Lights, Camera, Lawsuit
As the speed of Internet access improves, the film industry will need to explore its options for eliminating the downloading of digital movie files. After examining the successes and failures of the music industry in its battle with peer-to-peer networks, the film industry has begun to follow its predecessor. However, the nature of film as an entertainment medium is quite different than that of music. As a result, the film industry could implement creative solutions to this problem that would not have been available to the music industry. A recent study shows that most films available on the Internet have been leaked by industry insiders. By implementing an increasingly publicized use of trade secret litigation, the film industry could take a tough and effective stance against the digital dragon

Issues Surrounding the mp3 and Its Effects On Business
The mp3 is a rising issue in today\u27s news. Through research and documentation of interviews, this thesis covers: what the mp3 is; issues surrounding its use; technology versus intellectual property; ethics involved in file swapping; past and current litigations involving the mp3; and possible solutions to the mp3 issue. The mp3 is a great technology that can be a boon to both music listeners and the recording industry alike, if both sides are willing to find a compromise that can balance fair use of technology versus the right to be compensated for intellectual property
Jazz and nation in Australia: bridging the gap on screen, 1919â1933
When jazz arrived in Australia as live performance in 1918, it initially was
taken by the establishment as a threat to national identity, in particular
as that identity had been associated with masculinist rural mythologies
centred on what was known as âthe Bushâ.1
The Bush was where the nation
was created, through the heroic labour required for the conquest of the
land. With its roots in nineteenth century pioneer frontier narratives, the
values of the Bush were at odds with urban modernity and the lifestyles
it fostered. The musical expression of the latter was jazz â a cacophonous
importation from the USA with connotations of ânegroidâ savagery and
decadent effeminisation. Jazz thus functioned as the âOtherâ in received
discourses of nation. By the 1950s there was a growing synergy between
Australian identity and jazz, consolidated by the arrival of a new music
of the Other in the form of rockânâroll. But the beginnings of this rapprochement can be identified from the early thirties when changes in
the understanding of both jazz and nation began to bring the two into
closer alignment. This paper explores those early relational shifts as they were manifested cinematically. Although it is widely held that the Great
Depression ended the first phase of Australian jazz history, nonetheless it
will be argued here that it was the search for solutions to the problem of
the Depression that help to build a âbridgeâ between jazz and Australian
identity, in conjunction with a new appreciation of the meliorative possibilities of modernity, particularly as reflected in the construction of the
Sydney Harbour Bridge and the transition from silent to sound films
The Art of Adaptation
My honors thesis The Art of Adaptation discusses the process of adapting old stories and theatrical pieces for modern audiences through the exploration of various adaptations (theatrical, operatic, dance and film) of Euripides\u27 Medea. It also touches on my own short, modern, adaptation; FURY: A Rock Musical Inspired by Medea. All of this research was important in making the performance aspect of my capstone the best it could be

Research Perspectives on the Public Domain: Digital Conference Proceedings
The public domain is a subject of vital interest to legal scholars, but its implications are far reaching â indeed, the public domain concept is germane to subjects as diverse as film and media studies, economics, political science and organisational theory. It was a central purpose of the workshop to arrive at a workable definition of the public domain suitable for empirical investigation. The traditional definition (1) takes the copyright term as the starting point, and defines the public domain as âout of copyrightâ, i.e. all uses of a copyright work are possible. A second, more fine-grained definition (2) still relies on the statutory provisions of copyright law, and asks what activities are possible with respect to a copyright work without asking for permission (e.g. because use is related to âunderlying ideasâ not appropriating substantial expressions, or because use is covered by specific copyright exceptions). A third definition (3) includes as part of the public domain all uses that are possible under permissive private ordering schemes (such as creative commons licences). A forth definition (4) moves into a space that includes use that would formally be copyright infringement but is endorsed, or at least tolerated by certain communities of practice (e.g. machinima or fan fiction)
Theft! A History of Music
Greay Whales Eschristius robustus are the only large whales that are specialized bottom feeders, foraging on bottom sediments. When surfacing after a feeding dive a mud plume is formed at the surface as remaining sediment is strained out between the baleen. In the Chukchi Sea, Short-tailed Shearwaters Puffinus tenuirostris are attrackted to these mud plumes in search of food particles.
