    Appearance Enhancement for Visually Impaired with Projector Camera Feedback

    Visually impaired is a common problem for human life in the world wide. The projector-based AR technique has ability to change appearance of real object, and it can help to improve visibility for visually impaired. We propose a new framework for the appearance enhancement with the projector camera system that employed model predictive controller. This framework enables arbitrary image processing such as photo-retouch software in the real world and it helps to improve visibility for visually impaired. In this article, we show the appearance enhancement result of Peli's method and Wolffshon's method for the low vision, Jefferson's method for color vision deficiencies. Through experiment results, the potential of our method to enhance the appearance for visually impaired was confirmed as same as appearance enhancement for the digital image and television viewing

    Multi-touch interactions for model-based sonification

    Presented at the 15th International Conference on Auditory Display (ICAD2009), Copenhagen, Denmark, May 18-22, 2009This paper presents novel interaction modes for Model-Based Soni- fication (MBS) via a multi-touch interface. We first lay out details about the constructed multi-touch surface. This is followed by a description of the Data Sonogram Sonification Model and how it is implemented using the system. Modifications from the original sonification model such as the limited space scans are described and discussed with sonification examples. Videos showing exam- ples of interaction are provided for various data sets. Beyond Data Sonograms, the presented system provides a basis for the imple- mentation of known and novel sonification models. We discuss the available interaction modes with multi-touch surfaces and how these interactions can be profitably used to control spatial and non- spatial sonification models

    Review: Development and technical design of tangible user interfaces in wide-field areas of application

    A tangible user interface or TUI connects physical objects and digital interfaces. It is more interactive and interesting for users than a classic graphic user interface. This article presents a descriptive overview of TUI's real-world applications sorted into ten main application areas-teaching of traditional subjects, medicine and psychology, programming, database development, music and arts, modeling of 3D objects, modeling in architecture, literature and storytelling, adjustable TUI solutions, and commercial TUI smart toys. The paper focuses on TUI's technical solutions and a description of technical constructions that influences the applicability of TUIs in the real world. Based on the review, the technical concept was divided into two main approaches: the sensory technical concept and technology based on a computer vision algorithm. The sensory technical concept is processed to use wireless technology, sensors, and feedback possibilities in TUI applications.     Unifying terrain awareness for the visually impaired through real-time semantic segmentation.

    Navigational assistance aims to help visually-impaired people to ambulate the environment safely and independently. This topic becomes challenging as it requires detecting a wide variety of scenes to provide higher level assistive awareness. Vision-based technologies with monocular detectors or depth sensors have sprung up within several years of research. These separate approaches have achieved remarkable results with relatively low processing time and have improved the mobility of impaired people to a large extent. However, running all detectors jointly increases the latency and burdens the computational resources. In this paper, we put forward seizing pixel-wise semantic segmentation to cover navigation-related perception needs in a unified way. This is critical not only for the terrain awareness regarding traversable areas, sidewalks, stairs and water hazards, but also for the avoidance of short-range obstacles, fast-approaching pedestrians and vehicles. The core of our unification proposal is a deep architecture, aimed at attaining efficient semantic understanding. We have integrated the approach in a wearable navigation system by incorporating robust depth segmentation. A comprehensive set of experiments prove the qualified accuracy over state-of-the-art methods while maintaining real-time speed. We also present a closed-loop field test involving real visually-impaired users, demonstrating the effectivity and versatility of the assistive framework

    This chapter presents a research towards implementation of a computer vision system for markerless skeleton tracking in therapy of gross motor skill disorders in children suffering from mild cognitive impairment. The proposed system is based on a low-cost 3D sensor and a skeleton tracking software. The envisioned architecture is scalable in the sense that the system may be used as a stand-alone assistive tool for tracking the effects of therapy or it may be integrated with an advanced autonomous conversational agent to maintain the spatial attention of the child and to increase her motivation to undergo a long-term therapy
