    Woodworking facilities: Driving efficiency through Automation applied to major process steps

    The investment scenario applied to forestry development analyzes the fundamental changes in the production structure, among other things. These changes refer to the priority development of the pulp and paper industry through the chain of large-scale woodworking facilities, where pulp, paper and cardboard manufacturing plants are the key links. Such facilities include sawmilling facilities, wood-processing factories, and timber factories. Those provide a significant economic benefit, so improving them is one of the top priorities. Considering this priority is the purpose of this article. The goal was achieved using common and scientific research methods, including mathematical modeling. Theoretical research resulted in three sets of formulas adapted for evaluating the pulpwood barking from theoretical findings on image recognition. © 2018 Authors

    Efficient Architecture of Variable Size HEVC 2D-DCT for FPGA Platforms

    This study presents a design of two-dimensional (2D) discrete cosine transform (DCT) hardware architecture dedicated for High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) in field programmable gate array (FPGA) platforms. The proposed methodology efficiently proceeds 2D-DCT computation to fit internal components and characteristics of FPGA resources. A four-stage circuit architecture is developed to implement the proposed methodology. This architecture supports variable size of DCT computation, including 4×4, 8×8, 16×16, and 32×32. The proposed architecture has been implemented in System Verilog and synthesized in various FPGA platforms. Compared with existing related works in literature, this proposed architecture demonstrates significant advantages in hardware cost and performance improvement. The proposed architecture is able to sustain 4K@30fps ultra high definition (UHD) TV real-time encoding applications with a reduction of 31-64% in hardware cost

    A novel dissemination protocol to deploy opportunistic services in federated satellite systems

    The Earth Observation community is demanding new satellite applications that cover the need of monitoring different areas with high spatial resolution and short revisit times. These applications will generate huge amounts of data, and thus improvements in the downlink capacity are mandatory. Distributed Satellite Systems have emerged as a moderate-risk and cost-effective solution to meet these new requirements. These systems are groups of satellites that share a global and common objective. One of these systems are the Federated Satellite Systems, which rely on the collaboration between satellites that share unused resources, such as memory storage, computing capabilities, or downlink opportunities. In the same context, the Internet of Satellites paradigm expands the FSS concept to a multi-hop scenario, without predefining a satellite system architecture, and deploying temporal satellite networks. The basis of both concepts is the offer of unused satellite resources as services, being necessary that satellites notify their availability to other satellites that composes the system. This work presents the Opportunistic Service Avaliability Dissemination Protocol, which allows a satellite to publish an available service to be consumed by others. Details of the protocol behavior, and packet formats are presented as part of the protocol definition. Additionally, without loss of generality, the protocol has been verified in a realistic scenario composed of Earth Observation satellites, and the Telesat mega-constellation as a network backbone.
