Live delivery of neurosurgical operating theater experience in virtual reality

    Get PDF
A system for assisting in microneurosurgical training and for delivering interactive mixed reality surgical experience live was developed and experimented in hospital premises. An interactive experience from the neurosurgical operating theater was presented together with associated medical content on virtual reality eyewear of remote users. Details of the stereoscopic 360-degree capture, surgery imaging equipment, signal delivery, and display systems are presented, and the presence experience and the visual quality questionnaire results are discussed. The users reported positive scores on the questionnaire on topics related to the user experience achieved in the trial.Peer reviewe

Exploring the Application of RFID for Designing Augmented Virtual Reality Experience

Recent technical advancement has driven the boundary between the physical reality and digital virtuality to diminish significantly. As part of the emerging trend, existing research leverages a synergized use of Radio Frequency IDentification (RFID) and virtual reality (VR) to create compelling hybrid user experience. However, current state-of-the-art literature indicates a lack of coherent architecture for seamlessly integrating these two siloed technology stacks, thus hindering full-fledged mixed and extended reality applications. In this article, we first conducted a comprehensive literature review and identified key design themes and different technical affordances of RFID within VR context; in reflection of our findings, we hence proposed an overarching architecture to facilitate swift and flexible composition of RFID and VR; Three use cases were further established using the proposed architecture to both demonstrate its technical feasibility and qualitatively assess RFID's augmentation over conventional VR applications. This exploratory research intends to offer some preliminary design knowledge and insights for designing and developing RFID-augmented VR applications, open up opportunities for further discussion and research interest in this area, thus ultimately contributing to more immersive, interactive and informative user experience.publishedVersionPeer reviewe

The virtual laboratory of digital electronics using mobile virtual reality technology to save to cost of making real laboratory. Mobile virtual reality can use by student to practice digital electronics skill in their home. This study to finds the skill improvement of student in competency digital electronics using virtual laboratory with mobile virtual reality based. Virtual laboratory can help student to feel the real practice of laboratory in everywhere and every time. The feature of virtual laboratory is: (1) enable to do practice digital electronics in every time and everywhere, (2) student can do experiment like in laboratory using android phone, (3) support with many of android phone series. This study uses a research and development method using waterfall model that have five stage to develop a software application. The results show that the virtual laboratory can help student to improve their skill of digital electronics because easy feature and real time of virtual laborator

Programmable Edge-to-Cloud Virtualization for 5G Media Industry: The 5G-MEDIA Approach

    Get PDF
To ensure high Quality of Experience (QoE) for end users, many media applications require significant quantities of computing and network resources, making their realization challenging in resource constrained environments. In this paper, we present the approach of the 5G-MEDIA project, providing an integrated programmable service platform for the development, design and operations of media applications in 5G networks, facilitating media service management across the service life cycle. The platform offers tools to service developers for efficient development, testing and continuous correction of services. One step further, it provides a service virtualization platform offering horizontal services, such as a Media Service Catalogue and accounting services, as well as optimization mechanisms to flexibly adapt service operations to dynamic conditions with efficient use of infrastructure resources. The paper outlines three use cases where the platform was tested and validated

Virtual Realia: Maneuverable computer 3D models and their use in learning assembly skills.

Two experiments compared real and virtual models as aids for learning assembly skills. In Experiment 1, ten participants individually studied either a fully assembled model, or a computer-generated one, in exploded view, that could be spatially manipulated in any direction. Participants then assembled the object in front of a video camera. ANOVA indicated virtual model are studied significantly longer but yield faster assembly than a real model. Experiment 2 used the same treatments plus a fully assembled virtual mode, randomly assigned to 28 participants who studied the aid, assembled the model, and then repeated the task from memory 3 days later. ANOVA indicated no differences between the three groups in assembly speed or accuracy. However, participants studied the exploded virtual model significantly longer than the two intact views of the model suggesting the former may impose a greater cognitive load due to the additional visual information it provides
