    The Metabolism and Growth of Web Forums

    We view web forums as virtual living organisms feeding on user's attention and investigate how these organisms grow at the expense of collective attention. We find that the "body mass" (PVPV) and "energy consumption" (UVUV) of the studied forums exhibits the allometric growth property, i.e., PVtUVtθPV_t \sim UV_t ^ \theta. This implies that within a forum, the network transporting attention flow between threads has a structure invariant of time, despite of the continuously changing of the nodes (threads) and edges (clickstreams). The observed time-invariant topology allows us to explain the dynamics of networks by the behavior of threads. In particular, we describe the clickstream dissipation on threads using the function DiTiγD_i \sim T_i ^ \gamma, in which TiT_i is the clickstreams to node ii and DiD_i is the clickstream dissipated from ii. It turns out that γ\gamma, an indicator for dissipation efficiency, is negatively correlated with θ\theta and 1/γ1/\gamma sets the lower boundary for θ\theta. Our findings have practical consequences. For example, θ\theta can be used as a measure of the "stickiness" of forums, because it quantifies the stable ability of forums to convert UVUV into PVPV, i.e., to remain users "lock-in" the forum. Meanwhile, the correlation between γ\gamma and θ\theta provides a convenient method to evaluate the `stickiness" of forums. Finally, we discuss an optimized "body mass" of forums at around 10510^5 that minimizes γ\gamma and maximizes θ\theta.Comment: 6 figure

    Creating a Relational Distributed Object Store

    In and of itself, data storage has apparent business utility. But when we can convert data to information, the utility of stored data increases dramatically. It is the layering of relation atop the data mass that is the engine for such conversion. Frank relation amongst discrete objects sporadically ingested is rare, making the process of synthesizing such relation all the more challenging, but the challenge must be met if we are ever to see an equivalent business value for unstructured data as we already have with structured data. This paper describes a novel construct, referred to as a relational distributed object store (RDOS), that seeks to solve the twin problems of how to persistently and reliably store petabytes of unstructured data while simultaneously creating and persisting relations amongst billions of objects.Comment: 12 pages, 5 figure

    Scalable architectures for platform-as-a-service clouds: performance and cost analysis

    Scalability is a significant feature of cloud computing, which ad-dresses to increase or decrease the capacities of allocated virtual resources at application, platform, database and infrastructure level on demand. We investigate scalable architecture solutions for cloud PaaS that allow services to utilize the resources dynamically and effectively without directly affecting users. We have implemented scalable architectures with different session state management solutions, deploying an online shopping cart application in a PaaS solution, and measuring the performance and cost under three server-side session state providers: Caching, SQL database and NoSQL database. A commercial solution with its supporting state management components has been used. Particularly when re-architecting software for the cloud, the trade-off between performance, scalability and cost implications needs to be discussed

    Growing through Platform Distinctiveness in Early Saturated Markets

    High-growth ambitions are typically vital in platform markets. Yet, it is increasingly clear that the time window to occupy a novel platform market before it becomes saturated is surprisingly short. To this end, a differentiation strategy based on distinctive positioning across markets is increasingly prominent for new entrants to be competitive in early saturated markets. In the literature, two types of such tactics figure: (i) platform bundling, which aims to replicate the functionality of incumbents as part of a multimarket bundle, and (ii) platform piggybacking, which aims to tap into the functionality of incumbents through boundary resources use. In this paper, we employ a fixed-effect time series modelling approach using data from Apple’s App Store to develop and test the influence of these two tactics on platform competition in terms of user base and user engagement in early saturated app markets. We contribute to a distinctiveness logic of platform competitiveness by leveraging the dualism of digital platforms as both markets and technological architectures

    Identity Projection Strategies for Non-Focal Actors in Digital Ecosystems

    In digital ecosystems, non-focal actors cannot survive without working on the identity of their apps. The identity expresses what the app is about to customers. However, it also projects an image of the role of the non-focal actor in the larger ecosystem. Such identity projection is relevant for managing the relationship with focal actors of the digital ecosystem. We outline and test three strategies for identity projection (identity conformity, identity differentiation, and identity refinement). Using panel data of social networking applications in the iOS appStore in China between 2014 and 2019, we investigate the influence of non-focal actors’ identity projection on their survival in digital ecosystems. Our result shows significantly increased app survival for those who actively pursue the identity projection strategies in three directions. Thus, we shed light on the role of platform identity in navigating platform competition in the digital age when participation across ecosystems becomes compulsory for every digital business

    A prototype for a conversational companion for reminiscing about images

Companions demonstrators can be seen at: http://www.dcs.shef.ac.uk/∼roberta/companions/Web/.This paper describes an initial prototype of the Companions project (www.companions-project.org): the Senior Companion (SC), designed to be a platform to display novel approaches to: (1) The use of Information Extraction (IE) techniques to extract the content of incoming dialogue utterances after an ASR phase. (2) The conversion of the input to RDF form to allow the generation of new facts from existing ones, under the control of a Dialogue Manager (DM), that also has access to stored knowledge and knowledge accessed in real time from the web, all in RDF form. (3) A DM expressed as a stack and network virtual machine that models mixed initiative in dialogue control. (4) A tuned dialogue act detector based on corpus evidence. The prototype platform was evaluated, and we describe this; it is also designed to support more extensive forms of emotion detection carried by both speech and lexical content, as well as extended forms of machine learning. We describe preliminary studies and results for these, in particular a novel approach to enabling reinforcement learning for open dialogue systems through the detection of emotion in the speech signal and its deployment as a form of a learned DM, at a higher level than the DM virtual machine and able to direct the SC’s responses to a more emotionally appropriate part of its repertoire. © 2010 Elsevier Ltd.     Capturing tactile properties of real surfaces for haptic reproduction

    Tactile feedback of an object’s surface enables us to discern its material properties and affordances. This understanding is used in digital fabrication processes by creating objects with high-resolution surface variations to influence a user’s tactile perception. As the design of such surface haptics commonly relies on knowledge from real-life experiences, it is unclear how to adapt this information for digital design methods. In this work, we investigate replicating the haptics of real materials. Using an existing process for capturing an object’s microgeometry, we digitize and reproduce the stable surface information of a set of 15 fabric samples. In a psychophysical experiment, we evaluate the tactile qualities of our set of original samples and their replicas. From our results, we see that direct reproduction of surface variations is able to influence different psychophysical dimensions of the tactile perception of surface textures. While the fabrication process did not preserve all properties, our approach underlines that replication of surface microgeometries benefits fabrication methods in terms of haptic perception by covering a large range of tactile variations. Moreover, by changing the surface structure of a single fabricated material, its material perception can be influenced. We conclude by proposing strategies for capturing and reproducing digitized textures to better resemble the perceived haptics of the originals
