    The Effects of Task, Task Mapping, and Layout Space on User Performance in Information-Rich Virtual Environments

    How should abstract information be displayed in Information-Rich Virtual Environments (IRVEs)? There are a variety of techniques available, and it is important to determine which techniques help foster a user’s understanding both within and between abstract and spatial information types. Our evaluation compared two such techniques: Object Space and Display Space. Users strongly prefer Display Space over Object Space, and those who use Display Space may perform better. Display Space was faster and more accurate than Object Space for tasks comparing abstract information. Object Space was more accurate for comparisons of spatial information. These results suggest that for abstract criteria, visibility is a more important requirement than perceptual coupling by depth and association cues. They also support the value of perceptual coupling for tasks with spatial criteria

    A dynamic three-dimensional network visualization program for integration into cyberciege and other network visualization scenarios

    Detailed information and intellectual understanding of a network's topology and vulnerabilities is invaluable to better securing computer networks. Network protocol analyzers and intrusion detection systems can provide this additional information. In particular, game-based trainers, such as CyberCIEGE, have been shown to improve the level of training and understanding of network security professionals. This thesis' objective is to enhance these applications by developing NTAV3D, or, Network Topology and Attack Visualizer (Three Dimensional). NTAV3D is a tool that displays network topology, vulnerabilities, and attacks in an interactive, three dimensional environment. This augments the design and gameplay of CyberCIEGE by increasing gameplayer interaction and data display. Additionally, NTAV3D can be expanded to provide this capability to network analysis and intrusion detection tools. Furthermore, NTAV3D expands on ideas and results from related work of the best ways to visualize network topology, vulnerabilities, and attacks. NTAV3D was created using open-source software technologies including Xj3D, X3D, Java, and XML. It is also one of the first applications to be built with only the Xj3D toolkit.     A Software Framework to Create 3D Browser-Based Speech Enabled Applications

    The advances in automatic speech recognition have pushed the humancomputer interface researchers to adopt speech as one mean of input data. It is natural to humans, and complements very well other input interfaces. However, integrating an automatic speech recognizer into a complex system (such as a 3D visualization system or a Virtual Reality system) can be a difficult and time consuming task. In this paper we present our approach to the problem, a software framework requiringminimum additional coding from the application developer. The framework combines voice commands with existing interaction code, automating the task of creating a new speech grammar (to be used by the recognizer). A new listener component for theXj3D was created, which makes transparent to the user the integration between the 3D browser and the recognizer. We believe this is a desirable feature for virtual reality system developers, and also to be used as a rapid prototyping tool when experimenting with speech technology

    Development of Virtual Environment (VE) applications is challenging where application developers are required to have expertise in the target VE technologies along with the problem domain expertise. New VE technologies impose a significant learning curve to even the most experienced VE developer. The proposed solution relies on synthesis to automate the migration of a VE application to a new unfamiliar VE platform/technology. To solve the problem, the Common Scene Definition Framework (CSDF) is developed, that serves as a superset/model representation of the target virtual world. Input modules are developed to populate the framework with the capabilities of the virtual world imported from VRML 2.0 and X3D formats. The synthesis capability is built into the framework to synthesize the virtual world into a subset of VRML 2.0, VRML 1.0, X3D, Java3D, JavaFX, JavaME, and OpenGL technologies, which may reside on different platforms. Interfaces are designed to keep the framework extensible to different and new VE formats/technologies. The framework demonstrated the ability to quickly synthesize a working prototype of the input virtual environment in different VE formats

    Currently, companies face the unprecedented challenges of the global marketplace, collaborative environments and the entire product lifecycle. There are new requirements for product representations, including: platform/application independence, support for the product lifecycle, rapidly sharing information between geographically distributed applications and users, and protection of commercial security. To meet these, some lightweight representations have been developed and applied in different industries. This paper highlights some limitations in the current applications, and presents a framework of lightweight representations for the product lifecycle. In the proposed framework, a markup method is applied to the whole product lifecycle. The approach is demonstrated with an industrial case study

    Data analysis and navigation in high-dimensional chemical and biological spaces

    The goal of this master thesis is to develop and validate a visual data-mining approach suitable for the screening of chemicals in the context of REACH [Registration, Evaluation, Authorization and Restriction of Chemicals]. The proposed approach will facilitate the development and validation of non-testing methods via the exploration of environmental endpoints and their relationship with the chemical structure and physicochemical properties of chemicals. The use of an interactive chemical space data exploration tool using 3D visualization and navigation will enrich the information available with additional variables like size, texture and color of the objects of the scene (compounds). The features that distinguish this approach and make it unique are (i) the integration of multiple data sources allowing the recovery in real time of complementary information of the studied compounds, (ii) the integration of several algorithms for the data analysis (dimensional reduction, generation of composite variables and clustering) and (iii) direct user interaction with the data through the virtual navigation mechanism. All this is achieved without the need for specialized hardware or the use of specific devices and high-cost virtual reality and mixed reality

    Extending DoD modeling and simulation with Web 2.0, Ajax and X3D

    DoD has much to gain from Web 2.0 and the Ajax paradigm in open source. The Java language has come a long way in providing real world case studies and scalable solutions for the enterprise that are currently in production on sites such as eBay.com (http://www.ebay.com) and MLB.com (http://www.mlb.com). The most popular Ajax application in production is Google Maps (http://maps.google.com), which serves as a good example of the power of the technology. Open Source technology has matured greatly in the past three years and is now mature enough for deployment within DoD systems. In the past, management within the DoD has been reluctant to consider Enterprise Level Open Source Technologies as a solution, fearing that they might receive little to no support. In fact, the Open Source Business Model is entirely based on first developing a broad user base then providing support as a service for their clients. DoD Modeling and Simulation can create dynamic and compelling content that is ready for the challenges of the 21st century and completely integrated with the Global Information Grid (GIG) concept. This paper presents a short history of Model View Controller (MVC) architectures and goes over various pros and cons of each framework (Struts, Spring, Java Server Faces), which is critical for the deployment of a modern Java web application. Ajax and various frameworks are then discussed (Dojo, Google Web Toolkit, ZK, and Echo2).
