, the phenological timing, spatial distribution of a species or limited accessibility of a particular area for the field survey. Moreover, remote sensing technology, which enables the observation of the Earthā€™s surface and is currently very common in environmental research, has many limitations such as insufficient spatial, spectral and temporal resolution and a high cost of data acquisition. Since the 1990s, researchers have been exploring the potential of different types of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) for monitoring Earthā€™s surface. The present study reviews recent scientific literature dealing with the use of UAV in environmental biology. Amongst numerous papers, short communications and conference abstracts, we selected 110 original studies of how UAVs can be used in environmental biology and which organisms can be studied in this manner. Most of these studies concerned the use of UAV to measure the vegetation parameters such as crown height, volume, number of individuals (14 studies) and quantification of the spatio-temporal dynamics of vegetation changes (12 studies). UAVs were also frequently applied to count birds and mammals, especially those living in the water. Generally, the analytical part of the present study was divided into following sections: (1) detecting, assessing and predicting threats on vegetation, (2) measuring the biophysical parameters of vegetation, (3) quantifying the dynamics of changes in plants and habitats and (4) population and behaviour studies of animals. At the end, we also synthesised all the information showing, amongst others, the advances in environmental biology because of UAV application. Considering that 33% of studies found and included in this review were published in 2017 and 2018, it is expected that the number and variety of applications of UAVs in environmental biology will increase in the future
