Collaborative OLAP with Tag Clouds: Web 2.0 OLAP Formalism and Experimental Evaluation
Increasingly, business projects are ephemeral. New Business Intelligence
tools must support ad-lib data sources and quick perusal. Meanwhile, tag clouds
are a popular community-driven visualization technique. Hence, we investigate
tag-cloud views with support for OLAP operations such as roll-ups, slices,
dices, clustering, and drill-downs. As a case study, we implemented an
application where users can upload data and immediately navigate through its ad
hoc dimensions. To support social networking, views can be easily shared and
embedded in other Web sites. Algorithmically, our tag-cloud views are
approximate range top-k queries over spontaneous data cubes. We present
experimental evidence that iceberg cuboids provide adequate online
approximations. We benchmark several browser-oblivious tag-cloud layout
optimizations.Comment: Software at https://github.com/lemire/OLAPTagClou
Integrating OLAP and Ranking: The Ranking-Cube Methodology
Recent years have witnessed an enormous growth of data in business, industry, and Web applications. Database search often returns a large collection of results, which poses challenges to both efficient query processing and effective digest of the query results. To address this problem, ranked search has been introduced to database systems. We study the problem of On-Line Analytical Processing (OLAP) of ranked queries, where ranked queries are conducted in the arbitrary subset of data defined by multi-dimensional selections. While pre-computation and multi-dimensional aggregation is the standard solution for OLAP, materializing dynamic ranking results is unrealistic because the ranking criteria are not known until the query time. To overcome such difficulty, we develop a new ranking cube method that performs semi on-line materialization and semi online computation in this thesis. Its complete life cycle, including cube construction, incremental maintenance, and query processing, is also discussed. We further extend the ranking cube in three dimensions. First, how to answer queries in high-dimensional data. Second, how to answer queries which involves joins over multiple relations. Third, how to answer general preference queries (besides ranked queries, such as skyline queries). Our performance studies show that ranking-cube is orders of magnitude faster than previous approaches

A time efficient and accurate retrieval of range aggregate queries using fuzzy clustering means (FCM) approach
Massive growth in the big data makes difficult to analyse and retrieve the useful information from the set of available data’s. Statistical analysis: Existing approaches cannot guarantee an efficient retrieval of data from the database. In the existing work stratified sampling is used to partition the tables in terms of static variables. However k means clustering algorithm cannot guarantees an efficient retrieval where the choosing centroid in the large volume of data would be difficult. And less knowledge about the static variable might leads to the less efficient partitioning of tables. Findings: This problem is overcome in the proposed methodology by introducing the FCM clustering instead of k means clustering which can cluster the large volume of data which are similar in nature. Stratification problem is overcome by introducing the post stratification approach which will leads to efficient selection of static variable. Improvements: This methodology leads to an efficient retrieval process in terms of user query within less time and more accuracy
Scalable Model-Based Management of Correlated Dimensional Time Series in ModelarDB+
To monitor critical infrastructure, high quality sensors sampled at a high
frequency are increasingly used. However, as they produce huge amounts of data,
only simple aggregates are stored. This removes outliers and fluctuations that
could indicate problems. As a remedy, we present a model-based approach for
managing time series with dimensions that exploits correlation in and among
time series. Specifically, we propose compressing groups of correlated time
series using an extensible set of model types within a user-defined error bound
(possibly zero). We name this new category of model-based compression methods
for time series Multi-Model Group Compression (MMGC). We present the first MMGC
method GOLEMM and extend model types to compress time series groups. We propose
primitives for users to effectively define groups for differently sized data
sets, and based on these, an automated grouping method using only the time
series dimensions. We propose algorithms for executing simple and
multi-dimensional aggregate queries on models. Last, we implement our methods
in the Time Series Management System (TSMS) ModelarDB (ModelarDB+). Our
evaluation shows that compared to widely used formats, ModelarDB+ provides up
to 13.7 times faster ingestion due to high compression, 113 times better
compression due to the adaptivity of GOLEMM, 630 times faster aggregates by
using models, and close to linear scalability. It is also extensible and
supports online query processing.Comment: 12 Pages, 28 Figures, and 1 Tabl
Pruning Attributes From Data Cubes with Diamond Dicing
Data stored in a data warehouse are inherently multidimensional, but most data-pruning techniques (such as iceberg and top-k queries) are unidimensional. However, analysts need to issue multidimensional queries. For example, an analyst may need to select not just the most profitable stores or--separately--the most profitable products, but simultaneous sets of stores and products fulfilling some profitability constraints. To fill this need, we propose a new operator, the diamond dice. Because of the interaction between dimensions, the computation of diamonds is challenging. We present the first diamond-dicing experiments on large data sets. Experiments show that we can compute diamond cubes over fact tables containing 100 million facts in less than 35 minutes using a standard PC
A Survey on Array Storage, Query Languages, and Systems
Since scientific investigation is one of the most important providers of
massive amounts of ordered data, there is a renewed interest in array data
processing in the context of Big Data. To the best of our knowledge, a unified
resource that summarizes and analyzes array processing research over its long
existence is currently missing. In this survey, we provide a guide for past,
present, and future research in array processing. The survey is organized along
three main topics. Array storage discusses all the aspects related to array
partitioning into chunks. The identification of a reduced set of array
operators to form the foundation for an array query language is analyzed across
multiple such proposals. Lastly, we survey real systems for array processing.
The result is a thorough survey on array data storage and processing that
should be consulted by anyone interested in this research topic, independent of
experience level. The survey is not complete though. We greatly appreciate
pointers towards any work we might have forgotten to mention.Comment: 44 page
Enabling Ubiquitous OLAP Analyses
An OLAP analysis session is carried out as a sequence of OLAP operations applied to multidimensional cubes. At each step of a session, an operation is applied to the result of the previous step in an incremental fashion. Due to its simplicity and flexibility, OLAP is the most adopted paradigm used to explore the data stored in data warehouses. With the goal of expanding the fruition of OLAP analyses, in this thesis we touch several critical topics. We first present our contributions to deal with data extractions from service-oriented sources, which are nowadays used to provide access to many databases and analytic platforms. By addressing data extraction from these sources we make a step towards the integration of external databases into the data warehouse, thus providing richer data that can be analyzed through OLAP sessions. The second topic that we study is that of visualization of multidimensional data, which we exploit to enable OLAP on devices with limited screen and bandwidth capabilities (i.e., mobile devices). Finally, we propose solutions to obtain multidimensional schemata from unconventional sources (e.g., sensor networks), which are crucial to perform multidimensional analyses
