Interactive real-time three-dimensional visualisation of virtual textiles
Virtual textile databases provide a cost-efficient alternative to the use of existing hardcover
sample catalogues. By taking advantage of the high performance features offered by the
latest generation of programmable graphics accelerator boards, it is possible to combine
photometric stereo methods with 3D visualisation methods to implement a virtual textile
database. In this thesis, we investigate and combine rotation invariant texture retrieval with
interactive visualisation techniques.
We use a 3D surface representation that is a generic data representation that allows us to
combine real-time interactive 3D visualisation methods with present day texture retrieval
methods. We begin by investigating the most suitable data format for the 3D surface
representation and identify relief-mapping combined with Bézier surfaces as the most
suitable 3D surface representations for our needs, and go on to describe how these
representation can be combined for real-time rendering. We then investigate ten different
methods of implementing rotation invariant texture retrieval using feature vectors. These
results show that first order statistics in the form of histogram data are very effective for
discriminating colour albedo information, while rotation invariant gradient maps are
effective for distinguishing between different types of micro-geometry using either first or

Abstract
In this thesis, we present a fast approach to automated
generation of textured 3D city models with both high details at
ground level and complete coverage for birds-eye view.
A ground-based facade model is acquired by driving a vehicle
equipped with two 2D laser scanners and a digital camera under
normal traffic conditions on public roads. One scanner is
mounted horizontally and is used to determine the approximate
component of relative motion along the movement of the
acquisition vehicle via scan matching; the obtained relative
motion estimates are concatenated to form an initial path.
Assuming that features such as buildings are visible from both
ground-based and airborne view, this initial path is globally
corrected by Monte-Carlo Localization techniques using an aerial
photograph or a Digital Surface Model as a global map. The
second scanner is mounted vertically and is used to capture the
3D shape of the building facades. Applying a series of automated
processing steps, a texture-mapped 3D facade model is
reconstructed from the vertical laser scans and the camera
images. In order to obtain an airborne model containing the roof
and terrain shape complementary to the facade model, a Digital
Surface Model is created from airborne laser scans, then
triangulated, and finally texturemapped with aerial imagery.
Finally, the facade model and the airborne model are fused
to one single model usable for both walk- and fly-thrus. The
developed algorithms are evaluated on a large data set acquired
in downtown Berkeley, and the results are shown and discussed
Compression, Modeling, and Real-Time Rendering of Realistic Materials and Objects
The realism of a scene basically depends on the quality of the geometry, the
illumination and the materials that are used. Whereas many sources for
the creation of three-dimensional geometry exist and numerous algorithms
for the approximation of global illumination were presented, the acquisition
and rendering of realistic materials remains a challenging problem.
Realistic materials are very important in computer graphics, because
they describe the reflectance properties of surfaces, which are based on the
interaction of light and matter. In the real world, an enormous diversity of
materials can be found, comprising very different properties. One important
objective in computer graphics is to understand these processes, to formalize
them and to finally simulate them.
For this purpose various analytical models do already exist, but their
parameterization remains difficult as the number of parameters is usually
very high. Also, they fail for very complex materials that occur in the real
world. Measured materials, on the other hand, are prone to long acquisition
time and to huge input data size. Although very efficient statistical
compression algorithms were presented, most of them do not allow for editability,
such as altering the diffuse color or mesostructure. In this thesis,
a material representation is introduced that makes it possible to edit these
features. This makes it possible to re-use the acquisition results in order to
easily and quickly create deviations of the original material. These deviations
may be subtle, but also substantial, allowing for a wide spectrum of
material appearances.
The approach presented in this thesis is not based on compression, but on
a decomposition of the surface into several materials with different reflection
properties. Based on a microfacette model, the light-matter interaction is
represented by a function that can be stored in an ordinary two-dimensional
texture. Additionally, depth information, local rotations, and the diffuse
color are stored in these textures. As a result of the decomposition, some
of the original information is inevitably lost, therefore an algorithm for the
efficient simulation of subsurface scattering is presented as well.
