Incentive Mechanisms in Peer-to-Peer Networks — A Systematic Literature Review
Centralized networks inevitably exhibit single points of failure that malicious actors regularly target. Decentralized networks are more resilient if numerous participants contribute to the network’s functionality. Most decentralized networks employ incentive mechanisms to coordinate the participation and cooperation of peers and thereby ensure the functionality and security of the network. This article systematically reviews incentive mechanisms for decentralized networks and networked systems by covering 165 prior literature reviews and 178 primary research papers published between 1993 and October 2022. Of the considered sources, we analyze 11 literature reviews and 105 primary research papers in detail by categorizing and comparing the distinctive properties of the presented incentive mechanisms. The reviewed incentive mechanisms establish fairness and reward participation and cooperative behavior. We review work that substitutes central authority through independent and subjective mechanisms run in isolation at each participating peer and work that applies multiparty computation. We use monetary, reputation, and service rewards as categories to differentiate the implementations and evaluate each incentive mechanism’s data management, attack resistance, and contribution model. Further, we highlight research gaps and deficiencies in reproducibility and comparability. Finally, we summarize our assessments and provide recommendations to apply incentive mechanisms to decentralized networks that share computational resources
Coordination in Service Value Networks - A Mechanism Design Approach
The fundamental paradigm shift from traditional value chains to agile service value networks (SVN) implies new economic and organizational challenges. This work provides an auction-based coordination mechanism that enables the allocation and pricing of service compositions in SVNs. The mechanism is multidimensional incentive compatible and implements an ex-post service level enforcement. Trustworthy Federated Learning: A Survey
Federated Learning (FL) has emerged as a significant advancement in the field
of Artificial Intelligence (AI), enabling collaborative model training across
distributed devices while maintaining data privacy. As the importance of FL
increases, addressing trustworthiness issues in its various aspects becomes
crucial. In this survey, we provide an extensive overview of the current state
of Trustworthy FL, exploring existing solutions and well-defined pillars
relevant to Trustworthy . Despite the growth in literature on trustworthy
centralized Machine Learning (ML)/Deep Learning (DL), further efforts are
necessary to identify trustworthiness pillars and evaluation metrics specific
to FL models, as well as to develop solutions for computing trustworthiness
levels. We propose a taxonomy that encompasses three main pillars:
Interpretability, Fairness, and Security & Privacy. Each pillar represents a
dimension of trust, further broken down into different notions. Our survey
covers trustworthiness challenges at every level in FL settings. We present a
comprehensive architecture of Trustworthy FL, addressing the fundamental
principles underlying the concept, and offer an in-depth analysis of trust
assessment mechanisms. In conclusion, we identify key research challenges
related to every aspect of Trustworthy FL and suggest future research
directions. This comprehensive survey serves as a valuable resource for
researchers and practitioners working on the development and implementation of
Trustworthy FL systems, contributing to a more secure and reliable AI

Reputation Revision Method for Selecting Cloud Services Based on Prior Knowledge and a Market Mechanism
The trust levels of cloud services should be evaluated to ensure their reliability. The effectiveness of these evaluations has major effects on user satisfaction, which is increasingly important. However, it is difficult to provide objective evaluations in open and dynamic environments because of the possibilities of malicious evaluations, individual preferences, and intentional praise. In this study, we propose a novel unfair rating filtering method for a reputation revision system. This method uses prior knowledge as the basis of similarity when calculating the average rating, which facilitates the recognition and filtering of unfair ratings. In addition, the overall performance is increased by a market mechanism that allows users and service providers to adjust their choice of services and service configuration in a timely manner. The experimental results showed that this method filtered unfair ratings in an effective manner, which greatly improved the precision of the reputation revision system
Combinatorial Auction-based Mechanisms for Composite Web Service Selection
Composite service selection presents the opportunity for the rapid development of complex applications using existing web services. It refers to the problem of selecting a set of web services from a large pool of available candidates to logically compose them to achieve value-added composite services. The aim of service selection is to choose the best set of services based on the functional and non-functional (quality related) requirements of a composite service requester. The current service selection approaches mostly assume that web services are offered as single independent entities; there is no possibility for bundling. Moreover, the current research has mainly focused on solving the problem for a single composite service. There is a limited research to date on how the presence of multiple requests for composite services affects the performance of service selection approaches. Addressing these two aspects can significantly enhance the application of composite service selection approaches in the real-world. We develop new approaches for the composite web service selection problem by addressing both the bundling and multiple requests issues. In particular, we propose two mechanisms based on combinatorial auction models, where the provisioning of multiple services are auctioned simultaneously and service providers can bid to offer combinations of web services. We mapped these mechanisms to Integer Linear Programing models and conducted extensive simulations to evaluate them. The results of our experimentation show that bundling can lead to cost reductions compared to when services are offered independently. Moreover, the simultaneous consideration of a set of requests enhances the success rate of the mechanism in allocating services to requests. By considering all composite service requests at the same time, the mechanism achieves more homogenous prices which can be a determining factor for the service requester in choosing the best composite service selection mechanism to deploy
Promises, Impositions, and other Directionals
Promises, impositions, proposals, predictions, and suggestions are
categorized as voluntary co-operational methods. The class of voluntary
co-operational methods is included in the class of so-called directionals.
Directionals are mechanisms supporting the mutual coordination of autonomous
agents.
Notations are provided capable of expressing residual fragments of
directionals. An extensive example, involving promises about the suitability of
programs for tasks imposed on the promisee is presented. The example
illustrates the dynamics of promises and more specifically the corresponding
mechanism of trust updating and credibility updating. Trust levels and
credibility levels then determine the way certain promises and impositions are
handled.
The ubiquity of promises and impositions is further demonstrated with two
extensive examples involving human behaviour: an artificial example about an
agent planning a purchase, and a realistic example describing technology
mediated interaction concerning the solution of pay station failure related
problems arising for an agent intending to leave the parking area.Comment: 55 page
