Following constant complains by our schools on short falls in the supply of laboratory apparatus and even when available they are sub – standard, this study was conducted to determine the re-training needs of mechanical engineering technologists who are directly involved in the production of these laboratory apparatus  for improved performance in Scientific Equipment Development Institutes (SEDI) in Nigeria. Two research questions and 2 hypotheses were formulated to guide the study. The study was conducted in the two Scientific Development Institutes located at Minna and Enugu. A survey research design approach was adopted. The entire population of 82 mechanical engineers and 140 mechanical engineering technologists served as the respondents. No sampling was done. A 50 item structured questionnaire was used to collect the relevant data for the study. Data collected were analyzed using frequency counts, standard deviation, mean and t – test statistics. Results from analysis of data showed that all the 50 proposed items were accepted as retraining needs of mechanical engineering technologists. Specifically, the study revealed that the technologists were most deficient in areas of the use of automatic, NC, and CNC machines. It was recommended that as a matter of urgency government should put in place various strategies of retraining such as partnership with production industries, workshops, seminars and short term trainings outside the country. Key words: Re-training, performance, technologists, industries, scientific equipmen

The general goal is to provide the technology required to build systems that can provide intelligent tutoring in IDEF (Integrated Computer Aided Manufacturing Definition Method) modeling. The following subject areas are covered: intelligent tutoring systems for systems analysis methodologies; IDEF tutor architecture and components; developing cognitive skills for IDEF modeling; experimental software; and PC based prototype

Generating an Alternative Thesis Pathway: Critical Reflection of Coursework and Internships

Since internship experiences are recognized as high impact educational practices and the honors thesis is designed to be a gateway to work beyond the typical undergraduate degree, I helped develop a pathway for BENG honors students to use critical reflection to develop an honors thesis related to internship and class experience. Then, I wrote about my own experiences to serve as an example for future BENG students who want to pursue this pathway. My objective for this example thesis was to describe the value of my engineering and technical internships and coursework and how they have shaped my future career in Biological Engineering. I developed criteria for reflecting on my internship experiences in the form of discussion questions and then completed the evaluation process and drew conclusions about my key takeaways, which were (1) it is necessary to check work through a formal QAQC process, (2) there any many types of careers and paths to make an environmental impact, and (3) engineering economics are highly important to any project or company

Does instructional format really matter? Cognitive load theory, multimedia and teaching English Literature

    Get PDF
This article reports a quasi-experimental study on the effects of multimedia teaching and learning in English Literature--a subject which places high cognitive load on students. A large-scale study was conducted in 4 high-achieving secondary schools to examine the differences made to students' learning and performance by the use of multimedia and to relate this to different kinds of multimedia. Statistical significance and effect size calculations indicated that the equivalent of one grade level in General Certificate of Secondary Education (GCSE) was associated with the use of advanced and integrated multimedia, and that this was stronger than the effects of schools and sex of the students. It was found that advanced multimedia software eased cognitive overload, particularly in the area of intrinsic cognitive load. Limitations of the study are drawn, including the needs to examine process variables and learner-related variables. Conclusions and implications for further research and for enhancing teaching and learning with multimedia are made

A comparative study of the perceived educational needs of Iowa Merged Area VII manufacturers and Iowa technical educators

This research was a descriptive pilot study that compared the perceptions of Iowa Merged Area VII manufacturers and Iowa technical educators regarding technical curricula, occupational skill certification, and drafting practices as these relate to Associate Degree programs in Mechanical Drafting and Design Technology. The problem was to determine what should be taught in two year technical curricula in Mechanical Drafting and Design Technology. The purpose of the study was to compare the perceived educational needs of Iowa Merged Area VII manufacturers and Iowa technical educators regarding the content of Mechanical Drafting and Design Technology curricula. The populations used for this study were manufacturing industries located in Iowa Merged Area VII, and technical educators currently teaching in community colleges in the state of Iowa. Two independent samples were used for this research consisting of survey responses from the selected population of Merged Area VII manufacturing industries, and survey responses from technical educators in the state of Iowa. A survey instrument was developed in two versions, one for Iowa Merged Area VII manufacturing industries, and one for Iowa technical educators. Both versions of the survey instrument differed only in the content of the cover letter, instructions for completing each section of the instrument, and in the presence or absence of Section 1 eliciting demographic data from manufacturers. A research hypothesis (H\sb1:\ \mu\sb1\ne\mu\sb2) was established for each of the individual items in Section 2, Associate Degree Curriculum Components; Section 3, Drafting Practices; and Section 4, Occupational Skill Certification (excluding Item 4.9) of the survey instrument. The null hypothesis (H\sb{\rm o}:\ \mu\sb1=\mu\sb2) that corresponded to the research hypothesis (H\sb{\rm o}:\ \mu\sb1\ne\mu\sb2) for each item in Sections 2, 3, and 4 (excluding 4.9) of the survey instrument was tested by comparing the mean of all industry responses for each item with the mean of all educator responses for the same item using a two-tailed t test at the.05 level of significance. The results of the statistical analysis of the data were used to develop a curriculum in Mechanical Drafting and Design Technology that reflects a balance between the opinion of industry and educators, and that meets the expressed educational needs of Iowa Merged Area VII manufacturers
