Analytical Evaluation of Nonlinear Effects on OFDMA Signals
As with other multicarrier modulations, OFDMA signals (Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiple Access) have large envelope fluctuations making them very prone to nonlinear distortion effects. In this paper we study the impact of nonlinear devices on OFDMA signals. We present an analytical characterization of the signals at the output of a nonlinear device that can be used for obtaining the spectral characterization of the transmitted signals, as well as the computation of the nonlinear interference levels on the received signals. It is shown that the power allocated to each user has a key impact on the nonlinear distortion effects. For this reason, we should avoid having low-power and high-power users in adjacent subcarriers. It is also shown that nonlinear distortion levels are lower when just a small fraction of the subcarriers is used (i.e., when the system load is small)
Spectral Efficiency and Energy Efficiency of OFDM Systems: Impact of Power Amplifiers and Countermeasures
In wireless communication systems, the nonlinear effect and inefficiency of
power amplifier (PA) have posed practical challenges for system designs to
achieve high spectral efficiency (SE) and energy efficiency (EE). In this
paper, we analyze the impact of PA on the SE-EE tradeoff of orthogonal
frequency division multiplex (OFDM) systems. An ideal PA that is always linear
and incurs no additional power consumption can be shown to yield a decreasing
convex function in the SE-EE tradeoff. In contrast, we show that a practical PA
has an SE-EE tradeoff that has a turning point and decreases sharply after its
maximum EE point. In other words, the Pareto-optimal tradeoff boundary of the
SE-EE curve is very narrow. A wide range of SE-EE tradeoff, however, is desired
for future wireless communications that have dynamic demand depending on the
traffic loads, channel conditions, and system applications, e.g.,
high-SE-with-low-EE for rate-limited systems and high-EE-with-low-SE for
energy-limited systems. For the SE-EE tradeoff improvement, we propose a PA
switching (PAS) technique. In a PAS transmitter, one or more PAs are switched
on intermittently to maximize the EE and deliver an overall required SE. As a
consequence, a high EE over a wide range SE can be achieved, which is verified
by numerical evaluations: with 15% SE reduction for low SE demand, the PAS
between a low power PA and a high power PA can improve EE by 323%, while a
single high power PA transmitter improves EE by only 68%.Comment: to be published, IEEE J. Sel. Areas Commu
Simultaneous Wireless Information and Power Transfer in 5G communication
Green communication technology is expected to be widely adopted in future generation
networks to improve energy efficiency and reliability of wireless communication network.
Among the green communication technologies, simultaneous wireless information and
power transfer (SWIPT) is adopted for its flexible energy harvesting technology through
the radio frequency (RF) signa lthati sused for information transmission. Even though
existing SWIPT techniques are flexible and adoptable for the wireless communication
networks, the power and time resources of the signal need to be shared between infor-
mation transmission and RF energy harvesting, and this compromises the quality of the
signal. Therefore,SWIP Ttechniques need to be designed to allow an efficient resource
allocation for communication and energy harvesting.
The goal oft his thesisis to design SWIP Ttechniques that allow efficient, reliable and
secure joint communications and power transference. A problem associated to SWIPT
techniques combined with multi carrier signals is that the increased power requirements
inherent to energy harvesting purposes can exacerbate nonlinear distortion effects at the
transmitter. Therefore, we evaluate nonlinear distortion and present feasible solutions to
mitigate the impact of nonlinear distortion effects on the performance.Another goal of
the thesisis to take advantage of the energy harvesting signals in SWIP Ttechniques for
channel estimation and security purposes.Theperformance of these SWIPT techniques is
evaluated analytically, and those results are validated by simulations. It is shownthatthe
proposed SWIPT schemes can have excellent performance, out performing conventional
SWIPT schemes.
a fiabilidade.
Embora as técnicas SWIPT existentes sejam fle-
SWIPT convencionais
Performance Analysis of Heterogeneous Feedback Design in an OFDMA Downlink with Partial and Imperfect Feedback
Current OFDMA systems group resource blocks into subband to form the basic
feedback unit. Homogeneous feedback design with a common subband size is not
aware of the heterogeneous channel statistics among users. Under a general
correlated channel model, we demonstrate the gain of matching the subband size
to the underlying channel statistics motivating heterogeneous feedback design
with different subband sizes and feedback resources across clusters of users.
