An apparatus is disclosed for capturing and holding a rod, bar or similar member; the apparatus having in one aspect a body member with a recess therein and a hook extending from the body member, the hook and recess defining a capture envelope for receiving and confining the rod, etc. In one aspect such an apparatus is disclosed in which the hook is movable with respect to the body member to vary the size of the capture envelope, both to initially facilitate emplacement of the apparatus about the rod, etc., and then to provide for tightening of the apparatus about the rod, etc., if desired

Nozzle extraction process and handlemeter for measuring handle

    Get PDF
Method and apparatus for quantitatively measuring the handle of fabrics and other flexible materials is presented. Handle is that term used to refer to the qualities of drapability, flexibility, compressibility, foldability, stretchability, pliability, etc., possessed by fabrics and other flexible materials. In the present invention the handle of a material sample is quantified by measuring the force required to draw the sample through an orifice and expressing the resultant extractive force as a function of test apparatus geometry and the amount of sample drawn through the orifice to arrive at quantitative measure of handle, to be defined as handle modulus, for the sample in question

Results of the study of the vestibular apparatus and the functions of the perception of space in cosmonauts (pre- and post-flight observations)

The effect of the set of space flight factors caused a change in the activity of the vestibular apparatus and the spatial perception function. More significant and longer shifts were observed during expeditions of great duration. The detected disorders (increase in reactivity of the otolithic apparatus, decrease in sensitivity of the cupula receptor, deterioration in the perception accuracy, etc.) had a definite tendency to be restored. The primary damage to the otolithic reflex (changes were found in practically all the subjects) is probably caused by the specific effect of zero gravitation, and apparently, may be one of the trigger mechanisms for discrepancy in the activity of the sensory systems, disorders in the correcting function of the cerebellum, and central vestibular formations

Process And Apparatus For Removing Water From Materials Using Oscillatory Flow-reversing Gaseous Media

A process and an apparatus for removing water from a material are disclosed. The material can be selected from the group consisting of fibrous webs, textiles, plastics, non-woven webs, building materials, or any combination thereof, and may comprise an agricultural product, a food product, a pharmaceutical product, a biotechnology product, etc. The process comprises providing a material; providing an oscillatory flow-reversing impingement gaseous media having predetermined frequency; providing a gas-distributing system designed to emit the oscillatory flow-reversing impingement gas onto the material; and impinging the oscillatory flow-reversing gas onto the material, thereby removing moisture from the material. The apparatus comprises a support to receive the material and to carry said material in a machine direction; a pulse generator producing oscillatory flow-reversing air or gas; and a gas-distributing system in fluid communication with the pulse generator for delivering the oscillatory flow-reversing gas to the material, wherein the gas-distributing system terminates with at least one discharge outlet juxtaposed with the support.Institute Of Paper Science And Technology, Inc

ROTUNDE - A Smart Meeting Cinematography Initiative: Tools, Datasets, and Benchmarks for Cognitive Interpretation and Control

We construe smart meeting cinematography with a focus on professional situations such as meetings and seminars, possibly conducted in a distributed manner across socio-spatially separated groups. The basic objective in smart meeting cinematography is to interpret professional interactions involving people, and automatically produce dynamic recordings of discussions, debates, presentations etc in the presence of multiple communication modalities. Typical modalities include gestures (e.g., raising one's hand for a question, applause), voice and interruption, electronic apparatus (e.g., pressing a button), movement (e.g., standing-up, moving around) etc. ROTUNDE, an instance of smart meeting cinematography concept, aims to: (a) develop functionality-driven benchmarks with respect to the interpretation and control capabilities of human-cinematographers, real-time video editors, surveillance personnel, and typical human performance in everyday situations; (b) Develop general tools for the commonsense cognitive interpretation of dynamic scenes from the viewpoint of visuo-spatial cognition centred perceptual narrativisation. Particular emphasis is placed on declarative representations and interfacing mechanisms that seamlessly integrate within large-scale cognitive (interaction) systems and companion technologies consisting of diverse AI sub-components. For instance, the envisaged tools would provide general capabilities for high-level commonsense reasoning about space, events, actions, change, and interaction.Comment: Appears in AAAI-2013 Workshop on: Space, Time, and Ambient Intelligence (STAMI 2013

CASTOR: Centauro and Strange Object Research in nucleus-nucleus collisions at LHC

    Get PDF
We describe the CASTOR detector designed to probe the very forward, baryon-rich rapidity region in nucleus-nucleus collisions at the LHC. We present a phenomenological model describing the formation of a QGP fireball in a high baryochemical potential environment, and its subsequent decay into baryons and strangelets. The model explains Centauros and the long-penetrating component and makes predictions for the LHC. Simulations of Centauro-type events were done. To study the response of the apparatus to new effects different exotic species (DCC, Centauros, strangelets etc.) were passed through the deep calorimeter. The energy deposition pattern in the calorimeter appears to be a new clear signature of the QGP.Comment: Talk given by E. Gladysz-Dziadus for the CASTOR group, Intern. By means of a projection apparatus the application of the methods of chemical microscopy to the teaching of general chemistry were illustrated. The simpler types of equipment necessary were shown. The use of the optical methods were shown in the teaching of such things as allotropy and transition temperatures, formation of stable and unstable double salts, formation of solid solutions, eutectics, etc., tests for purity and tests for identity. The teaching of important optical properties of matter by means of simple polarization apparatus was demonstrated
