Analysis of Pull-Factor Determinants of Filipino International Migration
This paper was conducted to examine the pull-factor determinants of Filipino international migration. This study employed Ordinary Least Square (OLS) estimation of gravity model using panel data consisting of 27 countries of destinations from 2007 to 2011.
Results of the study revealed that migration flow over the years is increasing. Furthermore, 39% of Filipino migrants were located in USA, this is followed by Canada, UK, Australia and Italy which is the home of 34%, 15%, 5% and 3% of Filipinos respectively. Estimation results of the determinants of Filipino international migration showed that GDP, unemployment rate, cost of living, fiscal freedom, religion, distance and being a member of OECD are not significant pull factor indicators of Filipino migration. Furthermore, it revealed that Filipino migration is significantly and positively affected by population in the destination country. It shows the higher expectancy of migrants to acquire jobs in the destination country. Moreover, Filipino migrants preferred to migrate to a country which has less corruption and that English speaking countries are preferred destination by Filipino migrants

Understanding the barriers to real estate investment in developing economies
Baum (2008a) related the number of real estate funds investing in developing economies to simple economic and demographic variables, and showed that, while the popularity of markets was explained by population and GDP per capita, some countries receive more or less investment than the model predicted. Why is this? In this paper we undertake a literature review to identify the barriers which inhibit international real estate investment. We test our initial findings by questioning property investment professionals through semi-structured interviews. By doing this we were able to verify our list of barriers, identify those barriers which are most likely to affect real estate investors, and to indicate whether there are any real estate-specific variables that create barriers which have not received any academic attention. We show that distortions in international capital flows may be explained by a combination of these formal and informal barriers
INFLUENCE OF CELL WALL CALCIUM CONTENT IN FRUIT FIRMNESS DURING THE RIPENING OF PLUMS (PRUNUS DOMESTICA L.).
‘Rainha Claudia Verde’ is a regional cultivar of Prunus domestica L. well adapted to a specific region in the south of Portugal. In order to understand the postharvest behavior of this cultivar produced in different orchards, cell wall poly-saccharides and cell wall calcium fruit content were studied during ripening in two consecutive years. During harvest period pectic fractions soluble in water, carbonate and KOH were prepared from alcohol-insoluble residue (AIR) of plums. Galacturonic and neutral sugars contents were measured during fruit ripening and fruit firmness was also evaluated. The calcium fruit level was determined in the AIR during harvest season as well as in dry matter. Fruit firmness was significantly higher in the second year and was probably related with calcium fruit content and pectic polysaccharides. There was a significant difference in calcium fruit content between orchards, and this might influence the overall fruit texture during the postharvest period. During fruit ripening water soluble pectic polysaccharides did not change significantly, which corresponded with the small decrease in tissue firmness. The occurrence in the supernatant of the cellulosic residue of highly branched polysaccharides might be the consequence of matrix material associated with microfibrilar phase. Depolymerization of the hemicellulosic fraction was not evident during plum ripening. The loss of fruit firmness is a consequence of many cellular events which are influenced by external factors. The knowledge of calcium content in the cell wall and the pectic poly¬saccharides could be of great importance to local farmers to predict fruit texture
The influence of Motivations and Barriers in the Benefits. An empirical study of EMAS certified business in Spain
The main objective of this research is to analyze through a structured questionnaire, the influence of the
motivations that lead companies to implement Eco-Management and Audit Scheme (EMAS) and the
barriers found in the benefits perceived by companies, as well as, the degree of difficulty perceived for
the implementation of the different requirements to be fulfilled, which are established in the regulation.
An extensive review of the academic literature published on motivations, barriers, difficulties and
benefits in environmental standards has been carried out in order to establish the working hypotheses
which refer to the relationship between motivations, barriers with the benefits and degree of difficulty in
implementing the requirements. The empirical investigation was carried out in a sample of 114 of the
255 companies of the Autonomous Community of Galicia (Spain) that have EMAS certification. The
methodology used was the use of the application of a regression analysis to test the hypotheses; pre-
viously the measurement scales were validated and an exploratory factorial analysis was applied in order
to determine the structure of the different variables considered in the study. The results show that the
motivations affect the benefits positively and on the contrary, affect the barriers negatively (reduce
them) and it was observed that the greater the barriers, the lower the benefits obtained from the
implementation of EMAS (negative influence). The proposed regression models show the joint influence
of the motivations and barriers on the benefits considered
The role of ICT in teacher education. The development of web pages by project method
This paper is a description of an in-service teacher training experience that used ICT to develop a project that involved teachers (nursery and primary) and also children, parents and other members of the educational community. Its aim was to build an Internet site that would give information about school life. It's an open web space where teachers, parents and students can express and share their ideals and activities. This project is still in progress and is being developed in three interconnected phases: conception, development and evaluation. The most important issue to relate is that the technical or instrumental learning is dependent on the ideas and purposes of teachers, students and parents.
We believe that when we talk about ICT in schools and also in teacher education we shouldn't only be concerned with the 'means', that is to say, how to introduce computers or how to use a word processor and Internet resources, but also with the 'ends'. Only when we question the ends do we begin to pay attention to what we do, that is, to construct a story that is worth telling " ... to tell that we are merely tools makers (and tools users) is to miss the entire narrative aim? We are world's makers and world's weavers" (Postman, 2002, p. 108)
