    Towards speech quality assessment using a crowdsourcing approach: evaluation of standardized methods

    Subjective speech quality assessment has traditionally been carried out in laboratory environments under controlled conditions. With the advent of crowdsourcing platforms tasks, which need human intelligence, can be resolved by crowd workers over the Internet. Crowdsourcing also offers a new paradigm for speech quality assessment, promising higher ecological validity of the quality judgments at the expense of potentially lower reliability. This paper compares laboratory-based and crowdsourcing-based speech quality assessments in terms of comparability of results and efficiency. For this purpose, three pairs of listening-only tests have been carried out using three different crowdsourcing platforms and following the ITU-T Recommendation P.808. In each test, listeners judge the overall quality of the speech sample following the Absolute Category Rating procedure. We compare the results of the crowdsourcing approach with the results of standard laboratory tests performed according to the ITU-T Recommendation P.800. Results show that in most cases, both paradigms lead to comparable results. Notable differences are discussed with respect to their sources, and conclusions are drawn that establish practical guidelines for crowdsourcing-based speech quality assessment

    The quality of experience of next generation audio :exploring system, context and human influence factors

    PhD ThesisThe next generation of audio reproduction technology has the potential to deliver immersive and personalised experiences to the user; multichannel with-height loudspeaker arrays and binaural techniques offer 3D audio experiences, whereas objectbased techniques offer possibilities of adapting content to suit the system, context and user. A fundamental process in the advancement of such technology is perceptual evaluation. It is crucial to understand how listeners perceive new technology in order to drive future developments. This thesis explores the experience provided by next generation audio technology by taking a quality of experience (QoE) approach to evaluation. System, context and human factors all influence QoE and in this thesis three case studies are presented to explore the role of these categories of influence factors (IFs) in the context of next generation audio evaluation. Furthermore, these case studies explore suitable methods and approaches for the evaluation of the QoE of next generation audio with respect to its various IFs. Specific contributions delivered from these individual studies include a subjective comparison between soundbar and discrete surround sound technology, the application of the Open Profiling of Quality method to the field of audio evaluation, an understanding of both how and why environmental noise influences preferred audio object balance, an understanding of how the influence of technical audio quality on overall listening experience is related to a range of psychographic variables and an assessment of the impact of binaural processing on overall listening experience.     Estimation of the QoE for video streaming services based on facial expressions and gaze direction

    As the multimedia technologies evolve, the need to control their quality becomes even more important making the Quality of Experience (QoE) measurements a key priority. Machine Learning (ML) can support this task providing models to analyse the information extracted by the multimedia. It is possible to divide the ML models applications in the following categories: 1) QoE modelling: ML is used to define QoE models which provide an output (e.g., perceived QoE score) for any given input (e.g., QoE influence factor). 2) QoE monitoring in case of encrypted traffic: ML is used to analyze passive traffic monitored data to obtain insight into degradations perceived by end-users. 3) Big data analytics: ML is used for the extraction of meaningful and useful information from the collected data, which can further be converted to actionable knowledge and utilized in managing QoE. The QoE estimation quality task can be carried out by using two approaches: the objective approach and subjective one. As the two names highlight, they are referred to the pieces of information that the model analyses. The objective approach analyses the objective features extracted by the network connection and by the used media. As objective parameters, the state-of-the-art shows different approaches that use also the features extracted by human behaviour. The subjective approach instead, comes as a result of the rating approach, where the participants were asked to rate the perceived quality using different scales. This approach had the problem of being a time-consuming approach and for this reason not all the users agree to compile the questionnaire. Thus the direct evolution of this approach is the ML model adoption. A model can substitute the questionnaire and evaluate the QoE, depending on the data that analyses. By modelling the human response to the perceived quality on multimedia, QoE researchers found that the parameters extracted from the users could be different, like Electroencephalogram (EEG), Electrocardiogram (ECG), waves of the brain. The main problem with these techniques is the hardware. In fact, the user must wear electrodes in case of ECG and EEG, and also if the obtained results from these methods are relevant, their usage in a real context could be not feasible. For this reason, my studies have been focused on the developing of a Machine Learning framework completely unobtrusively based on the Facial reactions

