Evolutionary Networks for Multi-Behavioural Robot Control : A thesis presented in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Science in Computer Science Massey University, Albany, New Zealand
Artificial Intelligence can be applied to a wide variety of real world problems, with
varying levels of complexity; nonetheless, real world problems often demand for
capabilities that are difficult, if not impossible to achieve using a single Artificial
Intelligence algorithm. This challenge gave rise to the development of hybrid systems
that put together a combination of complementary algorithms. Hybrid approaches
come at a cost however, as they introduce additional complications for the developer,
such as how the algorithms should interact and when the independent algorithms
should be executed. This research introduces a new algorithm called Cascading
Genetic Network Programming (CGNP), which contains significant changes to the
original Genetic Network Programming. This new algorithm has the facility to
include any Artificial Intelligence algorithm into its directed graph network, as either
a judgement or processing node. CGNP introduces a novel ability for a scalable
multiple layer network, of independent instances of the CGNP algorithm itself. This
facilitates problem subdivision, independent optimisation of these underlying layers
and the ability to develop varying levels of complexity, from individual motor control
to high level dynamic role allocation systems. Mechanisms are incorporated to
prevent the child networks from executing beyond their requirement, allowing the
parent to maintain control. The ability to optimise any data within each node
is added, allowing for general purpose node development and therefore allowing
node reuse in a wide variety of applications without modification. The abilities
of the Cascaded Genetic Network Programming algorithm are demonstrated and
proved through the development of a multi-behavioural robot soccer goal keeper, as
a testbed where an individual Artificial Intelligence system may not be sufficient.
The overall role is subdivided into three components and individually optimised
which allow the robot to pursue a target object or location, rotate towards a target
and provide basic functionality for defending a goal. These three components are
then used in a higher level network as independent nodes, to solve the overall multi-
behavioural goal keeper. Experiments show that the resulting controller defends the
goal with a success rate of 91%, after 12 hours training using a population of 400
and 60 generations
Application advances of artificial intelligence algorithms in dynamics simulation of railway vehicle
The application examples and domestic and foreign literatures using artificial intelligence algorithm for railway vehicle system dynamics simulation were reviewed. The machine learning and deep learning algorithms commonly used in railway vehicle dynamics simulation were summarized, and the application classifications of the 2 algorithms in railway vehicle system dynamics modelling and simulation were concluded and interpreted. According to railway vehicle system dynamics modelling, dynamics performance prediction and dynamics performance optimization, the advantages and limitations of applying artificial intelligence algorithms in force-elements modelling and simulation, track irregularity prediction, running stability prediction, noise prediction, crosswind safety prediction, running safety prediction, suspension optimization, wheel-rail matching optimization, structure optimization, and active and semi-active control were discussed in detail. The problems of applications of artificial intelligence algorithms in railway dynamics simulation were lack of training samples, generalization ability and interpretability. The development directions and key research contents of the interdisciplinary research between artificial intelligence and vehicle system dynamics were given. Research result shows that the hybrid modelling theory combining classical mechanics and artificial intelligence algorithms can be as a key research direction in the future. There is great potential to use the artificial intelligence algorithms to solve the random uncertainty in stochastic dynamics and improve the performance of stochastic dynamics. The artificial intelligence algorithms combinated with optimization algorithms can exploit their advantages in the dynamics performance optimization.
