Clinical Natural Language Processing in languages other than English: opportunities and challenges

Background: Natural language processing applied to clinical text or aimed at a clinical outcome has been thriving in recent years. This paper offers the first broad overview of clinical Natural Language Processing (NLP) for languages other than English. Recent studies are summarized to offer insights and outline opportunities in this area. Main Body We envision three groups of intended readers: (1) NLP researchers leveraging experience gained in other languages, (2) NLP researchers faced with establishing clinical text processing in a language other than English, and (3) clinical informatics researchers and practitioners looking for resources in their languages in order to apply NLP techniques and tools to clinical practice and/or investigation. We review work in clinical NLP in languages other than English. We classify these studies into three groups: (i) studies describing the development of new NLP systems or components de novo, (ii) studies describing the adaptation of NLP architectures developed for English to another language, and (iii) studies focusing on a particular clinical application. Conclusion: We show the advantages and drawbacks of each method, and highlight the appropriate application context. Finally, we identify major challenges and opportunities that will affect the impact of NLP on clinical practice and public health studies in a context that encompasses English as well as other languages

Recognition and normalization of temporal expressions in Serbian medical narratives

The temporal dimension emerges as one of the essential concepts in the field of medicine, providing a basis for the proper interpretation and understanding of medically relevant information, often recorded only in unstructured texts. Automatic processing of temporal expressions involves their identification and formalization in a language understandable to computers. This paper aims to apply the existing system for automatic processing of temporal expressions in Serbian natural language texts to medical narrative texts, to evaluate the system’s efficiency in recognition and normalization of temporal expressions and to determine the degree of necessary adaptation according to the characteristics and requirements of the medical domain

Automated machine learning for healthcare and clinical notes analysis

Machine learning (ML) has been slowly entering every aspect of our lives and its positive impact has been astonishing. To accelerate embedding ML in more applications and incorporating it in real-world scenarios, automated machine learning (AutoML) is emerging. The main purpose of AutoML is to provide seamless integration of ML in various industries, which will facilitate better outcomes in everyday tasks. In healthcare, AutoML has been already applied to easier settings with structured data such as tabular lab data. However, there is still a need for applying AutoML for interpreting medical text, which is being generated at a tremendous rate. For this to happen, a promising method is AutoML for clinical notes analysis, which is an unexplored research area representing a gap in ML research. The main objective of this paper is to fill this gap and provide a comprehensive survey and analytical study towards AutoML for clinical notes. To that end, we first introduce the AutoML technology and review its various tools and techniques. We then survey the literature of AutoML in the healthcare industry and discuss the developments specific to clinical settings, as well as those using general AutoML tools for healthcare applications. With this background, we then discuss challenges of working with clinical notes and highlight the benefits of developing AutoML for medical notes processing. Next, we survey relevant ML research for clinical notes and analyze the literature and the field of AutoML in the healthcare industry. Furthermore, we propose future research directions and shed light on the challenges and opportunities this emerging field holds. With this, we aim to assist the community with the implementation of an AutoML platform for medical notes, which if realized can revolutionize patient outcomes

Mediator – enabler for successful digital health care

It is no news that as in any other field of industry, digitalization is changing health care. This change is ongoing and profound as it affects every aspect imaginable; from provisioning to funding, and from roles to responsibilities. The magnitude of this change is such that some label it as the ‘health care revolution’. Not all individuals are ready for this ‘revolution’. Some rebel against it while others are simply not able to cope with it. Regardless of the underlying reason, it can be estimated that in the near future, roughly 10 % of the population in the OECD countries will drift outside the reach of the modern electronic health care services. These individuals, the digital orphan, need to be brought back in order to prevent the future of health care from becoming more marginalized and discriminatory than it is today. Mediators, individuals in the crux of health care and technology, are one way to prevent this unwelcome eventuality from coming true. In the following, the focus of examination is on the mediators and mediation. The role of a mediator is critically examined from different perspectives, and a framework for mediation is presented. &nbsp

General report & recommendations in predictive, preventive and personalised medicine 2012: white paper of the European Association for Predictive, Preventive and Personalised Medicine

This report is the collective product of word-leading experts working in the branches of integrative medicine by predictive, preventive and personalised medicine (PPPM) under the coordination of the European Association for Predictive, Preventive and Personalised Medicine. The general report has been prepared as the consortium document proposed at the EPMA World Congress 2011 which took place in Bonn, Germany. This forum analyzed the overall deficits and trends relevant for the top-science and daily practice in PPPM focused on the patient. Follow-up consultations resulted in a package of recommendations for consideration by research units, educators, healthcare industry, policy-makers, and funding bodies to cover the current knowledge deficit in the field and to introduce integrative approaches for advanced diagnostics, targeted prevention, treatments tailored to the person and cost-effective healthcare

Telemedicine is a rapidly evolving field as new technologies are implemented for example for the development of wireless sensors, quality data transmission. Using the Internet applications such as counseling, clinical consultation support and home care monitoring and management are more and more realized, which improves access to high level medical care in underserved areas.
