    New Approximability Results for the Robust k-Median Problem

    We consider a robust variant of the classical kk-median problem, introduced by Anthony et al. \cite{AnthonyGGN10}. In the \emph{Robust kk-Median problem}, we are given an nn-vertex metric space (V,d)(V,d) and mm client sets { Si⊆V }i=1m\set{S_i \subseteq V}_{i=1}^m. The objective is to open a set F⊆VF \subseteq V of kk facilities such that the worst case connection cost over all client sets is minimized; in other words, minimize max⁥i∑v∈Sid(F,v)\max_{i} \sum_{v \in S_i} d(F,v). Anthony et al.\ showed an O(log⁥m)O(\log m) approximation algorithm for any metric and APX-hardness even in the case of uniform metric. In this paper, we show that their algorithm is nearly tight by providing Ω(log⁥m/log⁥log⁥m)\Omega(\log m/ \log \log m) approximation hardness, unless NP⊆⋂ή>0DTIME(2nÎŽ){\sf NP} \subseteq \bigcap_{\delta >0} {\sf DTIME}(2^{n^{\delta}}). This hardness result holds even for uniform and line metrics. To our knowledge, this is one of the rare cases in which a problem on a line metric is hard to approximate to within logarithmic factor. We complement the hardness result by an experimental evaluation of different heuristics that shows that very simple heuristics achieve good approximations for realistic classes of instances.Comment: 19 page

    When are Stochastic Transition Systems Tameable?

    A decade ago, Abdulla, Ben Henda and Mayr introduced the elegant concept of decisiveness for denumerable Markov chains [1]. Roughly speaking, decisiveness allows one to lift most good properties from finite Markov chains to denumerable ones, and therefore to adapt existing verification algorithms to infinite-state models. Decisive Markov chains however do not encompass stochastic real-time systems, and general stochastic transition systems (STSs for short) are needed. In this article, we provide a framework to perform both the qualitative and the quantitative analysis of STSs. First, we define various notions of decisiveness (inherited from [1]), notions of fairness and of attractors for STSs, and make explicit the relationships between them. Then, we define a notion of abstraction, together with natural concepts of soundness and completeness, and we give general transfer properties, which will be central to several verification algorithms on STSs. We further design a generic construction which will be useful for the analysis of {\omega}-regular properties, when a finite attractor exists, either in the system (if it is denumerable), or in a sound denumerable abstraction of the system. We next provide algorithms for qualitative model-checking, and generic approximation procedures for quantitative model-checking. Finally, we instantiate our framework with stochastic timed automata (STA), generalized semi-Markov processes (GSMPs) and stochastic time Petri nets (STPNs), three models combining dense-time and probabilities. This allows us to derive decidability and approximability results for the verification of these models. Some of these results were known from the literature, but our generic approach permits to view them in a unified framework, and to obtain them with less effort.     On the Usefulness of Predicates

    Motivated by the pervasiveness of strong inapproximability results for Max-CSPs, we introduce a relaxed notion of an approximate solution of a Max-CSP. In this relaxed version, loosely speaking, the algorithm is allowed to replace the constraints of an instance by some other (possibly real-valued) constraints, and then only needs to satisfy as many of the new constraints as possible. To be more precise, we introduce the following notion of a predicate PP being \emph{useful} for a (real-valued) objective QQ: given an almost satisfiable Max-PP instance, there is an algorithm that beats a random assignment on the corresponding Max-QQ instance applied to the same sets of literals. The standard notion of a nontrivial approximation algorithm for a Max-CSP with predicate PP is exactly the same as saying that PP is useful for PP itself. We say that PP is useless if it is not useful for any QQ. This turns out to be equivalent to the following pseudo-randomness property: given an almost satisfiable instance of Max-PP it is hard to find an assignment such that the induced distribution on kk-bit strings defined by the instance is not essentially uniform. Under the Unique Games Conjecture, we give a complete and simple characterization of useful Max-CSPs defined by a predicate: such a Max-CSP is useless if and only if there is a pairwise independent distribution supported on the satisfying assignments of the predicate. It is natural to also consider the case when no negations are allowed in the CSP instance, and we derive a similar complete characterization (under the UGC) there as well. Finally, we also include some results and examples shedding additional light on the approximability of certain Max-CSPs

    Approximation Complexity of Maximum A Posteriori Inference in Sum-Product Networks

    We discuss the computational complexity of approximating maximum a posteriori inference in sum-product networks. We first show NP-hardness in trees of height two by a reduction from maximum independent set; this implies non-approximability within a sublinear factor. We show that this is a tight bound, as we can find an approximation within a linear factor in networks of height two. We then show that, in trees of height three, it is NP-hard to approximate the problem within a factor 2f(n)2^{f(n)} for any sublinear function ff of the size of the input nn. Again, this bound is tight, as we prove that the usual max-product algorithm finds (in any network) approximations within factor 2c⋅n2^{c \cdot n} for some constant c<1c < 1. Last, we present a simple algorithm, and show that it provably produces solutions at least as good as, and potentially much better than, the max-product algorithm. We empirically analyze the proposed algorithm against max-product using synthetic and realistic networks.Comment: 18 page
