The experimental design was conducted to investigate the use of Microsoft Mathematics, free software made by Microsoft Corporation, in teaching and learning Calculus. This paper reports results from experimental study details on implementation of Microsoft Mathematics in Calculus, students\u27 achievement and the effects of the use of Microsoft Mathematics on students\u27 attitudes in relation to such experience. Two classes of the students from the first year student in Universitas Serang Raya were participated in the study. This study found that students who taught by using Microsoft Mathematics had higher achievement and has a positive effect on students\u27 confidence of mathematics

This paper reports results from experimental study details on implementation of Microsoft Mathematics in Calculus, students’ achievement and the effects of the use of Microsoft Mathematics on students’ attitudes in relation to such experience. Two classes of the students from the first year student in Universitas Serang Raya were participated in the study. Control group was taught by using conventional teaching method, whereas experimental group was taught by using Microsoft Mathematics software. Assessment of students’ achievement was collected previous to and after experiment by giving the test. At the end of the lecture, both groups completed the questionnaires indicating their attitudes toward and self-confidence in mathematics and computers. In addition, the experimental group was asked to complete a questionnaire about their attitudes toward using Microsoft Mathematics. Interview process was added to complete the data. This study found that students who taught by using Microsoft Mathematics had higher achievement and has a positive effect on students’ confidence of mathematics. In this project, common practices for visualizing scientific data were studied. In addition, the science of cognition and data display was reviewed. The results of this investigation was applied to augment a Civil Engineering introductory course on Finite Element Method at WPI. Software enhancements allowed three dimensional visualization for simulation of engineering structures. The research on cognition and data graphics was used to improve understanding of these visual aids. The plotting function, developed in MATLAB and Julia environments during the course of this project, can help all students visualize the results of their numerical codes

Advancing Creative Visual Thinking with Constructive Function-based Modelling.

Modern education technologies are destined to reflect the realities of a modern digital age. The juxtaposition of real and synthetic (computer-generated) worlds as well as a greater emphasis on visual dimension are especially important characteristics that have to be taken into account in learning and teaching. We describe the ways in which an approach to constructive shape modelling can be used to advancing creative visual thinking in artistic and technical education. This approach assumes the use of a simple programming language or interactive software tools for creating a shape model, generating its images, and finally fabricating a real object of that model. It can be considered an educational technology suitable not only for children and students but also for researchers, artists, and designers. The corresponding modelling language and software tools are being developed within an international HyperFun Project. These tools are easy to use by students of different age, specialization and abilities, and can easily be extended and adapted for various educational purposes in different areas

The paper contains some general background and someof the visualization methods that have been used to bring computer graphics technology to model mathematical problems of Calculus with Analytical Geometry. Computer-generated images have been length and breath of the paper as a source of additional background information on visual mathematics and an overview of selected animations concerned with mathematical visualization.

Design and Implementation of a Logo-based Computer Graphics Course

    Get PDF
Two years ago the Faculty of Mathematics and Informatics at Sofia University makes a decision to design a new series of Logo-based courses which make use of the modern technology. The pedagogical component of the challenge is to design a multidisciplinary course suitable for students with different skills and interests. From a development perspective the challenge is to build an entirely new one. And finally the course must be attractive regardless of the seriousness and complexity of the topics included in it. The paper discusses the structure of the course including the final weeks when topics emerging from students’ course projects are taught. Each lesson from the course is based on sets of sample programs representing the general lifecycle of software development. This includes designing, coding and debugging. Samples are created on-the-fly, thus different instances of the course results in different final projects. Lessons are interactive and students may interfere with the direction of demonstrated software development. Three lessons from the course are sketched in the paper. The first one is taught in week 4 and spans over Computer Science, Calculus, Analytical Geometry; and Applied Statistics and Probability. The lesson in week 6 is focused on composition of complex movements and their synchronization. It uses elements from Computer Science, Geometry, Physics, and Trigonometrics. The third lesson is about relative transformational geometry and its application in the form of Turtle Graphic
