OFDM Synthetic Aperture Radar Imaging with Sufficient Cyclic Prefix
The existing linear frequency modulated (LFM) (or step frequency) and random
noise synthetic aperture radar (SAR) systems may correspond to the frequency
hopping (FH) and direct sequence (DS) spread spectrum systems in the past
second and third generation wireless communications. Similar to the current and
future wireless communications generations, in this paper, we propose OFDM SAR
imaging, where a sufficient cyclic prefix (CP) is added to each OFDM pulse. The
sufficient CP insertion converts an inter-symbol interference (ISI) channel
from multipaths into multiple ISI-free subchannels as the key in a wireless
communications system, and analogously, it provides an inter-range-cell
interference (IRCI) free (high range resolution) SAR image in a SAR system. The
sufficient CP insertion along with our newly proposed SAR imaging algorithm
particularly for the OFDM signals also differentiates this paper from all the
existing studies in the literature on OFDM radar signal processing. Simulation
results are presented to illustrate the high range resolution performance of
our proposed CP based OFDM SAR imaging algorithm.Comment: This version has been accepted by IEEE Transactions on Geoscience and

Future transmitter/receiver diversity schemes in broadcast wireless networks
An open diversity architecture for a cooperating broadcast wireless network is presented that exploits the strengths of the existing digital broadcast standards. Different diversity techniques for broadcast networks that will minimize the complexity of broadcast systems and improve received SNR of broadcast signals are described. Resulting digital broadcast networks could require fewer transmitter sites and thus be more cost-effective with less environmental impact. Transmit diversity is particularly investigated since it obviates the major disadvantage of receive diversity being the difficulty of locating two receive antennas far enough apart in a small mobile device. The schemes examined here are compatible with existing broadcast and cellular telecom standards and can be incorporated into existing systems without change
Subband filtered multi-carrier systems for multi-service wireless communications
Flexibly supporting multiple services, each with different communication requirements and frame structure, has been identified as one of the most significant and promising characteristics of next generation and beyond wireless communication systems. However, integrating multiple frame structures with different subcarrier spacing in one radio carrier may result in significant inter-service-band-interference (ISBI). In this paper, a framework for multi-service (MS) systems is established based on a subband filtered multi-carrier system. The subband filtering implementations and both asynchronous and generalized synchronous (GS) MS subband filtered multi-carrier (SFMC) systems have been proposed. Based on the GS-MS-SFMC system, the system model with ISBI is derived and a number of properties on ISBI are given. In addition, low-complexity ISBI cancelation algorithms are proposed by precoding the information symbols at the transmitter. For asynchronous MS-SFMC system in the presence of transceiver imperfections, including carrier frequency offset, timing offset, and phase noise, a complete analytical system model is established in terms of desired signal, inter-symbol-interference, inter-carrier-interference, ISBI, and noise. Thereafter, new channel equalization algorithms are proposed by considering the errors and imperfections. Numerical analysis shows that the analytical results match the simulation results, and the proposed ISBI cancelation and equalization algorithms can significantly improve the system performance in comparison with the existing algorithms
Performance degradation due to multipath noise for narrowband OFDM systems: channel-based analysis and experimental determination
The performance of OFDM systems over a multipath channel can strongly degrade due to the propagation delay spread. The distortion of the received signal over the fast Fourier transform window is referred to as multipath noise. This work aims to analytically determine the performance loss due to multipath noise as a function of OFDM and channel parameters for narrowband OFDM systems. First, it is investigated whether it is possible to describe the multipath noise, varying over different OFDM packets due to the temporal variation of the channel, by an effective noise factor F-delay, from which the loss factor is directly determined. Second, the theory of room electromagnetics is applied to develop a closed-form expression for F-delay as a function of the OFDM and reverberation parameters. This analytical method is validated with excellent agreement. Finally, the loss factor is determined for IEEE 802.11 based on channel measurements in two large conference rooms, providing values up to 19 dB for an 800 ns cyclic prefix length
Laboratory measurement campaign of DVB-T signal with transmit delay diversity
The requirements for future DVB-T/H networks demand that broadcasters design and deploy networks that provide ubiquitous reception in challenging indoors and other obstructed situations. It is essential that such networks are designed cost-effectively and with minimized environmental impact. The EC funded project PLUTO has since its start in 2006 explored the use of diversity to improve coverage in these difficult situations. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the performance of Transmit Delay Diversity (DD) with two antennas to improve the reception of DVB-T/H systems operating in different realistic propagation conditions through a series of tests using a SPIRENT SR5500 dual channel emulator. The relationship between correlation coefficient between channels, receiver velocity and diversity gain is nvestigated. It is shown that transmit delay diversity significantly improves the quality of reception particularly in simulated fast fading mobile broadcasting applications. Intersymbol and Intercarrier Interference in OFDM Transmissions through Highly Dispersive Channels
This work quantifies, for the first time, intersymbol and intercarrier
interferences induced by very dispersive channels in OFDM systems. The
resulting achievable data rate for \wam{suboptimal} OFDM transmissions is
derived based on the computation of signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio for
arbitrary length finite duration channel impulse responses. Simulation results
point to significant differences between data rates obtained via conventional
formulations, for which interferences are supposed to be limited to two or
three blocks, versus the data rates considering the actual channel dispersion
Cyclic prefix-based universal filtered multicarrier system and performance analysis
Recently proposed universal filtered multicarrier (UFMC) system is not an orthogonal system in multipath channel environments and might cause significant performance loss. In this paper, the authors propose a cyclic prefix (CP) based UFMC system and first analyze the conditions for interference-free one-tap equalization in the absence of transceiver imperfections. Then the corresponding signal model and output signal-to-noise ratio expression are derived. In the presence of carrier frequency offset, timing offset, and insufficient CP length, the authors establish an analytical system model as a summation of desired signal, intersymbol interference, intercarrier interference, and noise. New channel equalization algorithms are proposed based on the derived analytical signal model. Numerical results show that the derived model matches the simulation results precisely, and the proposed equalization algorithms improve the UFMC system performance in terms of bit error rate
Analysis of cyclic delay diversity on DVB-H systems over spatially correlated channel
The objective of this work is to research and analyze the performance of Cyclic Delay Diversity (CDD) with two transmit antenna on DVB-H systems operating in spatially correlated channel. It is shown in this paper that CDD can achieve desirable transmit diversity gain over uncorrelated channel with or without receiver diversity. However, in reality, the respective signal paths between spatially separated antennas and the mobile receiver is likely to be correlated because of insufficient antenna separation at the transmitter and the lack of scattering effect of the channel. Under this spatially correlated channel, it is apparent that CDD cannot achieve the same diversity gain as obtained under the uncorrelated channel. In this paper, a new upper bound on the pairwise error probability (PEP) of the CDD with spatial correlation of two transmit antennas is derived. The upper bound is used to study the CDD theoretical error performance and diversity gain losses over a generalized spatially correlated Rayleigh channel. This theoretical analysis is validated by the simulation of DVB-H systems with two transmit antennas and the CDD scheme. Both the theoretical and simulated results give the valuable insight that the CDD ability to perform well with a certain amount of channel correlation
