    Adaptive Engineering of an Embedded System, Engineered for use by Search and Rescue Canines

    In Urban Search and Rescue (US&R) operations, canine teams are deployed to find live patients, and save lives. US&R may benefit from increased levels of situational awareness, through information made available through the use of embedded systems attached to the dogs. One of these is the Canine Pose Estimation (CPE) system. There are many challenges faced with such embedded systems including the engineering of such devices for use in disaster environments. Durability and wireless connectivity in areas with materials that inhibit wireless communications, the safety of the dog wearing the devices, and form factor must be accommodated. All of these factors must be weighed without compromising the accuracy of the application and the timely delivery of its data. This paper discusses the adaptive engineering process and how each of the unique challenges of emergency response embedded systems can be defined and overcome through effective design methods

    La investigación desarrollada en esta Tesis Doctoral se centró en realizar contribuciones en el ámbito del análisis clínico a través de estrategias metabolómicas tanto orientadas como globales en diferentes tipos de muestras biológicas mediante cromatografía de líquidos (LC) y espectrometría de masas (MS). Para ello primeramente se revisó exhaustiva y críticamente la bibliografía para conocer el estado del tratamiento de la orina como muestra y de los métodos de análisis de aire exhalado condensado, dos de los biofluidos utilizados en el desarrollo de esta Tesis. Además, se optimizaron métodos de análisis orientado para mejorar la cuantificación tanto de compuestos con potencial biomarcador como de fármacos y sus metabolitos para su aplicación en el diagnóstico y seguimiento de enfermedades o tratamientos. También se analizaron de forma global biofluidos para, (a) estudiar y optimizar el tratamiento de una muestra escasamente utilizada en el área clínica (el aire exhalado condensado –EBC), (b) identificar metabolitos con potencial predictivo para ayudar en el diagnóstico del cáncer de próstata utilizando la orina como muestra, y (c) mejorar y acelerar el tratamiento de datos a través de herramientas quimiométricas desarrolladas para combinar en una única matriz los datos obtenidos mediante ionización positiva y negativa en espectrometría de masas

    Development of A Versatile Multichannel CWNIRS Instrument for Optical Brain-Computer Interface Applications

    This thesis describes the design, development, and implementation of a versatile multichannel continuous-wave near-infrared spectroscopy (CWNIRS) instrument for brain-computer interface (BCI) applications. Specifically, it was of interest to assess what gains could be achieved by using a multichannel device compared to the single channel device implemented by Coyle in 2004. Moreover, the multichannel approach allows for the assessment of localisation of functional tasks in the cerebral cortex, and can identify lateralisation of haemodynamic responses to motor events. The approach taken to extend single channel to multichannel was based on a software-controlled interface. This interface allowed flexibility in the control of individual optodes including their synchronisation and modulation (AM, TDM, CDMA). Furthermore, an LED driver was developed for custom-made triple-wavelength LEDs. The system was commissioned using a series of experiments to verify the performance of individual components in the system. The system was then used to carry out a set of functional studies including motor imagery and cognitive tasks. The experimental protocols based on motor imagery and overt motor tasks were verified by comparison with fMRI. The multichannel approach identified stroke rehabilitation as a new application area for optical BCI. In addition, concentration changes in deoxyhaemoglobin were identified as being a more localised indicator of functional activity, which is important for effective BCI design. An assessment was made on the effect of the duration of the stimulus period on the haemodynamic signals. This demonstrated the possible benefits of using a shorter stimulus period to reduce the adverse affects of low blood pressure oscillations. i
