A survey and tutorial of electromagnetic radiation and reduction in mobile communication systems

    Get PDF
This paper provides a survey and tutorial of electromagnetic (EM) radiation exposure and reduction in mobile communication systems. EM radiation exposure has received a fair share of interest in the literature; however, this work is one of the first to compile the most interesting results and ideas related to EM exposure in mobile communication systems and present possible ways of reducing it. We provide a comprehensive survey of existing literature and also offer a tutorial on the dosimetry, metrics, international projects as well as guidelines and limits on the exposure from EM radiation in mobile communication systems. Based on this survey and given that EM radiation exposure is closely linked with specific absorption rate (SAR) and transmit power usage, we propose possible techniques for reducing EM radiation exposure in mobile communication systems by exploring known concepts related to SAR and transmit power reduction in mobile systems. Thus, this paper serves as an introductory guide to EM radiation exposure in mobile communication systems and provides insights toward the design of future low-EM exposure mobile communication networks

A novel method to assess human population exposure induced by a wireless cellular network

<p>This paper presents a new metric to evaluate electromagnetic exposure induced by wireless cellular networks. This metric takes into account the exposure induced by base station antennas as well as exposure induced by wireless devices to evaluate average global exposure of the population in a specific geographical area. The paper first explains the concept and gives the formulation of the Exposure Index (EI). Then, the EI computation is illustrated through simple phone call scenarios (indoor office, in train) and a complete macro urban data long-term evolution scenario showing how, based on simulations, radio-planning predictions, realistic population statistics, user traffic data, and specific absorption rate calculations can be combined to assess the index.</p

The Regulatory Framework For Wireless Power Transfer Systems

    Get PDF
A survey of the regulatory framework pertinent to Wireless Power Transfer systems is given. Both technical (power and frequency) considerations along with health safety radiation compliance are examined. A primer on regulatory processes is also included to facilitate the understanding of the developments. The current state is analysed and ongoing regulatory activities across the globe are discussed. Furthermore, a review of recent radiation safety studies of WPT systems is included

Prediction and comparison of downlink electric-field and uplink localised SAR values for realistic indoor wireless planning

In this paper, for the first time a heuristic network calculator for both whole-body exposure due to indoor base station antennas or access points (downlink exposure) and localised exposure due to the mobile device (uplink exposure) in indoor wireless networks is presented. As an application, three phone call scenarios are investigated (Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS) macrocell, UMTS femtocell andWiFi voice-over-IP) and compared with respect to the electric-field strength and localised specific absorption rate (SAR) distribution. Prediction models are created and successfully validated with an accuracy of 3 dB. The benefits of the UMTS power control mechanisms are demonstrated. However, dependent on the macrocell connection quality and on the user's average phone call connection time, also the macrocell solution might be preferential from an exposure point of view for the considered scenario

Brain cortical stimulation thresholds to different magnetic field sources exposures at intermediate frequencies

Permissible field strengths in the international guidelines/standard for human protection are derived from peripheral nerve system stimulation at the intermediate frequencies where electrostimulation (attributable to axon activation) is more dominant than thermal effect. Recently, multiscale computation has been used to investigate neuron stimulation thresholds by incorporating individual neurons into realistic head models. However, the consistency of excitation models and permissible levels to specific target tissues (central nervous system) needs to be clarified. This article aims to investigate brain cortical stimulation thresholds using a multiscale computational approach for different scenarios of magnetic field exposures. The magnetic exposures include transcranial magnetic stimulation, uniform exposure, and wireless power transfer systems. Our results confirmed the consistency of the multiscale computations of the cortical thresholds between two independent groups for electromagnetic exposure of transcranial magnetic stimulation (thresholds in the range of motor cortex activation). We also quantified the conservativeness of permissible field strengths of international guidelines/standards at intermediate frequencies. Finally, with the multiscale approach, we confirmed that 10 000 kW of transmitting power of wireless power transfer (WPT) in an electric vehicle charging system may not induce an adverse effect for cortical activation

Hybrid ray-tracing/FDTD method for human exposure evaluation of a massive MIMO technology in an industrial indoor environment

This paper presents a numerical approach for massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) human exposure assessment. It combines ray-tracing for the estimation of the wireless channel and the finite-difference time-domain method to simulate the exposure of a realistic human phantom. We apply it to estimate the exposure in a model of an industrial indoor environment with a single massive MIMO base station (BS). The exposure scenarios include line-of-sight and non-line-of-sight propagation with the BS using equal gain transmission precoding at 3.5 GHz. Calculated channel parameters are discussed in comparison with the data available in the literature. The exposure in the phantom's head is evaluated in terms of the peak-spatial specific absorption rate averaged over a 10-g cube and referenced to the free-space time-averaged Poynting vector magnitude at the same location
