Organization of Cargo Traffic Using Ferry Connections

    Get PDF
The observed development of ferry transport in the Baltic Sea is associated with the development of trade exchange between the countries of this region. Cargo transportation constitutes a significant part of these carriages. Disturbances in the organization and implementation of transport chains with the participation of ferry shipping may cause delays in the delivery of cargo to customers. Therefore, it is reasonable to look for solutions to streamline the organization of these processes. The aim of the article is to identify the current state and to analyze the organization of the process of cargo transportation with the use of ferry shipping. The ferry line connecting the ports of Liepaja (Latvia) and TravemĂŒnde (Germany) was considered in details. On the basis of surveys carried out among truck drivers and owners of transport companies on the ways of transport organization, the selected aspects related to the planning of the transport process with the use of ferry shipping were determined. As a result of the analysis of the data obtained, recommendations were made to improve the organization of cargo transportation in ferry shipping

European islands, development and the cohesion policy : a case study of Kokar, Aland islands

A European Union initiative is seeking ways of determining the development potential of Europe’s lagging regions, which include various islands. On the basis of the policy review, methodology and data collected by the ongoing EUROISLANDS project, this paper presents Kökar (population: 262), the easternmost municipality of the Åland Islands, as a prototype archipelago that is seriously challenged by its size and multiple peripherality. It reviews the state of its social and transportation infrastructure, and of its human and financial capital. While the situation is serious, there are opportunities for branding, for developing associated economic activity, as well for appealing to a new wave of residents.peer-reviewe

Containerisation in the Baltic Sea region: development, characteristics and contemporary organisation

    Get PDF
The main focus of the paper is on the container system development in the Baltic Sea Region studying cotemporary changes and organisation, as well as explaining the main driving forces of this situation. The Baltic Sea is a transport corridor between Eastern and Western Europe. Over the last decade maritime transport in the Baltic Sea area has changed significantly. The disintegration of the Soviet Union forced Russia to start developing its own Baltic ports and terminals and to find new routes to export its oil and gas. The Baltic ports have welcomed a remarkable growth, especially in oil transportation and containerised flows. The geographical configuration of the region naturally places it away from major global shipping lines. This situation is accentuated by the organisation of maritime regular lines, centred in Northern European ports. For this reason, the regional container network is mainly made up of feeder services

Polish ferry market is a prime segment of ferry industry in Baltic Sea Region. Services from Polish ports to Sweden play an important role in the carriage of wheeled cargo between Central Europe and Scandinavia. The increase in trade turnover affects the demand for ferry transport. The aim of the article is to analyze the selected determinants influencing the activity of carriers on Polish market. The paper focuses on cargo transportation, the passenger segment is not researched

A proposed framework for managing environmental causes and consequences of ocean traffic and ports

Paper presented at European Decision Sciences Institute (ED2016), 7th Annual Conference, 24th to 27th May 2016, Helsinki. Abstract The cumulative and in-combination effects of ocean shipping and port operations need addressing via a detailed, rigorous and holistic framework of risk assessment and risk management. This aims to protect the natural system while at the same time obtaining societal benefits from the seas. This paper proposes a conceptual framework that integrates both an ISO industry standard risk assessment and management framework (Bow-tie analysis) and the DAPSI(W)R(M) analysis supported by the ten-tenets criteria to provide guidance for all stakeholders, including industry and government, to address these issues. Water pollution stemming from maritime logistics and SCM are used to illustrate this framework

Exchange Rate Policy and Economic Growth after the Financial Crisis in Central and Eastern Europe

In a paper on the effects of the global financial crisis in Central and Eastern Europe (CEE), the author reacts to a paper of Åslund (2011) published in the same issue of Eurasian Geography and Economics on the influence of exchange rate policies on the region’s recovery. The author argues that post-crisis corrections in current account deficits in CEE countries do not in themselves signal a return to steady economic growth. Disagreeing with Åslund over the role of loose monetary policy in fostering the region’s economic problems, he outlines a number of competitiveness problems that remain to be addressed in the 10 new EU member states of CEE, along with improvements in framework conditions supporting future macroeconomic growth

An analysis of the current situation for Polish ferry operators in a transitional environment

    Get PDF
This paper begins with an analysis of the situation in Polish ferry shipping as it enters the new millennium and faces increasing tension caused by the extended process of transition. It goes on to present a SWOT analysis conducted amongst experts within the sector to identify the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats that face the sector. This reveals the severity of problems that exist and which in particular are faced by the state operator Polferries. Discussion then follows of the proposed strategy for the industry from the Polish government before looking at the role of price in particular. Finally conclusions are drawn from the analysis
