    Automatic refocus and feature extraction of single-look complex SAR signatures of vessels

    In recent years, spaceborne synthetic aperture radar ( SAR) technology has been considered as a complement to cooperative vessel surveillance systems thanks to its imaging capabilities. In this paper, a processing chain is presented to explore the potential of using basic stripmap single-look complex ( SLC) SAR images of vessels for the automatic extraction of their dimensions and heading. Local autofocus is applied to the vessels' SAR signatures to compensate blurring artefacts in the azimuth direction, improving both their image quality and their estimated dimensions. For the heading, the orientation ambiguities of the vessels' SAR signatures are solved using the direction of their ground-range velocity from the analysis of their Doppler spectra. Preliminary results are provided using five images of vessels from SLC RADARSAT-2 stripmap images. These results have shown good agreement with their respective ground-truth data from Automatic Identification System ( AIS) records at the time of the acquisitions.Postprint (published version

    Nuclear Physics for Cultural Heritage

    Nuclear physics applications in medicine and energy are well known and widely reported. Less well known are the many important nuclear and related techniques used for the study, characterization, assessment and preservation of cultural heritage. There has been enormous progress in this field in recent years and the current review aims to provide the public with a popular and accessible account of this work. The Nuclear Physics Division of the EPS represents scientists from all branches of nuclear physics across Europe. One of its aims is the dissemination of knowledge about nuclear physics and its applications. This review is led by Division board member Anna Macková, Head of the Tandetron Laboratory at the Nuclear Physics Institute of the Czech Academy of Sciences, and the review committee includes four other members of the nuclear physics board interested in this area: Faiçal Azaiez, Johan Nyberg, Eli Piasetzky and Douglas MacGregor. To create a truly authoritative account, the Scientific Editors have invited contributions from leading experts across Europe, and this publication is the combined result of their work. The review is extensively illustrated with important discoveries and examples from archaeology, pre-history, history, geography, culture, religion and curation, which underline the breadth and importance of this field. The large number of groups and laboratories working in the study and preservation of cultural heritage across Europe indicate the enormous effort and importance attached by society to this activity

    Analytical and computational methods towards a metabolic model of ageing in Caenorhabditis elegans

    Human life expectancy is increasing globally. This has major socioeconomic implications, but also raises scientific questions about the biological bases of ageing and longevity. Research on appropriate model organisms, such as the nematode worm Caenorhabditis elegans, is a key component of answering these questions. Ageing is a complex phenomenon, with both environmental and genetic influences. Metabolomics, the analysis of all small molecules within a biological system, offers the ability to integrate these complex factors to help understand the role of metabolism in ageing. This thesis addresses the current lack of methods for C. elegans metabolite analysis, with a particular focus on combining analytical and computational approaches. As a first essential step, C. elegans metabolite extraction protocols for NMR, GC-MS and LC-MS based analysis were optimized. Several methods to improve the coverage, automatic annotation and data analysis steps of NMR and GC-MS are proposed. Next, stable isotope labelling was explored as a tool for C. elegans metabolomics. An automated stable isotope based workflow was developed, which identifies all biological, non-redundant features within a LC-MS acquisition and annotates them with molecular compositions. This demonstrated that the vast majority (> 99.5%) of detected features inside LC-MS metabolomics experiments are not of biological origin or redundant. This stable isotope workflow was then used to compare the metabolism of 24 different C. elegans mutant strains from different pathways (e.g. insulin signalling, TOR pathway, neuronal signalling), with differing levels of lifespan extension compared to wild-type worms. The biologically relevant features (metabolites) were detected and annotated, and compared across the mutants. Some metabolites were correlated with longevity across the mutant set, in particular, glycerophospholipids. This led to the formulation of a hypothesis, that lifespan extension in C. elegans requires increased activity of common downstream longevity effector mechanisms (autophagy, and mitochondrial biogenesis), that also involve subcellular compartmentation and hence membrane formation. This results in the alterations in lipid metabolism detected here.Open Acces
