Mixtures of modern and historical wheat cultivars under organic management in western Canada
Two historic (Red Fife and Marquis) and two modern (5602HR; AC Barrie) wheat (Triticum aestivum) cultivars were assessed to determine if cultivar mixtures provided a benefit to grain yield and disease and weed suppression in Manitoba over 3 site-years. 5602HR was the highest yielding sole cultivar while Marquis and AC Barrie were the lowest yielding sole cultivars. Red Fife yielded similar to 5602HR in several cases. Orthogonal contrasts across all site-years showed that 3 and 4 cultivar mixtures yielded similar (P>0.05) to 5602HR, the highest yielding monocrop

Think Happy Thoughts : Peter Pan as a Tragic Hero
Using Aristotle\u27s definition of the tragic hero, this work will explore J.M. Barrie\u27s novel, Peter and Wendy, and how Peter is a tragic figure. In this paper I argue that Peter Pan is not only a tragic hero whose human frailty— in Peter’s case, his fear of growing old— causes him to make the terrible mistake of rejecting his own development of humanity and the opportunity for redemption through maternal love, but that Barrie uses Peter to emphasize that, contrary to the Romantic conception of childhood, children need the guidance of parents in order to live a fulfilling life

Exoplanets - search methods, discoveries, and prospects for astrobiology
Whereas the Solar System has Mars and Europa as the best candidates for
finding fossil/extant life as we know it - based on complex carbon compounds
and liquid water - the 263 (non-pulsar) planetary systems around other stars as
known at 15 September 2008 could between them possess many more planets where
life might exist. Moreover, the number of these exoplanetary systems is growing
steadily, and with this growth there is an increase in the number of planets
that could bear carbon-liquid water life. In this brief review the main methods
by which exoplanets are being discovered are outlined, and then the discoveries
that have so far been made are presented. Habitability is then discussed, and
an outline presented of how a planet could be studied from afar to determine
whether it is habitable, and whether it is indeed inhabited. This review is
aimed at the astrobiology community, which spans many disciplines, few of which
involve exoplanets. It is therefore at a basic level and concentrates on the
major topics.Comment: 37 pages, 12 Figure
Melding Identities : The Kailyard and Victorian Society in James Barrie's Peter and Wendy
This dissertation intends to reconcile the two identities of James Matthew Barrie, the Scottish writer and the English playwright, through the analysis of his novel Peter and Wendy (1911) and the tropes showcased in his Kailyard novels, such as A Window in Thrums (1889). This paper focuses on the treatment of landscape, motherhood as a performative role in the instruction of the child, communities defined by censorship and the subtle appearances of the New Woman. These elements allow to find the correlation between past and present influences, which aims to unify the two identities James M. Barrie embodies.