    The quality of experience of emerging display technologies

    As new display technologies emerge and become part of everyday life, the understanding of the visual experience they provide becomes more relevant. The cognition of perception is the most vital component of visual experience; however, it is not the only cognition that contributes to the complex overall experience of the end-user. Expectations can create significant cognitive bias that may even override what the user genuinely perceives. Even if a visualization technology is somewhat novel, expectations can be fuelled by prior experiences gained from using similar displays and, more importantly, even a single word or an acronym may induce serious preconceptions, especially if such word suggests excellence in quality. In this interdisciplinary Ph.D. thesis, the effect of minimal, one-word labels on the Quality of Experience (QoE) is investigated in a series of subjective tests. In the studies carried out on an ultra-high-definition (UHD) display, UHD video contents were directly compared to their HD counterparts, with and without labels explicitly informing the test participants about the resolution of each stimulus. The experiments on High Dynamic Range (HDR) visualization addressed the effect of the word “premium” on the quality aspects of HDR video, and also how this may affect the perceived duration of stalling events. In order to support the findings, additional tests were carried out comparing the stalling detection thresholds of HDR video with conventional Low Dynamic Range (LDR) video. The third emerging technology addressed by this thesis is light field visualization. Due to its novel nature and the lack of comprehensive, exhaustive research on the QoE of light field displays and content parameters at the time of this thesis, instead of investigating the labeling effect, four phases of subjective studies were performed on light field QoE. The first phases started with fundamental research, and the experiments progressed towards the concept and evaluation of the dynamic adaptive streaming of light field video, introduced in the final phase

    The role of human influence factors on overall listening experience

    Overall listening experience (OLE) is an evaluation measure specific to the evaluation of audio, which aims to include all possible factors that may influence listeners’ ratings of stimuli. As with quality of experience in general, OLE ratings are user dependent. Previous research has shown that listeners can be categorised by how much their OLE is influenced by content and technical audio quality respectively. In this article, we expand on this knowledge by investigating correlations between a range of human influence factors and the degree to which a listener is influenced by content and technical audio quality. This was done by means of a web-based experiment involving 58 participants from a range of backgrounds. Results show that listener type is significantly correlated with a range of psychographic variables and that the attitudinal measure ‘competence’ is the most suitable variable to be used as a predictor of listener type. As well as these results having direct applications such as tailoring systems and services to the needs of specific user groups, the results presented add to the understanding of how human factors can influence quality of experience in general

    Computational inference and control of quality in multimedia services

    Quality is the degree of excellence we expect of a service or a product. It is also one of the key factors that determine its value. For multimedia services, understanding the experienced quality means understanding how the delivered delity, precision and reliability correspond to the users' expectations. Yet the quality of multimedia services is inextricably linked to the underlying technology. It is developments in video recording, compression and transport as well as display technologies that enables high quality multimedia services to become ubiquitous. The constant evolution of these technologies delivers a steady increase in performance, but also a growing level of complexity. As new technologies stack on top of each other the interactions between them and their components become more intricate and obscure. In this environment optimizing the delivered quality of multimedia services becomes increasingly challenging. The factors that aect the experienced quality, or Quality of Experience (QoE), tend to have complex non-linear relationships. The subjectively perceived QoE is hard to measure directly and continuously evolves with the user's expectations. Faced with the diculty of designing an expert system for QoE management that relies on painstaking measurements and intricate heuristics, we turn to an approach based on learning or inference. The set of solutions presented in this work rely on computational intelligence techniques that do inference over the large set of signals coming from the system to deliver QoE models based on user feedback. We furthermore present solutions for inference of optimized control in systems with no guarantees for resource availability. This approach oers the opportunity to be more accurate in assessing the perceived quality, to incorporate more factors and to adapt as technology and user expectations evolve. In a similar fashion, the inferred control strategies can uncover more intricate patterns coming from the sensors and therefore implement farther-reaching decisions. Similarly to natural systems, this continuous adaptation and learning makes these systems more robust to perturbations in the environment, longer lasting accuracy and higher eciency in dealing with increased complexity. Overcoming this increasing complexity and diversity is crucial for addressing the challenges of future multimedia system. Through experiments and simulations this work demonstrates that adopting an approach of learning can improve the sub jective and objective QoE estimation, enable the implementation of ecient and scalable QoE management as well as ecient control mechanisms
