    Discrete spatial datasets known as point clouds often lay the groundwork for decision-making applications. E.g., we can use such data as a reference for autonomous cars and robot’s navigation, as a layer for floor-plan’s creation and building’s construction, as a digital asset for environment modelling and incident prediction... Applications are numerous, and potentially increasing if we consider point clouds as digital reality assets. Yet, this expansion faces technical limitations mainly from the lack of semantic information within point ensembles. Connecting knowledge sources is still a very manual and time-consuming process suffering from error-prone human interpretation. This highlights a strong need for domain-related data analysis to create a coherent and structured information. The thesis clearly tries to solve automation problematics in point cloud processing to create intelligent environments, i.e. virtual copies that can be used/integrated in fully autonomous reasoning services. We tackle point cloud questions associated with knowledge extraction – particularly segmentation and classification – structuration, visualisation and interaction with cognitive decision systems. We propose to connect both point cloud properties and formalized knowledge to rapidly extract pertinent information using domain-centered graphs. The dissertation delivers the concept of a Smart Point Cloud (SPC) Infrastructure which serves as an interoperable and modular architecture for a unified processing. It permits an easy integration to existing workflows and a multi-domain specialization through device knowledge, analytic knowledge or domain knowledge. Concepts, algorithms, code and materials are given to replicate findings and extend current applications.Les ensembles discrets de données spatiales, appelés nuages de points, forment souvent le support principal pour des scénarios d’aide à la décision. Par exemple, nous pouvons utiliser ces données comme référence pour les voitures autonomes et la navigation des robots, comme couche pour la création de plans et la construction de bâtiments, comme actif numérique pour la modélisation de l'environnement et la prédiction d’incidents... Les applications sont nombreuses et potentiellement croissantes si l'on considère les nuages de points comme des actifs de réalité numérique. Cependant, cette expansion se heurte à des limites techniques dues principalement au manque d'information sémantique au sein des ensembles de points. La création de liens avec des sources de connaissances est encore un processus très manuel, chronophage et lié à une interprétation humaine sujette à l'erreur. Cela met en évidence la nécessité d'une analyse automatisée des données relatives au domaine étudié afin de créer une information cohérente et structurée. La thèse tente clairement de résoudre les problèmes d'automatisation dans le traitement des nuages de points pour créer des environnements intelligents, c'est-àdire des copies virtuelles qui peuvent être utilisées/intégrées dans des services de raisonnement totalement autonomes. Nous abordons plusieurs problématiques liées aux nuages de points et associées à l'extraction des connaissances - en particulier la segmentation et la classification - la structuration, la visualisation et l'interaction avec les systèmes cognitifs de décision. Nous proposons de relier à la fois les propriétés des nuages de points et les connaissances formalisées pour extraire rapidement les informations pertinentes à l'aide de graphes centrés sur le domaine. La dissertation propose le concept d'une infrastructure SPC (Smart Point Cloud) qui sert d'architecture interopérable et modulaire pour un traitement unifié. Elle permet une intégration facile aux flux de travail existants et une spécialisation multidomaine grâce aux connaissances liée aux capteurs, aux connaissances analytiques ou aux connaissances de domaine. Plusieurs concepts, algorithmes, codes et supports sont fournis pour reproduire les résultats et étendre les applications actuelles.Diskrete räumliche Datensätze, so genannte Punktwolken, bilden oft die Grundlage für Entscheidungsanwendungen. Die Anwendungen sind zahlreich und nehmen potenziell zu, wenn wir Punktwolken als Digital Reality Assets betrachten. Allerdings stößt diese Erweiterung vor allem durch den Mangel an semantischen Informationen innerhalb von Punkt-Ensembles auf technische Grenzen. Die Verbindung von Wissensquellen ist immer noch ein sehr manueller und zeitaufwendiger Prozess, der unter fehleranfälliger menschlicher Interpretation leidet. Dies verdeutlicht den starken Bedarf an domänenbezogenen Datenanalysen, um eine kohärente und strukturierte Information zu schaffen. Die Arbeit versucht eindeutig, Automatisierungsprobleme in der Punktwolkenverarbeitung zu lösen, um intelligente Umgebungen zu schaffen, d.h. virtuelle Kopien, die in vollständig autonome Argumentationsdienste verwendet/integriert werden können. Wir befassen uns mit Punktwolkenfragen im Zusammenhang mit der Wissensextraktion - insbesondere Segmentierung und Klassifizierung - Strukturierung, Visualisierung und Interaktion mit kognitiven Entscheidungssystemen. Wir schlagen vor, sowohl Punktwolkeneigenschaften als auch formalisiertes Wissen zu verbinden, um schnell relevante Informationen mithilfe von domänenzentrierten Grafiken zu extrahieren. Die Dissertation liefert das Konzept einer Smart Point Cloud (SPC) Infrastruktur, die als interoperable und modulare Architektur für eine einheitliche Verarbeitung dient. Es ermöglicht eine einfache Integration in bestehende Workflows und eine multidimensionale Spezialisierung durch Gerätewissen, analytisches Wissen oder Domänenwissen.     Semantic Localization and Mapping in Robot Vision

