    Orchestrating Service Migration for Low Power MEC-Enabled IoT Devices

    Multi-Access Edge Computing (MEC) is a key enabling technology for Fifth Generation (5G) mobile networks. MEC facilitates distributed cloud computing capabilities and information technology service environment for applications and services at the edges of mobile networks. This architectural modification serves to reduce congestion, latency, and improve the performance of such edge colocated applications and devices. In this paper, we demonstrate how reactive service migration can be orchestrated for low-power MEC-enabled Internet of Things (IoT) devices. Here, we use open-source Kubernetes as container orchestration system. Our demo is based on traditional client-server system from user equipment (UE) over Long Term Evolution (LTE) to the MEC server. As the use case scenario, we post-process live video received over web real-time communication (WebRTC). Next, we integrate orchestration by Kubernetes with S1 handovers, demonstrating MEC-based software defined network (SDN). Now, edge applications may reactively follow the UE within the radio access network (RAN), expediting low-latency. The collected data is used to analyze the benefits of the low-power MEC-enabled IoT device scheme, in which end-to-end (E2E) latency and power requirements of the UE are improved. We further discuss the challenges of implementing such schemes and future research directions therein

    Large-Scale Measurement of Real-Time Communication on the Web

    Web Real-Time Communication (WebRTC) is getting wide adoptions across the browsers (Chrome, Firefox, Opera, etc.) and platforms (PC, Android, iOS). It enables application developers to add real-time communications features (text chat, audio/video calls) to web applications using W3C standard JavaScript APIs, and the end users can enjoy real-time multimedia communication experience from the browser without the complication of installing special applications or browser plug-ins. As WebRTC based applications are getting deployed on the Internet by thousands of companies across the globe, it is very important to understand the quality of the real-time communication services provided by these applications. Important performance metrics to be considered include: whether the communication session was properly setup, what are the network delays, packet loss rate, throughput, etc. At Callstats.io, we provide a solution to address the above concerns. By integrating an JavaScript API into WebRTC applications, Callstats.io helps application providers to measure the Quality of Experience (QoE) related metrics on the end user side. This thesis illustrates how this WebRTC performance measurement system is designed and built and we show some statistics derived from the collected data to give some insight into the performance of today’s WebRTC based real-time communication services. According to our measurement, real-time communication over the Internet are generally performing well in terms of latency and loss. The throughput are good for about 30% of the communication sessions

    Design, Implementation, and Performance Analysis of In-Home Video based Monitoring System for Patients with Dementia

    Dementia is a major public health problem affecting 35 million people in USA. The caregivers of dementia patients experience many types of physical and psychological stress while dealing with disruptive behaviors of dementia patients. This will also result in frequent hospitalizations and re-admissions. In this project we design, implement, and measure the performance of an advanced video based monitoring system to aide the caregivers in managing the behavioral symptoms of dementia patients. The caregivers will be able to easily capture and share the antecedents, consequences, and the function of behavior, through a video clip, and get the real-time feedback from clinical experts. Overall the system will help in reducing the hospital admission/readmission, improve the quality of life for caregivers, and in general result in reduced cost of health care systems. System is developed using python scripts, open source web frameworks, FFmpeg tool chain, and commercial off-the-shelf IP camera and mini-PC. WebRTC is used for video based coaching of caregivers. A framework has been developed to evaluate the storage and retrieval latency of video clips to public and On-premise clouds, video streaming performance in LAN and WLAN environments, and WebRTC performance in different types of access networks. InstaGENIrack, a GENI rack in KU is used as on-premise cloud infrastructure for the evaluation. OpenSSL utilities are employed for secured transport and storage of captured video clips. We conducted the trials in Google fiber ISP in Kansas city, and compared the performance with other traditional ISPs

