5G-MEC Testbeds for V2X Applications
Fifth-generation (5G) mobile networks fulfill the demands of critical applications, such as Ultra-Reliable Low-Latency Communication (URLLC), particularly in the automotive industry. Vehicular communication requires low latency and high computational capabilities at the network’s edge. To meet these requirements, ETSI standardized Multi-access Edge Computing (MEC), which provides cloud computing capabilities and addresses the need for low latency. This paper presents a generalized overview for implementing a 5G-MEC testbed for Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) applications, as well as the analysis of some important testbeds and state-of-the-art implementations based on their deployment scenario, 5G use cases, and open source accessibility. The complexity of using the testbeds is also discussed, and the challenges researchers may face while replicating and deploying them are highlighted. Exploring the provision of reliable network storage in highly mobile environments
Computing is fundamentally about processing data which must be readily accessible to processing elements. Hence, the use of storage hierarchies plays an important role in the overall performance of computer systems. Recently, due to the deployment of fast networks, network storage has emerged as a viable alternative to large local storage systems. However, trying to provide reliable network storage in highly mobile environments, such as vehicular networks, results in the need to address several issues. This paper explores these challenges by first looking at the communication dynamics required for seamless connectivity in these networks. It then looks at how services can be migrated as users move around. The results of this analysis are applied to the migration of a simple Network Memory Server using different migration techniques such as Docker, KVM, LXD and Unikernels in an edge environment, represented by a real Vehicle Ad-Hoc Network. The results show that a proactive approach to service migration is needed to support such services in highly mobile environments
Smart handoff technique for internet of vehicles communication using dynamic edge-backup node

Nowadays, IoV has turned into an interesting field of research as vehicles can be equipped with processors, sensors, and communication devices. IoV gives rise to handoff, which involves changing the connection points during the online communication session. This presents a major challenge for which many standardized solutions are recommended. Although there are various proposed techniques and methods to support seamless handover procedure in IoV, there are still some open research issues, such as unavoidable packet loss rate and latency. On the other hand, the emerged concept of edge mobile computing has gained crucial attention by researchers that could help in reducing computational complexities and decreasing communication delay. Hence, this paper specifically studies the handoff challenges in cluster based handoff using new concept of dynamic edge-backup node. The outcomes are evaluated and contrasted with the network mobility method, our proposed technique, and other cluster-based technologies. The results show that coherence in communication during the handoff method can be upgraded, enhanced, and improved utilizing the proposed technique.Published onlin
Hybrid-Vehfog: A Robust Approach for Reliable Dissemination of Critical Messages in Connected Vehicles
Vehicular Ad-hoc Networks (VANET) enable efficient communication between
vehicles with the aim of improving road safety. However, the growing number of
vehicles in dense regions and obstacle shadowing regions like Manhattan and
other downtown areas leads to frequent disconnection problems resulting in
disrupted radio wave propagation between vehicles. To address this issue and to
transmit critical messages between vehicles and drones deployed from service
vehicles to overcome road incidents and obstacles, we proposed a hybrid
technique based on fog computing called Hybrid-Vehfog to disseminate messages
in obstacle shadowing regions, and multi-hop technique to disseminate messages
in non-obstacle shadowing regions. Our proposed algorithm dynamically adapts to
changes in an environment and benefits in efficiency with robust drone
deployment capability as needed. Performance of Hybrid-Vehfog is carried out in
Network Simulator (NS-2) and Simulation of Urban Mobility (SUMO) simulators.
The results showed that Hybrid-Vehfog outperformed Cloud-assisted Message
Downlink Dissemination Scheme (CMDS), Cross-Layer Broadcast Protocol (CLBP),
PEer-to-Peer protocol for Allocated REsource (PrEPARE), Fog-Named Data
Networking (NDN) with mobility, and flooding schemes at all vehicle densities
and simulation times
