Business Intelligence and Big Data in Higher Education: Status of a Multi-Year Model Curriculum Development Effort for Business School Undergraduates, MS Graduates, and MBAs

    Get PDF
Business intelligence (BI), “big data”, and analytics solutions are being deployed in an increasing number of organizations, yet recent predictions point to severe shortages in the number of graduates prepared to work in the area. New model curriculum is needed that can properly introduce BI and analytics topics into existing curriculum. That curriculum needs to incorporate current big data developments even as new dedicated analytics programs are becoming more prominent throughout the world. This paper contributes to the BI field by providing the first BI model curriculum guidelines. It focuses on adding appropriate elective courses to existing curriculum in order to foster the development of BI skills, knowledge, and experience for undergraduate majors, master of science in business information systems degree students, and MBAs. New curricula must achieve a delicate balance between a topic’s level of coverage that is appropriate to students’ level of expertise and background, and it must reflect industry workforce needs. Our approach to model curriculum development for business intelligence courses follows the structure of Krathwohl’s (2002) revised taxonomy, and we incorporated multi-level feedback from faculty and industry experts. Overall, this was a long-term effort that resulted in model curriculum guidelines

A shared agreed-upon definition of "smart city" (SC) is not available and there is no "best formula" to follow in transforming each and every city into SC. In a broader inclusive definition, it can be described as an opportunistic concept that enhances harmony between the lives and the environment around those lives perpetually in a city by harnessing the smart technology enabling a comfortable and convenient living ecosystem paving the way towards smarter countries and the smarter planet. SCs are being implemented to combine governors, organisations, institutions, citizens, environment, and emerging technologies in a highly synergistic synchronised ecosystem in order to increase the quality of life (QoL) and enable a more sustainable future for urban life with increasing natural resource constraints. In this study, we analyse how to develop citizen- and resource-centric smarter cities based on the recent SC development initiatives with the successful use cases, future SC development plans, and many other particular SC development solutions. The main features of SC are presented in a framework fuelled by recent technological advancement, particular city requirements and dynamics. This framework - TCitySmartF 1) aims to aspire a platform that seamlessly forges engineering and technology solutions with social dynamics in a new philosophical city automation concept - socio-technical transitions, 2) incorporates many smart evolving components, best practices, and contemporary solutions into a coherent synergistic SC topology, 3) unfolds current and future opportunities in order to adopt smarter, safer and more sustainable urban environments, and 4) demonstrates a variety of insights and orchestrational directions for local governors and private sector about how to transform cities into smarter cities from the technological, social, economic and environmental point of view, particularly by both putting residents and urban dynamics at the forefront of the development with participatory planning and interaction for the robust community- and citizen-tailored services. The framework developed in this paper is aimed to be incorporated into the real-world SC development projects in Lancashire, UK

Thesis (M.B.A.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Sloan School of Management; and, (S.M.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Civil and Environmental Engineering; in conjunction with the Leaders for Manufacturing Program at MIT, 2006.Includes bibliographical references (p. 91-92).The 6D program at Intel® Corporation was set up to improve operations around capital equipment reuse, primarily in their semiconductor manufacturing facilities. The company was faced with a number of challenges, including differing work flows across multiple locations, lack of centralized work flow management, discontinuous inventory information, and other opportunities for cost reduction. The internship was set up to benchmark and explore potential for integration of best known methods, accumulated both inside and outside the company. Based on interviews, research and quantitative analysis, opportunities were identified for reuse of equipment shipping crates, improvement in warehouse inventory management, and changes in labor models to facilitate better knowledge capture and dissemination. As a result of this study Intel® Corporation may realize significant improvement in the areas mentioned in terms of cost reduction, process improvement and knowledge management. By using a flexible approach to problem identification and generating organizational interest in the improvements, recommendations were well received and should lead to eventual adoption.by Jacob Silber.S.M.M.B.A

    Get PDF
In the last decade the world of manufacturing firms is completely changed thanks to the use of new technologies. Internet of Things (IoT) is one of these technologies that not only has the potential to impact how we live, but also how the businesses are being ran. Innovative companies are adopting IoT strategies and technologies to reengineer their products and services and redefine their relationships with customers, employees and partners. The IoT market is exploding at a significant pace as consumers, businesses, and governments are recognizing the benefits of connecting devices to the Internet. The purpose of this thesis is to explore in depth the different business model utilized by different companies, with no distinction of specific industry. Moreover, this thesis aims to study the IoT platforms business models and to understand how these platforms change the market competition by leveraging the IoT technologies. In order to reach this aim a structured literature review will be performed. Then, analysing different companies by using the business model canvas approach, three business scenarios will be identified and defined, as follows: servitisation, lean and world manufacturing and, digital platforms for manufacturing. Finally, it will be applied a mathematical model in order to discuss whether and how an IoT investment can give advantage to a manufacturing firm

This project reflects an evaluation of NVIDIA Corporation, Semiconductor Company, according to ISEG´s Master in Finance final work project. This report was written in agreement with the recommendations of the CFA Institute. NVIDIA is a company that is facing a very singular moment comparing to its peers, with a 40% annual revenue growth and a valuation increase of 334,46% in the last two years. Not only NVIDIA is having an interesting financial performance but also is entering in emerging markets, such as, autonomous cars and cryptocurrencies, being a very interesting case study. Also the fascination about technology and gaming in specific was one of the reasons this company was chosen. This report was developed considering public information available until June 30th 2018 and any information or event subsequent to this date has not been considered. The price target of 303,67 was obtained from the Discounted Cash Flow method. The relative valuation method was attempted, but due to the unique situation of NVIDIA, there are not close peers following the criteria's used. This valuation suggests to a BUY recommendation, although with medium risk, since NVIDIA is consolidated in their main market, gaming, but there is some uncertainty relatively to markets like cryptocurrency and autonomous cars.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
