    Development of new fault detection methods for rotating machines (roller bearings)

    Abstract Early fault diagnosis of roller bearings is extremely important for rotating machines, especially for high speed, automatic and precise machines. Many research efforts have been focused on fault diagnosis and detection of roller bearings, since they constitute one the most important elements of rotating machinery. In this study a combination method is proposed for early damage detection of roller bearing. Wavelet packet transform (WPT) is applied to the collected data for denoising and the resulting clean data are break-down into some elementary components called Intrinsic mode functions (IMFs) using Ensemble empirical mode decomposition (EEMD) method. The normalized energy of three first IMFs are used as input for Support vector machine (SVM) to recognize whether signals are sorting out from healthy or faulty bearings. Then, since there is no robust guide to determine amplitude of added noise in EEMD technique, a new Performance improved EEMD (PIEEMD) is proposed to determine the appropriate value of added noise. A novel feature extraction method is also proposed for detecting small size defect using Teager-Kaiser energy operator (TKEO). TKEO is applied to IMFs obtained to create new feature vectors as input data for one-class SVM. The results of applying the method to acceleration signals collected from an experimental bearing test rig demonstrated that the method can be successfully used for early damage detection of roller bearings. Most of the diagnostic methods that have been developed up to now can be applied for the case stationary working conditions only (constant speed and load). However, bearings often work at time-varying conditions such as wind turbine supporting bearings, mining excavator bearings, vehicles, robots and all processes with run-up and run-down transients. Damage identification for bearings working under non-stationary operating conditions, especially for early/small defects, requires the use of appropriate techniques, which are generally different from those used for the case of stationary conditions, in order to extract fault-sensitive features which are at the same time insensitive to operational condition variations. Some methods have been proposed for damage detection of bearings working under time-varying speed conditions. However, their application might increase the instrumentation cost because of providing a phase reference signal. Furthermore, some methods such as order tracking methods still can be applied when the speed variation is limited. In this study, a novel combined method based on cointegration is proposed for the development of fault features which are sensitive to the presence of defects while in the same time they are insensitive to changes in the operational conditions. It does not require any additional measurements and can identify defects even for considerable speed variations. The signals acquired during run-up condition are decomposed into IMFs using the performance improved EEMD method. Then, the cointegration method is applied to the intrinsic mode functions to extract stationary residuals. The feature vectors are created by applying the Teager-Kaiser energy operator to the obtained stationary residuals. Finally, the feature vectors of the healthy bearing signals are utilized to construct a separating hyperplane using one-class support vector machine. Eventually the proposed method was applied to vibration signals measured on an experimental bearing test rig. The results verified that the method can successfully distinguish between healthy and faulty bearings even if the shaft speed changes dramatically

    Rolling Bearing Fault Diagnosis Based on EMD-TEO and Mahalanobis Distance

    A intelligent rolling bearing fault diagnosis method is proposed on Empirical Mode Decomposition (EMD) – Teager Energy Operator (TEO) and Mahalanobis distance. EMD can adaptively decompose vibration signal into a series of Intrinsic Mode Functions (IMFs), that is, zero mean mono-component AM-FM signal. TEO can estimate the total mechanical energy required to generate signals, so it has good time resolution and self-adaptive ability to the transient of the signal, which shows the advantage to detect the signal impact characteristics. With regards to the impulse feature of the bearing fault vibration signals, TEO can be used to detect cyclical impulse characteristic caused by bearing failure, gain the instantaneous amplitude spectrum of each IMF component, then identify the characteristic frequency of the interesting and single IMF component in bearing faults by means of Teager energy spectrum. The amplitude of the Teager energy spectrum in inner race fault frequency, outer fault frequency and the ratio of the energy of the resonance frequency to the total energy were extracted as the feature vectors, which were used as training samples and test samples separately for fault diagnosis. Then the Mahalanobis distances between the real measure and different type overalls of fault sample are calculated to classify the real condition of rolling bearing. Experimental results was concluded that this method can accurately identify and diagnose different fault types of rolling bearing

    Rolling Bearing Fault Detection Based on the Teager Energy Operator and Elman Neural Network

    This paper presents an approach to bearing fault diagnosis based on the Teager energy operator (TEO) and Elman neural network. The TEO can estimate the total mechanical energy required to generate signals, thereby resulting in good time resolution and self-adaptability to transient signals. These attributes reflect the advantage of detecting signal impact characteristics. To detect the impact characteristics of the vibration signals of bearing faults, we used the TEO to extract the cyclical impact caused by bearing failure and applied the wavelet packet to reduce the noise of the Teager energy signal. This approach also enabled the extraction of bearing fault feature frequencies, which were identified using the fast Fourier transform of Teager energy. The feature frequencies of the inner and outer faults, as well as the ratio of resonance frequency band energy to total energy in the Teager spectrum, were extracted as feature vectors. In order to avoid a frequency leak error, the weighted Teager spectrum around the fault frequency was extracted as feature vector. These vectors were then used to train the Elman neural network and improve the robustness of the diagnostic algorithm. Experimental results indicate that the proposed approach effectively detects bearing faults under variable conditions