    Integration of human semantics plays an increasing role in robotics tasks such as mapping, localization and detection. Increased use of semantics serves multiple purposes, including giving computers the ability to process and present data containing human meaningful concepts, allowing computers to employ human reasoning to accomplish tasks. This dissertation presents three solutions which incorporate semantics onto visual data in order to address these problems. First, on the problem of constructing topological maps from sequence of images. The proposed solution includes a novel image similarity score which uses dynamic programming to match images using both appearance and relative positions of local features simultaneously. An MRF is constructed to model the probability of loop-closures and a locally optimal labeling is found using Loopy-BP. The recovered loop closures are then used to generate a topological map. Results are presented on four urban sequences and one indoor sequence. The second system uses video and annotated maps to solve localization. Data association is achieved through detection of object classes, annotated in prior maps, rather than through detection of visual features. To avoid the caveats of object recognition, a new representation of query images is introduced consisting of a vector of detection scores for each object class. Using soft object detections, hypotheses about pose are refined through particle filtering. Experiments include both small office spaces, and a large open urban rail station with semantically ambiguous places. This approach showcases a representation that is both robust and can exploit the plethora of existing prior maps for GPS-denied environments while avoiding the data association problems encountered when matching point clouds or visual features. Finally, a purely vision-based approach for constructing semantic maps given camera pose and simple object exemplar images. Object response heatmaps are combined with known pose to back-project detection information onto the world. These update the world model, integrating information over time as the camera moves. The approach avoids making hard decisions on object recognition, and aggregates evidence about objects in the world coordinate system. These solutions simultaneously showcase the contribution of semantics in robotics and provide state of the art solutions to these fundamental problems

    3D Classification of Power Line Scene Using Airborne Lidar Data

    Failure to adequately maintain vegetation within a power line corridor has been identified as a main cause of the August 14, 2003 electric power blackout. Such that, timely and accurate corridor mapping and monitoring are indispensible to mitigate such disaster. Moreover, airborne LiDAR (Light Detection And Ranging) has been recently introduced and widely utilized in industries and academies thanks to its potential to automate the data processing for scene analysis including power line corridor mapping. However, today’s corridor mapping practice using LiDAR in industries still remains an expensive manual process that is not suitable for the large-scale, rapid commercial compilation of corridor maps. Additionally, in academies only few studies have developed algorithms capable of recognizing corridor objects in the power line scene, which are mostly based on 2-dimensional classification. Thus, the objective of this dissertation is to develop a 3-dimensional classification system which is able to automatically identify key objects in the power line corridor from large-scale LiDAR data. This dissertation introduces new features for power structures, especially for the electric pylon, and existing features which are derived through diverse piecewise (i.e., point, line and plane) feature extraction, and then constructs a classification model pool by building individual models according to the piecewise feature sets and diverse voltage training samples using Random Forests. Finally, this dissertation proposes a Multiple Classifier System (MCS) which provides an optimal committee of models from the model pool for classification of new incoming power line scene. The proposed MCS has been tested on a power line corridor where medium voltage transmission lines (115 kV and 230 kV) pass. The classification results based on the MCS applied by optimally selecting the pre-built classification models according to the voltage type of the test corridor demonstrate a good accuracy (89.07%) and computationally effective time cost (approximately 4 hours/km) without additional training fees

    Lidar-based Obstacle Detection and Recognition for Autonomous Agricultural Vehicles

