This study evaluated the choice between wooden pews and plastic chairs in selected Churches in Obio-Akpor Local Government Area (LGA) of Rivers State. Five wards were randomly selected from the 17 Political Wards in the study area. Two major towns were purposely selected from the wards and 10 churches consisting of 5 Orthodox Churches and 5 Pentecostal Churches were randomly selected from each town. Data were collected through the administration of well-structured questionnaires, oral interview and market survey. Data collected were analyzed using simple frequencies and percentages. The results showed that, 43% of Orthodox Churches are making use of wooden pews while 46% of Pentecostal churches make use of plastic chairs. Results also revealed that there is significant difference between the cost of production of one pew and its equivalent number of chairs while there is no significant difference between cost of production of one wooden pew and its equivalent number of banquet chairs. Sixty-four percent (64%) of the churches have not had a change of seat type while the remaining 36% have had a change of seat type. The results also revealed that 96% of respondents were comfortable with their various seat types (wooden pews and plastic chairs) and just 2% of both Orthodox and Pentecostal Church members were not comfortable with their seat types. Though there is significant difference in the cost of production of one wooden pew and its equivalent number of chairs, plastic chairs will overshoot the price of pews over time. Subsequently, there would be need for replacement of plastic chairs in Churches. Wooden pews should be used as permanent seat type in Churches. This will prevent regular replacement of seats thereby saving cost. Keywords: Orthodox Churches, Pentecostal Churches, Wooden pews, Plastic chairs, Ergonomic

Is a Library Department Chair Essential?: The Development of the Library De- partment Chair at Central Washington University

    Get PDF
The combined position of University Archivist and Library Department Chair in the James E. Brooks Library at Central Washington University (CWU) in Ellensburg, Washington is unique and draws cu- riosity as to what other academic libraries have department chairs and what is their specific area of librarianship. This article provides a review of literature on the responsibilities of department chairs and their vitality, as well as publications specifically referencing library department chairs. A compar- ison of the CWU library department chair to another library faculty chair in the Orbis Cascade Alli- ance is also provided. The history of the chair position at Brooks Library is examined as is the makeup of the library faculty. Resources for chairs at CWU and personal strategies that have proved effective in being a leader of library faculty are described

Design of Table Chair Flexibility Products Using Antopometry Methods to Minimize Land Use

In an increasingly advanced era, allproperty or home furniture is required to have arenewable innovation and efficiency. This is becauseproperty or home furniture currently has a very largemass or size. Large furniture sizes such as chairs andtables have an average area of 500cm2. Almost 90% ofIndonesian people have tables and chairs as the contentsof their household furniture. Not only functioned athome, in restaurants, cafes, malls, offices, in parks andall places where if there is interaction between humans, there must be chairs and tables as places for interaction. But sometimes the owners of chairs and tables oftencomplain about the size of the tables and chairs, so they need a large enough area to place these two items. Theproblem that exists in society today is the narrowing ofempty land in one place. Sometimes there is homefurniture that is not ergonomic, such as a chair that istoo high, a table that is too low and so on. By using thisanthopometric method, the measurements obtainedinclude a chair along the 95th percentile 25 cm, chairlength 33 cm 95th percentile, table length 68 cm 5thpercentile, chair height 39 cm 5th percentile, table height69 cm 5th percentile, and finally lower surface height. atable of 54 cm on the 95th percentile, and it is hoped thatthe manufacture of a chair flexibility table productdesign can overcome all the problems of land limitationsthat exist in today's society

Predicting theater chair absorption from reverberation chamber measurements - comment

    Get PDF
The relationship between the measured acoustic absorption coefficient of an array of theater chairs and the ratio of the perimeter length to plan area of the array is considered. It is shown that the linear relationship measured by Bradley in a reverberation chamber and reported in ''Predicting theater chair absorption from reverberation chamber measurements'' [J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 91, 1514-1524 (1992)] is to be expected from simple theory. This means that any nonlinear influence of diffracted energy on the relationship is small. Bradley is also unduly harsh on the usefulness of a chair absorption measurement method involving screens. A sample result is given, showing that this method can predict in-situ theater chair absorption with reasonable accuracy

Supporting Department Chairs as Educational Leaders in a Polytechnic Context

    Get PDF
This Organizational Improvement Plan (OIP) presents a possible solution to improve support for department chairs at a large polytechnic institution in Canada. It takes into consideration the unique situation where chairs are often hired directly from industry with little or no background in pedagogy/andragogy or postsecondary education and do not have teaching or research duties as part of their responsibilities. More specifically, this OIP focuses on the institutional Educational Development Centre’s (EDC) role in supporting chairs and addresses the following Problem of Practice: Department chairs at this institution do not receive consistent and purposeful training to support them in their roles as leaders. By facilitating a collaborative approach through Professional Learning Communities (PLCs), combined with a formal program design process, the intention is for department chairs to help create training that will support current and incoming chairs in the area of pedagogy/andragogy. This OIP emphasizes the importance of department chair training (Craig, 2005; Filan, 1999, Gmelch & Miskin, 2011; Sirkis, 2011; Whitsett, 2007), the diversity of skills required by department chairs (Lloyd-Jones, 2012; Palmer, Hoffman-Longtin, Walvoord, Bogdewic, & Dankoski, 2015; Wolverton, Ackerman & Holt, 2005), and the lack of department chair training offered at most postsecondary institutions in North America (Filan, 1999; Gmelch & Miskin, 2011; Smith & Stewart, 1999). This OIP could be adapted to the unique contexts of other institutions to help them explore ways to better support this essential leadership group

    Warehouse of failed invention

The exhibition consisted of a new installation work, combined with sculptural and video elements. The space was initially transformed from its 'white cube' architectural state, into a warehouse storage unit. The entrance of the gallery was reduced to a single corridor, through which there were a series of false doors, obscure shaped cupboards and larger rooms. One room acted as the 'storage area', darkly lit with boxes covered in oil, another room acts as a theatrical 'prototyping' space with two conjoined chairs were tested for strength (on the outside of the installation, a two-way mirror allowed the viewer to watch others as they explored this space). A smaller viewing room within the installation, acted as a space to view the dual-video film Beacon, 2012. A part documentary film of inventions that are used for safety and when lost (signal beacons)

    And They Danced

(Excerpt) PERFORMANCE NOTES: And They Danced is designed to be played in a chancel: a very compact space. Most chancels feature several steps leading from the floor of the nave and landing on the high altar level. The staging suggested in this script depends on such steps. For example, at the opening, the players are arranged in a symmetrical grouping on at least three levels. On the top level, three men are arranged as follows: SIX in the middle, FOUR to his right, and FIVE to his left. Two of the women are on the step below: TWO stage right (in front of FOUR) and 1HREE stage left (in front of FIVE). ESTHER (ONE) is down center, a step or two in front of the group. Six simple folding chairs are arranged on three sides of the chancel area
