Brain macrophages in human cortical contusions as indicator of survival period
The aim of this study was to establish a morphologic time scheme with which cases of cerebral contusion with unknown survival periods can be dated. Our study of 275 cases was limited to qualitative and quantitative changes in macrophages. The appearance of macrophages and their distribution as well as their content of neutral fat, esterified cholesterol, erythrocytes, siderin, hematoidin, and ceroid were correlated with the survival period. For each cytologic criterium, the observation period, distribution-free limits of tolerance, and relative frequency of identification in different survival periods were determined, and the limits of confidence calculated. The findings permit the dating of trauma in cases with unknown survival periods. Moreover, the probability of this dating was calculated
Intensity distribution in rotational line spectra
Completely resolved Doppler-free rotational line spectra of six vibronic two-photon bands in benzene C6 H6 and C6 D6 are presented. The excited final states possess different excess energies in S1 (1567 to 2727 cm−1 ) and are embedded in dense manifolds of background states with differing densities of states (1<rho<60 1/cm−1 ). The bands are analyzed by a statistical procedure. The intensity distribution of several hundreds of lines of each band is investigated. It is found that all weakly perturbed bands display a similar, peaked intensity distribution while in strongly perturbed bands the number of lines decreases monotonically with increasing intensity. The origin of this difference is discussed in terms of coupling to the many background states. The Journal of Chemical Physics is copyrighted by The American Institute of Physics
Polar rain: Solar coronal electrons in the Earth's magnetosphere
Low energy electron measurements collected by ISEE 1 reveal the frequent presence of field-aligned fluxes of few hundred eV electrons in he geomagnetic tail lobes. In the northern tail lobe these electrons are most prominent when the interplanetary magnetic field is directed away from the Sun. This characteristic helps identify the electrons as polar rain electrons. By mapping the tail lobe velocity distribution function into the solar wind, previous suggestions that the polar rain is indeed of solar wind origin and is due to the access of electrons to the magnetotail lobe were confirmed. It was demonstrated that the moe energetic component of the polar rain is composed of electrons from the solar wind strahl - a field-aligned component of the solar wind which is difficult to measure but which is thought to be caused by the collisionless transit of hundred eV electrons from the inner solar corona to 1 AU
A scheme for coherence-enhancing diffusion filtering with optimized rotation invariance
For strongly directed anisotropic processes such as coherence-enhancing diffusion filtering it is crucial to use numerical schemes with highly accurate directional behavior. We show that this is not possible in a satisfactory way when discretizations are limited to 3 x 3 stencils. As a consequence, we investigate a novel algorithm based on 5 x 5 stencils. It utilizes recently discovered differentiation filters with optimized rotation invariance. By juxtaposing it with several common algorithms we demonstrate its superior behavior with respect to the following properties: rotation invariance, avoidance of blurring artifacts (dissipativity), and accuracy. The latter one is evaluated by deriving an analytical solution for coherence-enhancing diffusion filtering of images with circular symmetry. Furthermore, we show that the new scheme is 3 to 4 times more efficient than explicit schemes on 3 x 3 stencils. It does not require to solve linear systems of equations, and it can be easily implemented in any dimension
Scale-Space Properties of Nonstationary Iterative Regularization Methods
Most scale-space concepts have been expressed as parabolic or hyperbolic partial differential equations (PDEs). In this paper we extend our work on scale-space properties of elliptic PDEs arising from regularization methods: we study linear and nonlinear regularization methods that are applied iteratively and with different regularization parameters. For these so-called nonstationary iterative regularization techniques we clarify their relations to both isotropic diffusion filters with a scalar-valued diffusivity and anisotropic diffusion filters with a diffusion tensor. We establish scale-space properties for iterative regularization methods that are in complete accordance with those for diffusion filtering. In particular, we show that nonstationary iterative regularization satisfies a causality property in terms of a maximum-minimum principle, possesses a large class of Lyapunov functionals, and converges to a constant image as the regularization parameters tend to infinity. We also establish continuous dependence of the result with respect to the sequence of regularization parameters. Numerical experiments in two and three space dimensions are presented that illustrate the scale-space behavior of regularization methods
Experimentelle Untersuchungen am magnetischen Hybridsystem (Ga,Mn)As/MnAs
Die heutige Halbleiterelektronik und
Optoelektronik basiert auf elektrischen Strömen und Spannungen,
wobei hauptsächlich die Ladungseigenschaft der Elektronen
ausgenutzt wird. Elektronen besitzen aber auch noch eine
weitere interessante Eigenschaft, und zwar den Spin. Die Idee,
beide Eigenschaften gleichzeitig in Bauelementen auszunutzen,
ist der Grundgedanke eines neuen Forschungsgebiets innerhalb
der Physik, der sog. Spinelektronik (auch einfach Spintronik
genannt).
gesteigert. Eine der weiteren Anwendungen ist der magnetische
Arbeitsspeicher MRAM (magnetic random access memory).
Man könnte immer dort weiter arbeiten,
polarisieren, transportieren, injizieren, speichern,
aufgrund ihrer riesigen Zeemanaufspaltung besonders dazu
geeignet, Elektronen mit einer hohen Spinpolarisation in
Halbleiter zu injizieren. VMH sind also im Gegensatz zu
ferromagnetischen Metallen, die bei der Injektion grundsätzlich
nur eine geringe Spin-Polarisation erlauben, gute
Spin-Ausrichter (Spin-Aligner). Allerdings funktioniert dies

Seismic anisotropy and shear-wave splitting in lower-crustal and upper-mantle rocks from the Ivrea Zone : experimental and calculated data
International audienceTo quantify the relationships between anisotropy. S-wave splitting and tectonics, we determined the seismic properties of lower-crustal and upper-mantle rocks outcropping in the lvrea Zone (Northem Italy). We obtained P-and S-wave seismic velocities by laboratory direct velocity measurements and/or by calculations based on the modal compositions of the rocks, the lattice preferred orientations (LPOs), and the single crystal stiffness coefficients. Measured P-and S-wave velocities (6.0-7 .5 km s-1 and 3.6-4.2 km s-1) are typical of the lower crust. The P-wave anisotropy is in the range 0-l 0%. Shear-wave birefringence is in the range 0.0-0.6 km s-1 , with typical values between 0.0 and 0.2 km s-1 • In many cases, the birefringence is clearly related to fabric elements (foliation, lineation). Mafic rocks such as anorthosite or pyroxene-bearing gabbros exhibit low P-wave anisotropies (< 5%) and low shear-wave birefringences (less than 0.1 km s-1). In contrast, the seismic properties of felsic rocks such as biotite-bearing gneisses and mafic rocks such as amphibolites display high V P anisotropy (10%) and strong birefringence (0.3 km s-1). Biotite and amphibole preferred orientations clearly control seismic anisotropy and particularly shear-wave splitting. In these rocks, maximum splitting is observed in directions parallel to the foliation with the fast split shear wave polarized parallel to the foliation plane. To have an overview of the seismic properties of this lower-crustal section at a broader scale, we calculated from our data the anisotropie seismic properties of several hypothetical samples that are perhaps more representative of the regional anisotropy than each sample individually. For instance, the average lower-crustal sample displays an anisotropy of 5.5% for P waves and a birefringence around 0.14 km s I for S waves propagating parallel to the foliation. We observe little splitting for waves propagating at high angle to the foliation