AI and OR in management of operations: history and trends
The last decade has seen a considerable growth in the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) for operations management with the aim of finding solutions to problems that are increasing in complexity and scale. This paper begins by setting the context for the survey through a historical perspective of OR and AI. An extensive survey of applications of AI techniques for operations management, covering a total of over 1200 papers published from 1995 to 2004 is then presented. The survey utilizes Elsevier's ScienceDirect database as a source. Hence, the survey may not cover all the relevant journals but includes a sufficiently wide range of publications to make it representative of the research in the field. The papers are categorized into four areas of operations management: (a) design, (b) scheduling, (c) process planning and control and (d) quality, maintenance and fault diagnosis. Each of the four areas is categorized in terms of the AI techniques used: genetic algorithms, case-based reasoning, knowledge-based systems, fuzzy logic and hybrid techniques. Intelligent systems in manufacturing: current developments and future prospects
Global competition and rapidly changing customer requirements are demanding increasing changes in manufacturing environments. Enterprises are required to constantly redesign their products and continuously reconfigure their manufacturing systems. Traditional approaches to manufacturing systems do not fully satisfy this new situation. Many authors have proposed that artificial intelligence will bring the flexibility and efficiency needed by manufacturing systems. This paper is a review of artificial intelligence techniques used in manufacturing systems. The paper first defines the components of a simplified intelligent manufacturing systems (IMS), the different Artificial Intelligence (AI) techniques to be considered and then shows how these AI techniques are used for the components of IMS
A Survey of Brain Inspired Technologies for Engineering
Cognitive engineering is a multi-disciplinary field and hence it is difficult
to find a review article consolidating the leading developments in the field.
The in-credible pace at which technology is advancing pushes the boundaries of
what is achievable in cognitive engineering. There are also differing
approaches to cognitive engineering brought about from the multi-disciplinary
nature of the field and the vastness of possible applications. Thus research
communities require more frequent reviews to keep up to date with the latest
trends. In this paper we shall dis-cuss some of the approaches to cognitive
engineering holistically to clarify the reasoning behind the different
approaches and to highlight their strengths and weaknesses. We shall then show
how developments from seemingly disjointed views could be integrated to achieve
the same goal of creating cognitive machines. By reviewing the major
contributions in the different fields and showing the potential for a combined
approach, this work intends to assist the research community in devising more
unified methods and techniques for developing cognitive machines
Data-driven Soft Sensors in the Process Industry
In the last two decades Soft Sensors established themselves as a valuable alternative to the traditional means for the acquisition of critical process variables, process monitoring and other tasks which are related to process control. This paper discusses characteristics of the process industry data which are critical for the development of data-driven Soft Sensors. These characteristics are common to a large number of process industry fields, like the chemical industry, bioprocess industry, steel industry, etc. The focus of this work is put on the data-driven Soft Sensors because of their growing popularity, already demonstrated usefulness and huge, though yet not completely realised, potential. A comprehensive selection of case studies covering the three most important Soft Sensor application fields, a general introduction to the most popular Soft Sensor modelling techniques as well as a discussion of some open issues in the Soft Sensor development and maintenance and their possible solutions are the main contributions of this work
Dimensions of Neural-symbolic Integration - A Structured Survey
Research on integrated neural-symbolic systems has made significant progress
in the recent past. In particular the understanding of ways to deal with
symbolic knowledge within connectionist systems (also called artificial neural
networks) has reached a critical mass which enables the community to strive for
applicable implementations and use cases. Recent work has covered a great
variety of logics used in artificial intelligence and provides a multitude of
techniques for dealing with them within the context of artificial neural
networks. We present a comprehensive survey of the field of neural-symbolic
integration, including a new classification of system according to their

User-centered visual analysis using a hybrid reasoning architecture for intensive care units
One problem pertaining to Intensive Care Unit information systems is that, in some cases, a very dense display of data can result. To ensure the overview and readability of the increasing volumes of data, some special features are required (e.g., data prioritization, clustering, and selection mechanisms) with the application of analytical methods (e.g., temporal data abstraction, principal component analysis, and detection of events). This paper addresses the problem of improving the integration of the visual and analytical methods applied to medical monitoring systems. We present a knowledge- and machine learning-based approach to support the knowledge discovery process with appropriate analytical and visual methods. Its potential benefit to the development of user interfaces for intelligent monitors that can assist with the detection and explanation of new, potentially threatening medical events. The proposed hybrid reasoning architecture provides an interactive graphical user interface to adjust the parameters of the analytical methods based on the users' task at hand. The action sequences performed on the graphical user interface by the user are consolidated in a dynamic knowledge base with specific hybrid reasoning that integrates symbolic and connectionist approaches. These sequences of expert knowledge acquisition can be very efficient for making easier knowledge emergence during a similar experience and positively impact the monitoring of critical situations.
