    Modeling and simulation of routing protocol for ad hoc networks combining queuing network analysis and ANT colony algorithms

    The field of Mobile Ad hoc Networks (MANETs) has gained an important part of the interest of researchers and become very popular in last few years. MANETs can operate without fixed infrastructure and can survive rapid changes in the network topology. They can be studied formally as graphs in which the set of edges varies in time. The main method for evaluating the performance of MANETs is simulation. Our thesis presents a new adaptive and dynamic routing algorithm for MANETs inspired by the Ant Colony Optimization (ACO) algorithms in combination with network delay analysis. Ant colony optimization algorithms have all been inspired by a specific foraging behavior of ant colonies which are able to find, if not the shortest, at least a very good path connecting the colony’s nest with a source of food. Our evaluation of MANETs is based on the evaluation of the mean End-to-End delay to send a packet from source to destination node through a MANET. We evaluated the mean End-to-End delay as one of the most important performance evaluation metrics in computer networks. Finally, we evaluate our proposed ant algorithm by a comparative study with respect to one of the famous On-Demand (reactive) routing protocols called Ad hoc On-Demand Distance Vector (AODV) protocol. The evaluation shows that, the ant algorithm provides a better performance by reducing the mean End-to-End delay than the AODV algorithm. We investigated various simulation scenarios with different node density and pause times. Our new algorithm gives good results under certain conditions such as, increasing the pause time and decreasing node density. The scenarios that are applied for evaluating our routing algorithm have the following assumptions: 2-D rectangular area, no obstacles, bi-directional links, fixed number of nodes operate for the whole simulation time and nodes movements are performed according to the Random Waypoint Mobility (RWM) or the Boundless Simulation Area Mobility (BSAM) model.     Network management and Routing is supportively done by performing with the nodes, due to infrastructure-less nature of the network in Ad hoc networks or MANET. The nodes are maintained itself from the functioning of the network, for that reason the MANET security challenges several defects. Routing process and Scheduling is a significant idea to enhance the security in MANET. Other than, scheduling has been recognized to be a key issue for implementing throughput/capacity optimization in Ad hoc networks. Designed underneath conventional (LT) light tailed assumptions, traffic fundamentally faces Heavy-tailed (HT) assumption of the validity of scheduling algorithms. Scheduling policies are utilized for communication networks such as Max-Weight, backpressure and ACO, which are provably throughput optimality and the Pareto frontier of the feasible throughput region under maximal throughput vector. In wireless ad-hoc network, the issue of routing and optimal scheduling performs with time varying channel reliability and multiple traffic streams. Depending upon the security issues within MANETs in this paper presents a comparative analysis of existing scheduling policies based on their performance to progress the delay performance in most scenarios.     Emergence in the security of protocols for mobile ad-hoc networks

    This thesis is concerned with the study of secure wireless routing protocols, which have been deployed for the purpose of exchanging information in an adhoc networking enviromnent. A discrete event simulator is developed, utilising an adaptive systems modelling approach and emergence that aims to assess networking protocols in the presence of adversarial behaviour. The model is used in conjunction with the characteristics that routing protocols have and also a number of cryptographic primitives that can be deployed in order to safeguard the information being exchanged. It is shown that both adversarial behaviour, as well as protocol descriptions can be described in a way that allows for them to be treated as input on the machine level. Within the system, the output generated selects the fittest protocol design capable of withstanding one or more particular type of attacks. As a result, a number of new and improved protocol specifications are presented and benchmarked against conventional metrics, such as throughput, latency and delivery criteria. From this process, an architecture for designing wireless routing protocols based on a number of security criteria is presented, whereupon the decision of using particular characteristics in a specification has been passed onto the machine level

    Machine Learning for Unmanned Aerial System (UAS) Networking

    Fueled by the advancement of 5G new radio (5G NR), rapid development has occurred in many fields. Compared with the conventional approaches, beamforming and network slicing enable 5G NR to have ten times decrease in latency, connection density, and experienced throughput than 4G long term evolution (4G LTE). These advantages pave the way for the evolution of Cyber-physical Systems (CPS) on a large scale. The reduction of consumption, the advancement of control engineering, and the simplification of Unmanned Aircraft System (UAS) enable the UAS networking deployment on a large scale to become feasible. The UAS networking can finish multiple complex missions simultaneously. However, the limitations of the conventional approaches are still a big challenge to make a trade-off between the massive management and efficient networking on a large scale. With 5G NR and machine learning, in this dissertation, my contributions can be summarized as the following: I proposed a novel Optimized Ad-hoc On-demand Distance Vector (OAODV) routing protocol to improve the throughput of Intra UAS networking. The novel routing protocol can reduce the system overhead and be efficient. To improve the security, I proposed a blockchain scheme to mitigate the malicious basestations for cellular connected UAS networking and a proof-of-traffic (PoT) to improve the efficiency of blockchain for UAS networking on a large scale. Inspired by the biological cell paradigm, I proposed the cell wall routing protocols for heterogeneous UAS networking. With 5G NR, the inter connections between UAS networking can strengthen the throughput and elasticity of UAS networking. With machine learning, the routing schedulings for intra- and inter- UAS networking can enhance the throughput of UAS networking on a large scale. The inter UAS networking can achieve the max-min throughput globally edge coloring. I leveraged the upper and lower bound to accelerate the optimization of edge coloring. This dissertation paves a way regarding UAS networking in the integration of CPS and machine learning. The UAS networking can achieve outstanding performance in a decentralized architecture. Concurrently, this dissertation gives insights into UAS networking on a large scale. These are fundamental to integrating UAS and National Aerial System (NAS), critical to aviation in the operated and unmanned fields. The dissertation provides novel approaches for the promotion of UAS networking on a large scale. The proposed approaches extend the state-of-the-art of UAS networking in a decentralized architecture. All the alterations can contribute to the establishment of UAS networking with CPS