    Today, agricultural vehicles are available that can drive autonomously and follow exact route plans more precisely than human operators. Combined with advancements in precision agriculture, autonomous agricultural robots can reduce manual labor, improve workflow, and optimize yield. However, as of today, human operators are still required for monitoring the environment and acting upon potential obstacles in front of the vehicle. To eliminate this need, safety must be ensured by accurate and reliable obstacle detection and avoidance systems.In this thesis, lidar-based obstacle detection and recognition in agricultural environments has been investigated. A rotating multi-beam lidar generating 3D point clouds was used for point-wise classification of agricultural scenes, while multi-modal fusion with cameras and radar was used to increase performance and robustness. Two research perception platforms were presented and used for data acquisition. The proposed methods were all evaluated on recorded datasets that represented a wide range of realistic agricultural environments and included both static and dynamic obstacles.For 3D point cloud classification, two methods were proposed for handling density variations during feature extraction. One method outperformed a frequently used generic 3D feature descriptor, whereas the other method showed promising preliminary results using deep learning on 2D range images. For multi-modal fusion, four methods were proposed for combining lidar with color camera, thermal camera, and radar. Gradual improvements in classification accuracy were seen, as spatial, temporal, and multi-modal relationships were introduced in the models. Finally, occupancy grid mapping was used to fuse and map detections globally, and runtime obstacle detection was applied on mapped detections along the vehicle path, thus simulating an actual traversal.The proposed methods serve as a first step towards full autonomy for agricultural vehicles. The study has thus shown that recent advancements in autonomous driving can be transferred to the agricultural domain, when accurate distinctions are made between obstacles and processable vegetation.     Discovering Regularity in Point Clouds of Urban Scenes

    Despite the apparent chaos of the urban environment, cities are actually replete with regularity. From the grid of streets laid out over the earth, to the lattice of windows thrown up into the sky, periodic regularity abounds in the urban scene. Just as salient, though less uniform, are the self-similar branching patterns of trees and vegetation that line streets and fill parks. We propose novel methods for discovering these regularities in 3D range scans acquired by a time-of-flight laser sensor. The applications of this regularity information are broad, and we present two original algorithms. The first exploits the efficiency of the Fourier transform for the real-time detection of periodicity in building facades. Periodic regularity is discovered online by doing a plane sweep across the scene and analyzing the frequency space of each column in the sweep. The simplicity and online nature of this algorithm allow it to be embedded in scanner hardware, making periodicity detection a built-in feature of future 3D cameras. We demonstrate the usefulness of periodicity in view registration, compression, segmentation, and facade reconstruction. The second algorithm leverages the hierarchical decomposition and locality in space of the wavelet transform to find stochastic parameters for procedural models that succinctly describe vegetation. These procedural models facilitate the generation of virtual worlds for architecture, gaming, and augmented reality. The self-similarity of vegetation can be inferred using multi-resolution analysis to discover the underlying branching patterns.     Road Surface Feature Extraction and Reconstruction of Laser Point Clouds for Urban Environment

    Automakers are developing end-to-end three-dimensional (3D) mapping system for Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) and autonomous vehicles (AVs). Using geomatics, artificial intelligence, and SLAM (Simultaneous Localization and Mapping) systems to handle all stages of map creation, sensor calibration and alignment. It is crucial to have a system highly accurate and efficient as it is an essential part of vehicle controls. Such mapping requires significant resources to acquire geographic information (GIS and GPS), optical laser and radar spectroscopy, Lidar, and 3D modeling applications in order to extract roadway features (e.g., lane markings, traffic signs, road-edges) detailed enough to construct a “base map”. To keep this map current, it is necessary to update changes due to occurring events such as construction changes, traffic patterns, or growth of vegetation. The information of the road play a very important factor in road traffic safety and it is essential for for guiding autonomous vehicles (AVs), and prediction of upcoming road situations within AVs. The data size of the map is extensive due to the level of information provided with different sensor modalities for that reason a data optimization and extraction from three-dimensional (3D) mobile laser scanning (MLS) point clouds is presented in this thesis. The research shows the proposed hybrid filter configuration together with the dynamic developed mechanism provides significant reduction of the point cloud data with reduced computational or size constraints.
