    Single-clock-cycle two-dimensional median filter

    Median filters are of interest to image processing due to their ability to remove impulsive noise. Conventional digital implementations of the median function, however, require multiple clock cycles, a number that is proportional to the size of the 2-D data block. We present in the Letter a complete CMOS implementation, which consumes very little power and computes the median in just one clock cycle, independently from the size of the data block

    AbstractImpulse noise in an image degrades the performances of the image processing and analysis stages. Therefore the noise removal and correction is an important processing required before performing any subsequent image processing approaches in the image data. In this paper a novel approach is proposed to remove the impulse noise from gray images. In this technique, all the pixels having gray value 0 and 255 are considered as the noisy pixels. The proposed method consists of three stages of filtering by considering the neighborhood pixels. The proposed method outperforms the Standard median Filter, Improved Fast Peer Group Filter and Modified Decision Based Unsymmetric Trimmed Median Filter

    Many nonlinear filters used in practise are stack filters. An algorithm is presented which calculates the output distribution of an arbitrary stack filter S from the disjunctive normal form (DNF) of its underlying positive Boolean function.     Color Filter Array Demosaicking Using High-Order Interpolation Techniques With a Weighted Median Filter for Sharp Color Edge Preservation

    Demosaicking is an estimation process to determine missing color values when a single-sensor digital camera is used for color image capture. In this paper, we propose a number of new methods based on the application of Taylor series and cubic spline interpolation for color filter array demosaicking. To avoid the blurring of an edge, interpolants are first estimated in four opposite directions so that no interpolation is carried out across an edge. A weighted median filter, whose filter coefficients are determined by a classifier based on an edge orientation map, is then used to produce an output from the four interpolants to preserve edges. Using the proposed methods, the original color can be faithfully reproduced with minimal amount of color artifacts even at edges

    Gibbs random field model based weight selection for the 2-D adaptive weighted median filter

    Cataloged from PDF version of article.A generalized filtering method based on the minimization of the energy of the Gibbs model is described. The well-known linear and median filters are all special cases of this method. It is shown that, with the selection of appropriate energy functions, the method can be successfully used to adapt the weights of the adaptive weighted median filter to preserve different textures within the image while eliminating the noise. The newly developed adaptive weighted median filter is based on a 3 x 3 square neighborhood structure. The weights of the pixels are adapted according to the clique energies within this neighborhood structure. The assigned energies to 2- or 3-pixel cliques are based on the local statistics within a larger estimation window. It is shown that the proposed filter performance is better compared to some well-known similar filters like the standard, separable, weighted and some adaptive weighted median filters