    Including context in a routing algorithm for the internet of things

This scenario will provide room for a large set of new applications, however the network connections of an enormous set of nodes, which can be connected and disconnected, can move around and which have limitations with regards to their processing and communication capabilities, raises the need for the development of new message routing algorithms, different from those being in use today. In this thesis, a contribution is made towards the development of this type of algorithms. In particular, the idea which is tested is whether routing algorithms can improve their performance at various levels, such as, message delivery time, number of messages lost, power consumption, etc., if in the routing decisions these algorithms can make use of the concept of “Context”. Within the framework of this thesis, the “Context” is the organized collection of information which the routing algorithm collects from the environment surrounding the network nodes, and which allows it to make better routing decisions. This information can be related to low-level issues, such as, node location, power required to send a message, etc., as well as, with constraints related to the application, such as, message priority, maximum delivery time, etc. In order to evaluate this approach, this thesis proposes a routing algorithm called C-AODV. As the name suggests, it is based on the ADOV algorithm, however it is modified in several aspects; in particular, the possibility of using information collected from the context can be utilized to improve message routing. In order to test the proposed solution, several tests were performed on the NS-3 simulator which allowed the evaluation of the algorithm functionalities. The tests performed indicate that the proposed solution is valid

    ANTMANET: a novel routing protocol for mobile ad-hoc networks based on ant colony optimisation

    The core aim of this research is to present “ANTMANET” a novel routing protocol for Mobile Ad-Hoc networks. The proposed protocol aims to reduce the network overhead and delay introduced by node mobility in MANETs. There are two techniques embedded in this protocol, the “Local Zone” technique and the “North Neighbour” Table. They take an advantage of the fact that the nodes can obtain their location information by any means to reduce the network overhead during the route discovery phase and reduced the size of the routing table to guarantee faster convergence. ANTMANET is a hybrid Ant Colony Optimisation-based (ACO) routing protocol. ACO is a Swarm Intelligence (SI) routing algorithm that is well known for its high-quality performance compared to other distributed routing algorithms such as Link State and Distance Vector. ANTMANET has been benchmarked in various scenarios against the ACO routing protocol ANTHOCNET and several standard routing protocols including the Ad-Hoc On-Demand Distance Vector (AODV), Landmark Ad-Hoc Routing (LANMAR), and Dynamic MANET on Demand (DYMO). Performance metrics such as overhead, end-to-end delay, throughputs and jitter were used to evaluate ANTMANET performance. Experiments were performed using the QualNet simulator. A benchmark test was conducted to evaluate the performance of an ANTMANET network against an ANTHOCNET network, with both protocols benchmarked against AODV as an established MANET protocol. ANTMANET has demonstrated a notable performance edge when the core algorithm has been optimised using the novel adaptation method that is proposed in this thesis. Based on the simulation results, the proposed protocol has shown 5% less End-to-End delay than ANTHOCNET. In regard to network overhead, the proposed protocol has shown 20% less overhead than ANTHOCNET. In terms of comparative throughputs ANTMANET in its finest performance has delivered 25% more packets than ANTHOCNET. The overall validation results indicate that the proposed protocol was successful in reducing the network overhead and delay in high and low mobility speeds when compared with the AODV, DMO and LANMAR protocols. ANTMANET achieved at least a 45% less delay than AODV, 60% less delay than DYMO and 55% less delay than LANMAR. In terms of throughputs; ANTMANET in its best performance has delivered 35% more packets than AODV, 40% more than DYMO and 45% more than LANMAR. With respect to the network overhead results, ANTMANET has illustrated 65% less overhead than AODV, 70% less than DYMO and 60 % less than LANMAR. Regarding the Jitter, ANTMANET at its best has shown 60% less jitter than AODV, 55% jitter less than DYMO and 50% less jitter than LANMAR