    In this paper, a rolling bearing fault detection method based on Local Characteristic-scale Decomposition (LCD) and Teager Energy operator (TEO) is proposed. Vibration signals is related to the bearing fault. However, the vibration signal of rolling bearing is nonlinear and has multiple components, which makes it difficult to analyze the signals by using traditional method such as the fast Fourier transform (FFT). LCD, a recently developed signal decomposition method, is especially capable for dealing with the complex signal by decomposing it into several intrinsic scale components (ISC). Furthermore, to extract fault diagnosis of the components, we used TEO to demodulate each ISC. The energy of fault feature frequencies was extracted as fault vector. The result shows that the method successfully diagnoses bearing fault

    A novel feature extraction for anomaly detection of roller bearings based on performance improved Ensemble Empirical Mode Decomposition and Teager-Kaiser energy operator

    Although Ensemble empirical mode decomposition (EEMD) method has been successfully applied to various applications, features extracted using EEMD could not detect anomalies for roller bearings, especially when anomalies includes small defects. In this study a novel feature extraction method is proposed to detect the state of roller bearings. Performance improved EEMD, which is a reliable adaptive method to calculate an appropriate noise amplitude is applied to decompose the acceleration signals into zer0-mean components called intrinsic mode functions (IMFs). Then, three dimensional feature vectors are created by applying the Teager-Kaiser energy operator (TKEO) to the first three IMFs. The novel features obtained from the healthy bearing signals are utilized to construct the separating hyperplane using one-class support vector machine (SVM). In order to validate the method proposed, a number of operating conditions (shaft speed and load) are considered to generate the data (vibration signals) by means of an assembled test rig. It is shown that the proposed method can successfully identify the states of the new samples (healthy and faulty). The uncertainty of the model prediction is investigated computing Margin and the number of support vectors. It create less complex (less fraction of support vectors) and more reliable (higher Margin) hyperplane than the EEMD method

    Teager energy enhancement base on polar coordinates at angular domain and feature extraction of bearing’s early fault

    Unstable signal under variable rotation speed condition can expose bearing’s weak fault feature more obviously, a method of Teager energy enhancement base on polar coordinates at angular domain (TEEPAD) is proposed in this paper to analyze the unstable signal and extract single or concurrent fault of bearing’s early failure. Firstly, order analysis is selected to resample the unstable signal in time domain to stationary signal in angular domain, then Teager energy operator of stationary signal in angular domain is calculated and projected on the polar coordinates plane to enhance the fault feature. Analysis result of actual signal shows that single or concurrent fault feature of bearing’s early failure is effectively extracted by TEEPAD, and the other components having different periods or random noise are restrained synchronously

    International audienceOver the past several decades, induction machine condition monitoring have received increasing attention from researchers and engineers. Several induction machine faults detection techniques have been proposed that are based on vibration, temperature, and currents/power monitoring, etc. Motor current signature analysis is a cost-effective method, which has been widely investigated. Specifically, it has been demonstrated that mechanical and electrical induction machine faults can be effectively diagnosed using stator currents demodulation. Therefore, this paper proposes to investigate the use of demodulation techniques for bearing faults detection and diagnosis based on stator currents analysis. If stator currents are assumed to be mono-component signals, the demodulation techniques include the synchronous demodulator, the Hilbert transform, the Teager energy operator, the Concordia transform, the maximum likelihood approach and the principal component analysis. For a multi-component signal, further preprocessing techniques are required such as the Empirical Mode Decomposition (EMD) or the Ensemble EMD (EEMD). The studied demodulation techniques are demonstrated for bearing faults diagnosis using simulation data, issued from a coupled electromagnetic circuits approach-based simulation tool, and experiments on a 0.75kW induction machine test bed

    An improved higher-order analytical energy operator with adaptive local iterative filtering for early fault diagnosis of bearings

    Early fault diagnosis in rolling bearings is crucial to maintenance and safety in industry. To highlight the weak fault features from complex signals combined with multiple interferences and heavy background noise, a novel approach for bearing fault diagnosis based on higher-order analytic energy operator (HO-AEO) and adaptive local iterative filtering (ALIF) is put forward. HO-AEO has better effect in dealing with heavy noise. However, it is subjected to the limitation of mono-components. To solve this limitation, ALIF is adopted firstly to decompose the nonlinear, non-stationary signals into multiple mono-components adaptively. In the next, the resonance frequency band as the optimal intrinsic mode function (IMF) is selected according to the maximum kurtosis. In the following, HO-AEO is utilized to highlight weak fault characteristics of the selected IMF. Finally, the early bearing fault is diagnosed by the energy operator spectrum based on fast Fourier transform (FFT). Comparisons in the simulation indicate that the fourth order HO-AEO shows the best performance in fault diagnosis compared with Teager energy operator (TEO), analytic energy operator (AEO), the second and the third order HO-AEO. The simulated test and experimental results demonstrate that the proposed approach could effectively extract weak fault characteristics from contaminated vibration signals

    Bearing fault diagnosis based on TEO and SVM

    A fault method for bearing based on Teager energy operator (TEO) and support vector machine (SVM) is proposed in this paper. First, the total energy of the vibration signal of the bearing is estimated by the TEO technique, which has good time resolution for the instantaneous signal. Then, the Teager spectrums are obtained by applying fast Fourier transform (FFT) to the Teager energy signal. The feature frequencies of different fault modes, as well as the ratio of resonance frequency band energy to total energy in the Teager spectrum are extracted to form the feature vectors. Finally, these vectors are introduced into SVM to realize fault classification for the bearing. Experiments are conducted to verify the feasibility of the proposed method, the results show that the proposed method performs effectively to identify the failure mode of the bearing under variable conditions