Employing the best-M partial feedback strategy, users with smaller subband size
would convey more partial feedback to match the frequency selectivity. In order
to develop an analytical framework to investigate the impact of partial
feedback and potential imperfections, we leverage the multi-cluster subband
fading model. The perfect feedback scenario is thoroughly analyzed, and the
closed form expression for the average sum rate is derived for the
heterogeneous partial feedback system. We proceed to examine the effect of
imperfections due to channel estimation error and feedback delay, which leads
to additional consideration of system outage. Two transmission strategies: the
fix rate and the variable rate, are considered for the outage analysis. We also
investigate how to adapt to the imperfections in order to maximize the average
goodput under heterogeneous partial feedback.Comment: To appear in IEEE Trans. on Signal Processin
Narrowband Interference Suppression in Wireless OFDM Systems
Signal distortions in communication systems
occur between the transmitter and the receiver; these
distortions normally cause bit errors at the receiver. In
addition interference by other signals may add to the
deterioration in performance of the communication link. In
order to achieve reliable communication, the effects of the
communication channel distortion and interfering signals
must be reduced using different techniques. The aim of this
paper is to introduce the fundamentals of Orthogonal
Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) and Orthogonal
Frequency Division Multiple Access (OFDMA), to review
and examine the effects of interference in a digital data
communication link and to explore methods for mitigating
or compensating for these effects
Energy-Efficient Distributed Estimation by Utilizing a Nonlinear Amplifier
abstract: Distributed estimation uses many inexpensive sensors to compose an accurate estimate of a given parameter. It is frequently implemented using wireless sensor networks. There have been several studies on optimizing power allocation in wireless sensor networks used for distributed estimation, the vast majority of which assume linear radio-frequency amplifiers. Linear amplifiers are inherently inefficient, so in this dissertation nonlinear amplifiers are examined to gain efficiency while operating distributed sensor networks. This research presents a method to boost efficiency by operating the amplifiers in the nonlinear region of operation. Operating amplifiers nonlinearly presents new challenges. First, nonlinear amplifier characteristics change across manufacturing process variation, temperature, operating voltage, and aging. Secondly, the equations conventionally used for estimators and performance expectations in linear amplify-and-forward systems fail. To compensate for the first challenge, predistortion is utilized not to linearize amplifiers but rather to force them to fit a common nonlinear limiting amplifier model close to the inherent amplifier performance. This minimizes the power impact and the training requirements for predistortion. Second, new estimators are required that account for transmitter nonlinearity. This research derives analytically and confirms via simulation new estimators and performance expectation equations for use in nonlinear distributed estimation. An additional complication when operating nonlinear amplifiers in a wireless environment is the influence of varied and potentially unknown channel gains. The impact of these varied gains and both measurement and channel noise sources on estimation performance are analyzed in this paper. Techniques for minimizing the estimate variance are developed. It is shown that optimizing transmitter power allocation to minimize estimate variance for the most-compressed parameter measurement is equivalent to the problem for linear sensors. Finally, a method for operating distributed estimation in a multipath environment is presented that is capable of developing robust estimates for a wide range of Rician K-factors. This dissertation demonstrates that implementing distributed estimation using nonlinear sensors can boost system efficiency and is compatible with existing techniques from the literature for boosting efficiency at the system level via sensor power allocation. Nonlinear transmitters work best when channel gains are known and channel noise and receiver noise levels are low.Dissertation/ThesisPh.D. Electrical Engineering 201
EVM as generic QoS trigger for heterogeneous wieless overlay network
Fourth Generation (4G) Wireless System will integrate heterogeneous wireless
overlay systems i.e. interworking of WLAN/ GSM/ CDMA/ WiMAX/ LTE/ etc with
guaranteed Quality of Service (QoS) and Experience (QoE).QoS(E) vary from
network to network and is application sensitive. User needs an optimal mobility
solution while roaming in Overlaid wireless environment i.e. user could
seamlessly transfer his session/ call to a best available network bearing
guaranteed Quality of Experience. And If this Seamless transfer of session is
executed between two networks having different access standards then it is
called Vertical Handover (VHO). Contemporary VHO decision algorithms are based
on generic QoS metrics viz. SNR, bandwidth, jitter, BER and delay. In this
paper, Error Vector Magnitude (EVM) is proposed to be a generic QoS trigger for
VHO execution. EVM is defined as the deviation of inphase/ quadrature (I/Q)
values from ideal signal states and thus provides a measure of signal quality.
In 4G Interoperable environment, OFDM is the leading Modulation scheme (more
prone to multi-path fading). EVM (modulation error) properly characterises the
wireless link/ channel for accurate VHO decision. EVM depends on the inherent
transmission impairments viz. frequency offset, phase noise,
non-linear-impairment, skewness etc. for a given wireless link. Paper provides
an insight to the analytical aspect of EVM & measures EVM (%) for key
management subframes like association/re-association/disassociation/ probe
request/response frames. EVM relation is explored for different possible
NAV-Network Allocation Vectors (frame duration). Finally EVM is compared with
SNR, BER and investigation concludes EVM as a promising QoS trigger for OFDM
based emerging wireless standards.Comment: 12 pages, 7 figures, IJWMN 2010 august issue vol. 2, no.
Optical Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexed communication systems: analysis, design and optimization