Another contribution of this work is a novel perception-based simplification
metric that includes the material of an object. This metric comprises
features of the human visual system, for example trichromatic color
perception or reduced resolution. The proposed metric allows for a more
aggressive simplification in regions where geometric metrics do not simplif
Projector-Based Augmentation
Projector-based augmentation approaches hold the potential of combining the advantages of well-establishes spatial virtual reality and spatial augmented reality. Immersive, semi-immersive and augmented visualizations can be realized in everyday environments – without the need for special projection screens and dedicated display configurations. Limitations of mobile devices, such as low resolution and small field of view, focus constrains, and ergonomic issues can be overcome in many cases by the utilization of projection technology. Thus, applications that do not require mobility can benefit from efficient spatial augmentations. Examples range from edutainment in museums (such as storytelling projections onto natural stone walls in historical buildings) to architectural visualizations (such as augmentations of complex illumination simulations or modified surface materials in real building structures). This chapter describes projector-camera methods and multi-projector techniques that aim at correcting geometric aberrations, compensating local and global radiometric effects, and improving focus properties of images projected onto everyday surfaces

High-quality dense stereo vision for whole body imaging and obesity assessment
textThe prevalence of obesity has necessitated developing safe and convenient tools for timely assessing and monitoring this condition for a broad range of population. Three-dimensional (3D) body imaging has become a new mean for obesity assessment. Moreover, it generates body shape information that is meaningful for fitness, ergonomics, and personalized clothing. In the previous work of our lab, we developed a prototype active stereo vision system that demonstrated a potential to fulfill this goal. But the prototype required four computer projectors to cast artificial textures on the body which facilitate the stereo-matching on texture-deficient images (e.g., skin). This decreases the mobility of the system when used to collect a large population data. In addition, the resolution of the generated 3D~images is limited by both cameras and projectors available during the project. The study reported in this dissertation highlights our continued effort in improving the capability of 3Dbody imaging through simplified hardware for passive stereo and advanced computation techniques.
The system utilizes high-resolution single-lens reflex (SLR) cameras, which became widely available lately, and is configured in a two-stance design to image the front and back surfaces of a person. A total of eight cameras are used to form four pairs of stereo units. Each unit covers a quarter of the body surface. The stereo units are individually calibrated with a specific pattern to determine cameras' intrinsic and extrinsic parameters for stereo matching. The global orientation and position of each stereo unit within a common world coordinate system is calculated through a 3Dregistration step. The stereo calibration and 3Dregistration procedures do not need to be repeated for a deployed system if the cameras' relative positions have not changed. This property contributes to the portability of the system, and tremendously alleviates the maintenance task. The image acquisition time is around two seconds for a whole-body capture. The system works in an indoor environment with a moderate ambient light.
Advanced stereo computation algorithms are developed by taking advantage of high-resolution images and by tackling the ambiguity problem in stereo matching. A multi-scale, coarse-to-fine matching framework is proposed to match large-scale textures at a low resolution and refine the matched results over higher resolutions. This matching strategy reduces the complexity of the computation and avoids ambiguous matching at the native resolution. The pixel-to-pixel stereo matching algorithm follows a classic, four-step strategy which consists of matching cost computation, cost aggregation, disparity computation and disparity refinement.
The system performance has been evaluated on mannequins and human subjects in comparison with other measurement methods. It was found that the geometrical measurements from reconstructed 3Dbody models, including body circumferences and whole volume, are highly repeatable and consistent with manual and other instrumental measurements (CV 0.99). The agreement of percent body fat (%BF) estimation on human subjects between stereo and dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) was found to be improved over the previous active stereo system, and the limits of agreement with 95% confidence were reduced by half. Our achieved %BF estimation agreement is among the lowest ones of other comparative studies with commercialized air displacement plethysmography (ADP) and DEXA. In practice, %BF estimation through a two-component model is sensitive to body volume measurement, and the estimation of lung volume could be a source of variation.
