    Manual Annotation of Translational Equivalence: The Blinker Project

    Bilingual annotators were paid to link roughly sixteen thousand corresponding words between on-line versions of the Bible in modern French and modern English. These annotations are freely available to the research community from http://www.cis.upenn.edu/~melamed . The annotations can be used for several purposes. First, they can be used as a standard data set for developing and testing translation lexicons and statistical translation models. Second, researchers in lexical semantics will be able to mine the annotations for insights about cross-linguistic lexicalization patterns. Third, the annotations can be used in research into certain recently proposed methods for monolingual word-sense disambiguation. This paper describes the annotated texts, the specially-designed annotation tool, and the strategies employed to increase the consistency of the annotations. The annotation process was repeated five times by different annotators. Inter-annotator agreement rates indicate that the annotations are reasonably reliable and that the method is easy to replicate

    An algorithm for cross-lingual sense-clustering tested in a MT evaluation setting

    Unsupervised sense induction methods offer a solution to the problem of scarcity of semantic resources. These methods automatically extract semantic information from textual data and create resources adapted to specific applications and domains of interest. In this paper, we present a clustering algorithm for cross-lingual sense induction which generates bilingual semantic inventories from parallel corpora. We describe the clustering procedure and the obtained resources. We then proceed to a large-scale evaluation by integrating the resources into a Machine Translation (MT) metric (METEOR). We show that the use of the data-driven sense-cluster inventories leads to better correlation with human judgments of translation quality, compared to precision-based metrics, and to improvements similar to those obtained when a handcrafted semantic resource is used

    Lexical coverage evaluation of large-scale multilingual semantic lexicons for twelve languages

    The last two decades have seen the development of various semantic lexical resources such as WordNet (Miller, 1995) and the USAS semantic lexicon (Rayson et al., 2004), which have played an important role in the areas of natural language processing and corpus-based studies. Recently, increasing efforts have been devoted to extending the semantic frameworks of existing lexical knowledge resources to cover more languages, such as EuroWordNet and Global WordNet. In this paper, we report on the construction of large-scale multilingual semantic lexicons for twelve languages, which employ the unified Lancaster semantic taxonomy and provide a multilingual lexical knowledge base for the automatic UCREL semantic annotation system (USAS). Our work contributes towards the goal of constructing larger-scale and higher-quality multilingual semantic lexical resources and developing corpus annotation tools based on them. Lexical coverage is an important factor concerning the quality of the lexicons and the performance of the corpus annotation tools, and in this experiment we focus on evaluating the lexical coverage achieved by the multilingual lexicons and semantic annotation tools based on them. Our evaluation shows that some semantic lexicons such as those for Finnish and Italian have achieved lexical coverage of over 90% while others need further expansion

    The utilization of parallel corpora for the extension of machine translation lexicons

    There has recently been an increasing awareness of the importance of large collections of texts (corpora) used as resources in machine translation research. The process of creating or extending machine translation lexicons is time-consuming, difficult and costly in terms of human involvement. The contribution that corpora can make towards the reduction in cost, time and complexity has been explored by several research groups. This article describes a system that has been developed to identify word-pairs, utilizing an aligned bilingual (English-Afrikaans) corpus in order to extend a bilingual lexicon with the words and their translations that are not present in the lexicon. New translations for existing entries can be added and the system also applies grammar rules for the identification of the grammatical category of each word-pair. This system limits the involvement of the human translator and has a positive impact on the time, cost and effort needed to extend a bilingual lexicon.Keywords: alignment; bilingual corpora; corpus; extension; lexicon; machine translation; monolingual corpora; parallel corpor

    METRICC: Harnessing Comparable Corpora for Multilingual Lexicon Development

    International audienceResearch on comparable corpora has grown in recent years bringing about the possibility of developing multilingual lexicons through the exploitation of comparable corpora to create corpus-driven multilingual dictionaries. To date, this issue has not been widely addressed. This paper focuses on the use of the mechanism of collocational networks proposed by Williams (1998) for exploiting comparable corpora. The paper first provides a description of the METRICC project, which is aimed at the automatically creation of comparable corpora and describes one of the crawlers developed for comparable corpora building, and then discusses the power of collocational networks for multilingual corpus-driven dictionary development