    TORKAMELEON. IMPROVING TOR’S CENSORSHIP RESISTANCE WITH K-ANONYMIZATION MEDIA MORPHING COVERT INPUT CHANNELS

    Anonymity networks such as Tor and other related tools are powerful means of increas- ing the anonymity and privacy of Internet users’ communications. Tor is currently the most widely used solution by whistleblowers to disclose confidential information and denounce censorship measures, including violations of civil rights, freedom of expres- sion, or guarantees of free access to information. However, recent research studies have shown that Tor is vulnerable to so-called powerful correlation attacks carried out by global adversaries or collaborative Internet censorship parties. In the Tor ”arms race” scenario, we can see that as new censorship, surveillance, and deep correlation tools have been researched, new, improved solutions for preserving anonymity have also emerged. In recent research proposals, unobservable encapsulation of IP packets in covert media channels is one of the most promising defenses against such threat models. They leverage WebRTC-based covert channels as a robust and practical approach against powerful traf- fic correlation analysis. At the same time, these solutions are difficult to combat through the traffic-blocking measures commonly used by censorship authorities. In this dissertation, we propose TorKameleon, a censorship evasion solution de- signed to protect Tor users with increased censorship resistance against powerful traffic correlation attacks executed by global adversaries. The system is based on flexible K- anonymization input circuits that can support TLS tunneling and WebRTC-based covert channels before forwarding users’ original input traffic to the Tor network. Our goal is to protect users from machine and deep learning correlation attacks between incom- ing user traffic and observed traffic at different Tor network relays, such as middle and egress relays. TorKameleon is the first system to implement a Tor pluggable transport based on parameterizable TLS tunneling and WebRTC-based covert channels. We have implemented the TorKameleon prototype and performed extensive validations to ob- serve the correctness and experimental performance of the proposed solution in the Tor environment. With these evaluations, we analyze the necessary tradeoffs between the performance of the standard Tor network and the achieved effectiveness and performance of TorKameleon, capable of preserving the required unobservability properties.Redes de anonimização como o Tor e soluções ou ferramentas semelhantes são meios poderosos de aumentar a anonimidade e a privacidade das comunicações de utilizadores da Internet . O Tor é atualmente a rede de anonimato mais utilizada por delatores para divulgar informações confidenciais e denunciar medidas de censura tais como violações de direitos civis e da liberdade de expressão, ou falhas nas garantias de livre acesso à informação. No entanto, estudos recentes mostram que o Tor é vulnerável a adversários globais ou a entidades que colaboram entre si para garantir a censura online. Neste cenário competitivo e de jogo do “gato e do rato”, é possível verificar que à medida que novas soluções de censura e vigilância são investigadas, novos sistemas melhorados para a preservação de anonimato são também apresentados e refinados. O encapsulamento de pacotes IP em túneis encapsulados em protocolos de media são uma das mais promissoras soluções contra os novos modelos de ataque à anonimidade. Estas soluções alavancam canais encobertos em protocolos de media baseados em WebRTC para resistir a poderosos ataques de correlação de tráfego e a medidas de bloqueios normalmente usadas pelos censores. Nesta dissertação propomos o TorKameleon, uma solução desenhada para protoger os utilizadores da rede Tor contra os mais recentes ataques de correlação feitos por um modelo de adversário global. O sistema é baseado em estratégias de anonimização e reencaminhamento do tráfego do utilizador através de K nós, utilizando também encap- sulamento do tráfego em canais encobertos em túneis TLS ou WebRTC. O nosso objetivo é proteger os utilizadores da rede Tor de ataques de correlação implementados através de modelos de aprendizagem automática feitos entre o tráfego do utilizador que entra na rede Tor e esse mesmo tráfego noutro segmento da rede, como por exemplo nos nós de saída da rede. O TorKameleon é o primeiro sistema a implementar um Tor pluggable transport parametrizável, baseado em túneis TLS ou em canais encobertos em protocolos media. Implementamos um protótipo do sistema e realizamos uma extensa avalição expe- rimental, inserindo a solução no ambiente da rede Tor. Com base nestas avaliações, anali- zamos o tradeoff necessário entre a performance da rede Tor e a eficácia e a performance obtida do TorKameleon, que garante as propriedades de preservação de anonimato

    Desktop Sharing Portal

    Desktop sharing technologies have existed since the late 80s. It is often used in scenarios where collaborative computing is beneficial to participants in the shared environment by the control of the more knowledgeable party. But the steps required in establishing a session is often cumbersome to many. Selection of a sharing method, obtaining sharing target’s network address, sharing tool’s desired ports, and firewall issues are major hurdles for a typical non-IT user. In this project, I have constructed a web-portal that helps collaborators to easily locate each other and initialize sharing sessions. The portal that I developed enables collaborated sessions to start as easily as browsing to a URL of the sharing service provider, with no need to download or follow installation instructions on either party’s end. In addition, I have added video conferencing and audio streaming capability to bring better collaborative and multimedia experience

    Managing Network Delay for Browser Multiplayer Games

    Latency is one of the key performance elements affecting the quality of experience (QoE) in computer games. Latency in the context of games can be defined as the time between the user input and the result on the screen. In order for the QoE to be satisfactory the game needs to be able to react fast enough to player input. In networked multiplayer games, latency is composed of network delay and local delays. Some major sources of network delay are queuing delay and head-of-line (HOL) blocking delay. Network delay in the Internet can be even in the order of seconds. In this thesis we discuss what feasible networking solutions exist for browser multiplayer games. We conduct a literature study to analyze the Differentiated Services architecture, some salient Active Queue Management (AQM) algorithms (RED, PIE, CoDel and FQ-CoDel), the Explicit Congestion Notification (ECN) concept and network protocols for web browser (WebSocket, QUIC and WebRTC). RED, PIE and CoDel as single-queue implementations would be sub-optimal for providing low latency to game traffic. FQ-CoDel is a multi-queue AQM and provides flow separation that is able to prevent queue-building bulk transfers from notably hampering latency-sensitive flows. WebRTC Data-Channel seems promising for games since it can be used for sending arbitrary application data and it can avoid HOL blocking. None of the network protocols, however, provide completely satisfactory support for the transport needs of multiplayer games: WebRTC is not designed for client-server connections, QUIC is not designed for traffic patterns typical for multiplayer games and WebSocket would require parallel connections to mitigate the effects of HOL blocking
